1.  What’s your take on the BCS National Championship game?

Thoughts on National Championship?

ALANZLOT:

This years BCS Nation Championship is bewteen the best two teams in the country, and isn’t that what everyone wants to see? Is Oklahoma state really on the same level as Alabama, and LSU? No, and while I know the tragic circumstances of OK States’ one loss this season, it is not enough to make me believe the SEC doesn’t have the best team, or two best teams in the country again this season.

DOUG RAMEY – FATPICKLED:

I’m more excited to watch Stanford/Oklahoma St or Wisconsin/Oregon than I am watching 2 SEC teams go at it again. I know it’s been said a million times but the fact that there’s still not a playoff system is unbelievable. Every other sport, at every other level (D-I thru D-III) in college sports has a playoff system. It’s so easy to fix, fix it already!!! As far as the game itself, I hope Alabama wins, as does Oklahoma St…only to screw with the voters and make the argument for a playoff system that much stronger. I’d also like to add that I dislike both coaches involved in the BCS Championship game.

JOHN MANUEL:

I am fine with it based on the current system used.  I do believe the 2 best teams are playing in the title game.  The SEC rolled every other conference in matchups versus the other BCS conferences.  Oklahoma State is a victim of the current system and do have an argument.  They had a bad loss at Iowa State but we may have seen a different result if the game was postponed due to the sad loss of their womens basketball coaches in a plane crash.  Best scenario would have been the Plus 1.  LSU v. Stanford in the Sugar Bowl and Alabama v. Oklahoma State in the Fiesta though.  Then the Plus 1.

STEVEOSPEAK:

I get that Alabama and LSU are the top two teams in the country, but come on. We have football conferences for a reason, and the SEC long ago determined that these two teams can’t meet for a conference title, yet they are allowed to meet for a National one?? Should we just let the Red Sox and Yankees play for the World Series if they have the two best records? And how about the Super Bowl? Last year the Patriots and the Falcons were the top seeds in both conferences, yet couldn’t even get to the AFC and NFC championship games. The FBS needs a playoff system pronto.

2. Who should win the Heisman Trophy this weekend?

Will RG3 win the Heisman?

ALANZLOT:

Robert Griffin III of Baylor should win the Heisman trophy hands down on Saturday. Every Heisman winner has a Heisman game, so to speak, and RG3 saved his for last Saturday.  Connecting with Kendall Wright for a 59-yard TD on Baylor’s first series was a thing of beauty, and quite a statement to the voters. Griffin passed for 320 yards and two scores and ran for 32 yards and two more as the Bears earned consecutive wins over the Longhorns for the first time since 1991-92.

Trent Richardson will be a close second as running through SEC defenses each week isn’t easy.

DOUG RAMEY – FATPICKLED:

RG3. He’s #1 in the nation in passer rating and has accounted for over 4,600 yards and 45 TD’s. He plays at BAYLOR! Baylor was a door mat before RG3 got there. He’s surrounded by far less talented players than his peers that are up for this award with him. Apologies to the other players, but RG3 has my vote.

JOHN MANUEL:

This is probably the toughest one to call in years.  I agree with Kirk Herbstreit that Tyrann Mathieu has been the most important player to his team.  He has changed big games with big plays on possibly the best team we have seen in years.  But the marijuana suspension will probably derail him.  RG3 will probably win in the end.  I just not as sold on Luck as everyone.  He had a chance to be a Mathieu vs. Oregon and wasn’t.  Then again, Trent Richardson has been sick all year.  I have no clue who will win or actually who should.

STEVEOSPEAK:

A lot of good candidates, but my vote would be for Baylor’s Robert Griffin III, his season was near perfect and when you factor in his running ability and the fact that he took Baylor to their best season ever then I think it is a fairly easy decision.

3. Did the Marlins overpay for Jose Reyes?

ALANZLOT:

Everybody overpays in baseball, and of course the Marlins overpaid for Reyes, but that was no doubt overshadowed when Pujols was signed by the Anaheim Angels to play until he is 41 (they think), at 25.4 million per season………Ridiculous if you ask me….

DOUG RAMEY – FATPICKLED:

Yes, the Marlins overpaid…but they had to, they’re the Marlins. The Marlins have been irrelevant in free agency since the 90’s and they’re trying to make a splash. Reyes is a big name, albeit a big name who’s not the same player he was 4 seasons ago. Reyes is listed at 28 years old, which is Dominican for 33. This isn’t the same player who stole 60-70 bases a year in the mid 2000’s. My best guess is he’s a .280 hitter who steals 20-30 bases a year for the next 3-4 years at which time the Marlins will still owe him $44-$66 million bucks. I also lost all respect for him when he sat out on the last day of the year to preserve his batting title…not the kind of player I want to pay $100 million.

JOHN MANUEL:

No based on ability and other contracts.  Yes based on injury history.  If he was healthy the past 2 seasons its a great deal but he hasn’t been.  Is Hanley cool moving to 3rd also?  By the time I am done typing they could have Pujols.  But it looks like they are willing to spend unlike the Orioles.

STEVEOSPEAK:

I wouldn’t necessarily call it an overpay, but it could be if Reyes continues to have some injury issues. If he’s healthy he’s the perfect fit at the top of that lineup, and should help Miami score a ton of runs.

4. What is more likely to happen — Colts go winless or Packers go undefeated?

Will the Packers go undefeated?

ALANZLOT:

The Packers go undefeated…… The last two division games of the season are at home for Green Bay, with the struggling Lions and the beat up Bears visiting. Can they finish the job, unlike the 2007 Patriots would probably be a better question. In their other two games they play the lowly AFC West, as the host the Raiders, and travel to Kansas City. Not sure a rusty Kyle Orton, or Caleb Hanie can beat Aaron Rodgers….. I look for the Colts to pull out either the Jacksonville game on New Years Day, or the Tennessee game at home. I know they are going to get a severe beat down by Ravens this Sunday…….Not really caring that Peyton’s not playing, still hate them from sneaking out in the middle of the night.

DOUG RAMEY – FATPICKLED:

I don’t think either team wins or loses until the last week of the season. During week 17 the Colts will have their best chance of the season to win against the Jags. On the flip side, the Packers may start their backups against a Lions team that may be playing for a playoff birth. I’m gonna call a Colt’s win here.

JOHN MANUEL:

The Packers going undefeated.  The Colts are going to steal a victory in one of the final 3 games after the Ravens trounce them Sunday.  If the Packers don’t sit main players late in the season they will not lose.  Although maybe Rodgers is slipping, had a season low 106 QB rating last week.  Sick season.  Maybe the greatest by a QB or even any player of all time.

STEVEOSPEAK:

I’ll say the Colts go winless. The Colts could maybe squeak out a win against the Jags but I wouldn’t count on it. They are just plain awful.

5.  With 4 more weeks to go, who do you predict to win the AFC West…The Tebows (Broncos), Raiders or other team?

Will Tebow lead the Broncos to AFC West title?

ALANZLOT:

Just as Tim Tebow has willed his team to victory in five of his six starts, he will do the same in winning the AFC West….

DOUG RAMEY – FATPICKLED:

After the Broncos win the Super Bowl, Tebow will visit Disney World and be voted both Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year & People’s Sexiest Man Alive. After his Hall of Fame induction, Tebow will become President of the United States of America. On his deathbed, Tim Tebow will retain total consciousness. You can’t stop Tim Tebow, you can only try to contain him.

JOHN MANUEL:

Going with the Baltimore Broncos since they will be on TV every week here the rest of the season.  Get to see Horseface Elway come down to the sidelines each 4th quarter Jerry Jones style.  Raiders are too up and down and the Chargers dug too deep a whole.  Seeya Norv.  Tebow is starting to make plays to his receivers and Von Miller if healthy is silly.

STEVEOSPEAK:

I have to believe the Tebow magic will end at some time, so I’m going to say the Raiders. They are a better all-around team and should take the division.
