NFL Weekly Transaction Tracker

The two biggest news stories in the NFL this week come from the Eagles trading up in the draft and the Panthers rescinding the franchise tag from cornerback Josh Norman. However, neither of these moves are discussed below, as one was a draft pick only trade, and we’ll discuss Norman when he signs with a new team. One signing is discussed below and, as always, the rest of the transactions are down below with some of the more significant ones highlighted in red.

Houston Texans release QB Brian Hoyer

By releasing Hoyer, their starting quarterback for most of the 2015 season, the Texans continued their changes at the position.

Ever since the Texans signed Brock Osweiler to a $72 million contract, they had been expected to move on from the 30-year-old Hoyer.

He started nine regular season games and one postseason game for Houston last season.

In the regular season he threw for 2,606 yards, 19 touchdowns, seven interceptions and completed 60.7 percent of his passes. He had a quarterback rating of 91.4.

Hoyer’s performance in the Texans’ playoff loss to Kansas City was awful. He turned the ball over five times (four interceptions and one fumble) while completing only 44.1 percent of his passes in Houston’s 30-0 loss.

After the game, it was apparent the Texans needed an upgrade at the position to be a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

Prior to Houston, Hoyer was in Cleveland where he started 16 games in two seasons. (A torn ACL limited him to three games in 2013.)

He has already visited the New York Jets and Denver Broncos as a free agent.
