NFL Weekly Transaction Tracker

Matt Pearce

As the NFL enters the final quarter of the season, it was a quiet week for transactions. Almost every move came from teams playing around with the bottom of their roster. One signing is discussed below and, as always, the rest of the moves are down below with some of the more significant ones highlighted in red.

Cincinnati Bengals sign OT Eric Winston

With the Bengals in the midst of the playoff hunt, they have bolstered their offensive line by signing Winston, a veteran offensive tackle.

Andre Smith, the starting right tackle for Cincinnati, was placed on injured reserve with a torn triceps after he suffered the injury early in week 12 against the Houston Texans.

So far, Cincinnati has tried two different approaches to replacing Smith. First, they substituted Marshall Newhouse at the right tackle position. After working with this setup, left guard Clint Boling moved to right tackle with Mike Pollack coming in at guard. The latter of these two approaches worked better.

Winston is a 31-year old veteran who is in his ninth season as a pro. He spent 2006-2011 with the Houston Texans after they drafted him in the third round of the 2006 NFL Draft out of Miami (FL). He spent the 2012 season with the Kansas City Chiefs and then the 2013 season with the Arizona Cardinals.

This offseason, he signed a contract with the Seattle Seahawks, but they cut him at the end of training camp.

Other than his rookie season, Winston has played in and started every game his teams have played in.

With the Cardinals last season, Pro Football Focus (PFF) graded him as the eighth-worst offensive tackle in the league. That is the only season that PFF has him graded as negative. (They began grading in 2007, meaning his rookie season is not available.) As it took him this long to find a team, it is likely that his play has suffered a sudden drop off.

Adding the president of the NFL Players Association makes sense for the Bengals. They have aspirations to make a deep playoff run this season, but need a strong offensive line to achieve this. Newhouse has struggled in his time at right tackle, so why not bring in a veteran and see what he has to offer?
