The Ravens have made their first move in free agency by signing DT Chris Canty.

Just moments ago, the Baltimore Ravens signed free agent DT Chris Canty.

The deal is worth a total of $8 million over 3 years with only $2.8 million guaranteed.  This is the Ravens first signing of a player in free agency so far.

Canty was cut from the New York Giants in a salary cap move earlier in the week.

He is a 6 foot 7 inch, 317 pound defensive lineman.  While playing for the Giants he was a 4-3 DT but, the conversion to a 3-4 DE or even a 3-4 NT shouldn’t be to hard.

Last year Canty had 26 tackles and 3 sacks in only 9 games.  The year before, he had 47 tackles and 4 sacks in a full season.

This move is a good step towards strengthening the Ravens defensive line. Nose tackle was considered to be a weakness last season.  If he plays DE, he will be in the rotation with Arthur Jones and Pernell McPhee for the DE position opposite to Haloti Ngata.  No matter what position he plays in the base defense, he will be a DT in sub packages and strengthens the Ravens defensive line rotation, where, you can never have enough depth.

This deal was first reported by Canty himself, who posted a picture of the contract on Instagram.
