NFL Weekly Transaction Tracker

Matt Pearce

The NFL draft is less than three weeks away. While teams are focusing on finalizing their draft boards, free agency is still going on. One signing is discussed below and, as always, the rest of the transactions are down below with some of the more significant ones highlighted in red.

Oakland Raiders re-sign LB Aldon Smith

If not for a suspension, Smith would have been signed a long time ago.

The Raiders took a chance by signing Smith, 26, to a contract last season. This offseason, he rewarded them by only really considered re-signing with Oakland.

He signed a two-year contract worth $11 million. However, a lot of this money is in the form of per-game roster bonuses, meaning he will only earn the money if he plays. This protects the Raiders from further suspensions and for the start of the 2016 season when Smith is suspended.

On the field, there is no doubt about his talent.

As a rookie with the 49ers in 2011, he recorded 14 sacks. The former first-round pick followed his strong rookie season with an even better sophomore year, taking down the quarterback 19.5 times in 2012.

After these two stellar seasons, he started to run into off-the-field issues. He played 11 games in 2013, seven in 2014 and nine in 2015.

Keeping Smith around allows the Raiders to have one of the best pass rushing combinations in football with Khalil Mack, Bruce Irvin and Smith.

Assuming Smith stays out of trouble, this is a good signing for the Raiders. Even if he does, the contract structure protects the team.
