2013 NFL Draft Grades: Washington Redskins

Washington Redskins Draft Grade –

Round 2, #51 – CB David Amerson, NC State – Grade: D+

-Amerson was a big reach for the Redskins as their top pick. He was more of a late 3rd rounder to early 4th round pick. And even in that range he was a poor fit for the Redskins given how poor his play was this past season. He’s a risky pick and will likely take some development time before he can be productive at the next level.

Round 3, #85 – TE Jordan Reed, Florida – Grade: B-

-Reed is a slight reach and there are concerns about how he will be utilized, but he represents and intriguing weapon for the Redskins. He is limited as a ‘joker’ tight end and there are questions about his work ethic, but the upside potential is high.

Round 4, #119 – S Phillip Thomas, Fresno St. – Grade: B

-Thomas had a strong year this past season and really jumped up draft boards. He’s still a bit raw overall and struggled at the Senior Bowl, but he’s got good future potential and could even start for the Redskins this season.

Round 5, #154 – RB Chris Thompson, Florida State – Grade: C

-Thompson is an intriguing speed back who could be a returner/weapon for the Redskins, but this was way too high for him. He’s coming off back-to-back injury shortened seasons, and both injuries are very serious. It’s unclear how he will return from the injury and if he can make it in the NFL. He was much more of a 7th round/UNFA type of player.

Round 5, #162 – DE Brandon Jenkins, Florida State – Grade: A

-This is fantastic value for Brandon Jenkins, who had he been healthy this past year would have likely been a top 50 pick. Even with the injury he could have easily gone 50-70 picks earlier. He’s a really good edge rusher, with a knack for making big plays. He plays with a nice burst and is quick to get to the edge. He gives the Redskins great insurance in case Brian Orakpo or Ryan Kerrigan were to get injured, and should offer some situational depth as well.

Round 6, #191 – S Bacarri Rambo – Georgia – Grade: B+

-Rambo had a productive but troubled career at Georgia. He’s got good ball skills and plays centerfield pretty well, but he struggles some in man coverage and can get sucked in with fakes. In the 6th round though he’s a great value and should help on special teams.

Round 7, #228 – RB Jawan Jamison, Rutgers – Grade: B

-Jamison is a really good fit for the Redskins zone blocking scheme, and is a nice value at this pick. The Redskins need to find competent back-ups to Alfred Morris and Jamison could be just the guy.

Overall: B

-The Redskins get some bonus points for the Robert Griffin III deal which bumps this up from a lower grade, but overall this draft is the ultimate high risk/high reward. Just about every player has a fairly significant risk factor and the Redskins made a big reach with their top pick in David Amerson. The saving grace of this class is the fact that the Redskins addressed many of their needs and the overall upside of the group. Landing great values like Jenkins and Jamison late really could help make this a good class. The bottom line is this class could go either way. Five years from now it could be graded as an A+ or an F.
