The Denver Broncos O/U Win Total

Steve O Speak

The Denver Broncos enter the 2022 NFL regular season with an o/u win total of 10 wins.  Denver finishing under 10 wins is -110 and Denver finishing over 10 wins is also -110.  There is a lot of hype surrounding the Broncos going into this season and a big part of that is due to the acquisition of quarterback Russell Wilson.  Denver jumped on the opportunity to acquire Wilson after having an up and down season with quarterback Teddy Bridgewater starting 14 games.  Now that they have gotten the franchise quarterback that they were looking for, the front office can focus its attention on other needs.

Along with bringing in Russell Wilson, the franchise also changed head coaches and went with the Packers’ offensive coordinator, Nathaniel Hackett.  Denver then made Green Bay’s tight end coach, Justin Outten, the team’s new offensive coordinator.  These moves should immediately make a difference that will infuse more creativity and playmaking ability into an offense that hasn’t even averaged 21 points per game once in the last six years.  These offensive changes will provide more opportunities for wide receivers Courtland Sutton and Jerry JeudyKJ Hamler is another wide receiver that has shown an ability to make plays in the passing game and should see a lot of snaps.  At tight end the Broncos will look to replace Noah Fant with the combination of Albert Okwuegbunam and rookie Greg Dulcich.  The offense will also need another year of strong play from their running backs to take pressure off the passing game.  Both Javonte Williams and Melvin Gordon had tremendous seasons in 2021.  They had an identical number of carries with 203.  Williams rushed for 903 yards, which was only 15 yards less than Gordon totaled.  Gordon finished with 8 rushing TDs while Williams finished with four.  In the passing game Williams out performed Gordon but neither one of them were major factors in that aspect of the game.  If the offensive line play can have some improvements then this team should be a real force in the AFC, they have a very solid foundation of core players to build on right now.

After moving on from Vic Fangio and his staff in the offseason, Denver made Ejiro Evero their defensive coordinator.  Although the defense wasn’t great in some crucial areas like takeaways and sacks, they have a plethora of talent on that side of the ball and should rebound nicely.  The offense being better will also benefit the defense and set them up to make more plays.  Their secondary is a strength of the defense with safeties Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson leading the way.  The cornerback position is also very good featuring Patrick Surtain II and Ronald Darby.  Having a strong back end will give the defensive line more time to get pressure on the opposing quarterback, which will also be key in forcing turnovers.  Denver brought in outside linebacker Randy Gregory to help with the rush and pair him with Bradley Chubb, who is coming off of a very disappointing season that was hampered by injury.  It will be imperative for Chubb to have a major rebound this year to help the defense improve upon the sack and turnover totals of 2021.

The AFC West might be the most difficult division in all of football.  The Raiders and Chiefs were strong playoff teams last year and will be good again, while the Chargers just barely missed the playoffs and should be better this year than they were in 2021.  Denver has to host the 49ers, Colts, Chiefs, and Cardinals.  They also have to go on the road to play the Titans, Ravens, and Rams.  There will be significant improvement but I am going under 10 wins for the Broncos because their schedule is a gauntlet.
