How to deal with a concussion

A concussion can be a serious thing, so you have to be careful when it comes to the recovery process. There are a few things that you have to respect, and certain rules that you must follow. A concussion is a brain injury after all, even if it one of the most commons types.

Even if you heard the term quite often, remember that you should take it very seriously as they can even lead to irreversible brain damage. In this article you will find a short guide that will show you what you have to do after you get a concussion.

Don’t panic

Obviously, brain injuries are not a good thing, but you should keep calm. Concussions are not that serious in most cases, and people are usually able to recover completely since the brain is able to heal itself. Nevertheless, it will take some time, and things are different for every person.

What is a concussion?

A concussion is usually caused by a direct hit to the head, or even a fall or sudden movement that causes the brain to hit the skull. A concussion can have several effects including disorientation and dizziness or even blackouts. Sometimes those symptoms show 48 hours after a concussion.

Symptoms

There are a few ways to realise whether you have a concussion and there are certain symptoms. For example you might have difficulties with balance and concentration. A feeling of fogginess or double vision is also common.

A person with a concussion might ask the repeat the same question over and over, or they might have short term memory loss. Usually, the persons affected can’t remember what happened after the even that caused their concussion.

How to recover

In most cases the brain is able to recover itself. However, if it is more severe you should go see a doctor. Luckily, medicine has evolved a lot and there is even a new research on concussions, so you should be able to get all the help that you need. Don’t try to take medicine on your own, as you might make the situation worse.

Even if you do not need medication, you must take care of yourself properly after a concussion. Rest is one of the most important things. Your brain needs a break as it is trying to recover, and even thinking can be difficult for it. Therefore, try to avoid any complex tasks and simply stay at home and relax.

It is also important that you eat properly. Your body will need nutrients as it is trying to get better. Remember that you must rest as well, so don’t try to cook for yourself. You should ask a friend or a family member to do it for you.

Here are a couple of things that you should eat if you are recovering from a concussion: vegetables, nuts, lean meats, fish and eggs. You should also make sure that you avoid alcohol as well during the recovery.
