Why the Redskins Should Consider Stockpiling Picks

Washington Commanders Washington Redskins Draft

Offensive PlayersDefensive Players

The Redskins have seven picks in April’s Draft, but they should highly consider trading back (maybe even multiple times) to stockpile picks in one of the deepest drafts in recent memory. The following lists are guys the Redskins could consider who reasonably could be on the board from the 3rd round on. These are guys who I would feel comfortable drafting for the Redskins in the appropriate round range. Obviously the list would thin out as the draft wore on, but remember this isn’t an all inclusive list so there would be other names who will be drafted pushing down some of these players. Also while it is likely that a few of these guys will go before the 3rd round, it will push down an even higher rated prospect.

Quarterbacks: (3 guys):

-Quarterback is not a major need position, but the Redskins could consider a guy in the 6th or 7th round if they start getting some extra selections. This would be a guy that they would ideally stash on the practice squad this year with the hope that next year he could be the 3rd quarterback.

Matt Scott, Arizona

Sean Renfree, Duke

Jordan Rogers, Vanderbilt

Running backs: (11 guys):

-It’s all but guaranteed that the Redskins will draft a running back at some point in this draft. Though given their other needs and Mike Shanahan’s track record the pick won’t come before the 4th round, so this list is just 4th round or later backs. Though speed may be the more likely back, don’t be surprised if Shanahan falls in love with a bigger back as well.

Stephan Taylor, Stanford

Le’Von Bell, Michigan State

Christine Michael, Texas A&M

Knile Davis, Arkansas

Kenjon Barner, Oregon

Ray Graham, Pitt

Zac Stacy, Vanderbilt

Theo Riddick, Notre Dame

Rex Burkhead, Nebraska

Kerwynn Williams, Utah State

Stefphon Jefferson, Nevada

Fullback: (3 guys):

-Fullback isn’t a priority, but the Redskins could get creative with some extra picks. All three guys listed have versatility (Line and Pryor as short yardage backs, Juszcyk as a tight end), who could be intriguing guys to incorporate into the Redskins system. Also Young is a restricted FA this year so going forward this could quickly become a much bigger need if he isn’t re-signed long term.

Zach Line, SMU

Lonnie Pryor, FSU

Kyle Juszcyk, Harvard

Tight End: (9 guys):

-With only one tight end under contract, and the fact that he’s more of a special teamer than anything else, this could be a priority position. Logan Paulsen is a restricted free agent so he’s likely back, but he may not be a guy who the Redskins look to long term. At some point this position should be addressed.

Vance McDonald, Rice

Gavin Escobar, San Diego State

Travis Kelce, Cincinnati

Nick Kasa, Colorado

Jordan Reed, Florida

Michael Williams, Alabama

Chris Gragg, Arkansas

Jake Stoneburner, Ohio State

Mychal Rivera, Tennessee

Offensive Tackle: (12 guys):

-This is one of the Redskins bigger needs as currently only Trent Williams, Tom Compton and Maurice Hurt are tackles that are on the roster. Outside of Williams, they have collectively one game at tackle in the NFL. Note some of these guys could be looked at as guards as well.

Justin Pugh, Syracuse

Kyle Long, Oregon

David Bakhtiari, Colorado

Terron Armstead, Arkansas Pine-Bluff

David Quessenberry, San Jose State

Jordan Mills, Louisiana Tech

Chris Faulk, LSU

Brennan Williams, UNC

Xavier Nixon, Florida

Oday Aboushi, UVA

Reid Fragel, Ohio State

Tanner Hawkinson, Kansas

Offensive Guard: (9 guys):

-The Redskins drafted two guards last year, but there are a lot of question marks about what they can bring to the table. With the LG starting job wide open this year the Redskins could decide chose a higher upside player, or at least bring in some additional depth.

Larry Warford, Kentucky

Alvin Bailey, Arkansas

Brian Winters, Kent State

J.C. Tretter, Cornell

Garrett Gilkey, Chadron State

Hugh Thornton, Illinois

Eric Herman, Ohio

Earl Watford, JMU

Jeff Baca, UCLA

Center: (4 guys):

-Center isn’t a pressing need, but many of these guys could get a look at guard as well. Also there is very little experience at center to back-up Will Montgomery if Kory Lichtensteiger is to move on.

Barrett Jones, Alabama

Brian Schwenke, Cal

Khaled Holmes, USC

Braxston Cave, Notre Dame

Wide Receiver: (22 guys):

-This isn’t a pressing need in 2013 given how deep the Skins are, and how little they threw the ball last year. In 2014 though they are pretty thin at the position, and could look to add to the depth of the position to get ready for 2014. It’s not likely a 3rd or 4th round priority, but if some extra picks come into play that could change.

Aaron Dobson, Marshall

Da’Rick Rogers, Tennessee Tech

Ryan Swope, Texas A&M

Marquise Goodwin, Texas

Aaron Mellette, Elon

Stedman Bailey, WVU

Conner Vernon, Duke

Cobi Hamilton, Arkansas

Chris Harper, Kansas State

Kenny Stills, Oklahoma

Tavarres King, Georgia

Corey Fuller, Virginia Tech

Jasper Collins, Mount Union

Ace Sanders, South Carolina

Josh Boyce, TCU

Rodney Smith, FSU

Denard Robinson, Michigan

Alec Lemon, Syracuse

Brandon Kaufman, Eastern Washington

Marcus Davis, Virginia Tech

Emory Blake, Auburn

Ryan Spadola, Leigh
