Scouting Report – DE Melvin Ingram

NFL Draft

2012 NFL DRAFT SCOUTING REPORT

DE Melvin Ingram:

Measurables:

DE Melvin Ingram

Height:  6’2”

Weight: 276 lbs.

PROS:

  • Great first step, gets off the ball quickly at the snap
  • Fantastic athlete, can drop back into coverage
  • Very good speed, both in edge rushing and pursuit
  • Versatile, can play inside, outside or even standup
  • Smart player, takes good angles and finds ways to disrupt the pass even without getting to the QB
  • Plays with good leverage
  • Good counter moves can disengage from a blocker
  • Extremely high motor, always around the football

CONS:

  • A bit of a tweener; while he could probably work in every system, he might be more of a super utility player than an every down guy.
  • While he played strong in college, does he have that anchor needed for the Pros?
  • Not ideal height for a DE or OLB
  • Only a 1 year starter, lack of overall experience
  • Can overrun plays at times, needs to be more instinctive

ANALYSIS:

I like Ingram probably more than most, so it is nice to see he’s starting to get the recognition he deserves. Ingram has the ability to be a dominant pass rusher and an excellent penetrator wherever he plays. Most see him as a traditional 4-3 end, or possibly able to stand up, but I think he could even work in a 3-4 alignment, as an End. He doesn’t have the prototypical size, so you’d need a strong NT next to him, but I could see him be very similar to Calais Campbell. He’s one of my favorite players in this draft, and has the potential to be a perennial All-Pro. He should be the top pass rusher selected and is a top 10 talent (though might not go that high).
