Redskins Weekly – Midseason Recap & Preview vs. Saints

Washington Commanders Washington Redskins Keys to the Game

1- The season is half way over and the Redskins at 3-5 are right about where I expected.

I probably would have thought 2-6 but 3-5 is OK.  I didn’t come into this season thinking the team was a competitor in the NFC East but the division has been down to say the least so they are.  But I expect them to fade in the second half as the Eagles and maybe the Giants separate themselves.

Most looked at this season as a start for Scot McCloughan and he was going to get this season and at least next to mold his type of roster.  I think after eight games we should be intrigued by the draft class McCloughan got last spring as many have seen plenty of playing time.  And we know who they are.

On the other hand the free agent class is not that pretty.  But should that not be a surprise since McCloughan was more known for the draft and not free agency.  Pot Roast has been a non-factor but thankfully he is only on a one year deal unlike a Jason Hatcher signed pre-Scot.  Has Paea been a factor like we were told he would be?  I am happy with Chris Culliver as most are and should be a solid starter as long he can stay on the field.  Dashon Golson has been OK but for the safeties of the past he has been a slight upgrade?  Jeron Johnson now has a chance to show something starting Sunday.

The key is going to be what McCloughan can continue in the next few drafts.  As long as Griffin is eventually cut the Redskins will have cap space to get back into free agency but this isn’t his wheelhouse.  And a lot of teams will have cap space unlike years past.

A 2016 draft will not be enough though to fill this teams holes.  And if Kirk Cousins isn’t the answer a major one still is there.  Maybe he picks it up second half and is the guy.  But if he plays his way into the starter in 2016 who says he stays?  This team especially the owner has not supported him and the chance to move on could look a lot better to even a nice guy like Cousins.  If the Skins want him then plenty of others will too.

2- I am actually excited for this game versus New Orleans on Sunday at FedEx.

Maybe because the Saints have giving up like 150 points the past two weeks.  If this offense can’t score big points and make big plays this week it ain’t happening.  Desean should make plays finally if he can run like he normally does.  But can the Skins stop Brees since no one has in a month?  I doubt it even it is on grass.  But I am going with the Skins at home….38-31.
