NFL Weekly Transaction Tracker

Matt Pearce

The first round of the NFL Draft occurred last night, and the rest of the draft will continue tonight and tomorrow. While the draft has been the main focus of the football world, some transactions occurred in the run up to it. One major signing is discussed below and, as always, the rest of the transactions are down below with some of the more significant ones highlighted in red.

Washington Redskins sign CB Josh Norman

After the Carolina Panthers bizarrely pulled their franchise tag off Norman, 28, he signed a few days later with Washington.

He signed a five-year contract worth $75 million with $36.5 million fully guaranteed and a signing bonus of $15 million. The contract averages $15 million per season.

With this contract, he accomplished his goal of being the highest-paid cornerback in the league. The next highest is Darrelle Revis of the New York Jets, who averages slightly more than $14 million per season.

Norman is coming off a 2015 season where he was arguably the best cornerback in the league. He intercepted four passes to go along with 19 passes defensed and three forced fumbles. He was a first-team All-Pro and earned his first Pro Bowl berth.

The 2015 season saw him make the leap into elite territory. Before, he was a solid cornerback, but he took his game to a whole new level.

In his first three seasons (2012-2014), he started 22 games after the Panthers selected him in the fifth round of the draft.

In Washington, Norman instantly becomes the No. 1 cornerback. Opposite him with be Bashaud Breeland, an emerging third-year player.

Cornerback was one of the bigger needs for the Redskins, especially with Chris Culliver recovering from a torn ACL suffered in November. The team no longer has to address the position early in the draft.
