Lavonte David: The Lost Superstar

Steve Shoup

By Sebastian Salazar

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are one of two teams (Jacksonville Jaguars) that are winless and are the laughing stock of the NFL. The offense can’t score any points, the defense cannot stop anyone and the Head Coach has more questions about himself and the team than answers. Usually when a team is 0-7, everything is going wrong around them. For this team however, there is one bright spot, his name is Lavonte David.

Fans that do not follow the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or the NFC South don’t really know who this guy is. Most people just remember him as the guy who pushed Jets QB Geno Smith out of bounds, got a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and lost the game for the Bucs. Besides that one bad play, his play has been compared to All Pro LB Derrick Brooks. Derrick Brooks won defensive player of the year in 2002, the same year the Bucs won the Super Bowl. No one would have thought the Bucs would get another great outside line backer, Lavonte David is proving he is just as good, or maybe better.
David leads the team in sacks (he is a coverage LB), in tackles with 60, and is the leader of the up and coming defense.

Most fans think of Darrelle Revis or Gerald McCoy when you think about the Tampa Bay defense, little do they know that Lavonte David is the engine that keeps the defense moving. He is in charge of calling the plays and getting everyone in the right position, and he is only 23 years old! Derrick Brooks himself said “ Lavonte at this point of his career is already better than me when I was 23” Huge words from a future Hall of Famer. David will get only better and better and become a household name very soon.
