Meet the other Lamar Jackson, Nebraska’s under-the-radar CB

NFL Draft News

Sometime in the not-too-distant future, it’s possible that Lamar Jackson will be intercepted by … Lamar Jackson.

The Baltimore Ravens quarterback isn’t the only Lamar Jackson having a stellar year, as Nebraska cornerback Lamar Jackson is coming off his best season.

At 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, Jackson and teammates Carlos Davis and Khalil Davis recently accepted invites to the East-West Shrine Bowl. Khalil and Carlos are twin brothers who play defensive tackle.

Jackson started every game this season, finishing with a career-high 40 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 3 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery. His 15 passes defended and 12 breakups ranked him in the top-15 nationally as Jackson also was named second-team All-Big Ten.

But despite Nebraska’s disappointing records the past two seasons, Jackson was on scouts’ minds. He ranked third in the Big Ten last year in forced incompletion rate at 20.7 percent, Pro Football Focus said via the Lincoln Journal Star.

The issue, of course, is size and speed: Is Jackson simply too big to play cornerback? Is he fast enough?

Jackson has flown a bit under the radar this season as a draft prospect. CBS Sports Josh Edwards has been banging the proverbial drum for Jackson all year and has had him going as high as the first round in some of his mock drafts. USA Today’s Draft Wire lists Jackson as a third-round prospect.

But other prominent draft publications don’t have Jackson listed at all among their cornerback or safety rankings.

Those questions will start to be answered during the Combine, assuming Jackson gets an invite. The Combine is Feb. 23-March 2.
