Here is my updated prediction for the Redskins 8 man practice squad:

RB Chris Thompson

-I don’t think the Redskins really want to lose Thompson, but given the injury he’s coming off of and the fact that he’s fumbled twice in preseason I think they will risk exposing him to waivers. He probably hasn’t done enough to earn a spot, and this year the Redskins have some really good competition for this roster. Thompson though will probably get called up if any team starts expressing an interest in him. The Redskins will likely use his PS time to work him more as a punt returner so they could feel confident with him in that role.

RB Jawan Jamison

-Ideally the Redskins wouldn’t keep two running backs on the practice squad, but I think they will try to hang on to their 7th rounder. Jamison could have some potential and with a year in the system could make a serious run at a roster spot next year.

WR Lance Lewis

-This could be a really tough call, but I think that given Briscoe’s age and potential the team will give him one more shot (unless they could maybe trade him for a 7th rounder), that will mean Lewis is back on the practice squad. He did show some nice potential and since there could be some open receiver spots next year, he’s a good guy to keep around.

WR Nick Williams

-keeping two receivers probably isn’t the Redskins first choice, but Nick Williams is starting to play his way into consideration for his role. With Santana Moss an impending free agent the Redskins lack a real back-up slot receiver. Williams could be that guy (albeit a project), and he could also end up as an option for the team’s returner. He’s a nice little project to stash away for next year.

OL Xavier Nixon

-Nixon had some real hype to be drafted and was definitely the best upside UDFA the Redskins signed. He’s not going to get one of the 9 roster spots for the offensive line (assuming they keep that many), but he should earn a spot on the practice squad to hopefully be back next season.

TE Emmanuel Ogbuehi

-Keeping a 6th offensive player and another tight end with 4 on the roster seems unlikely, but the Redskins don’t have a ton of options for the practice squad on defense. Ogbuehi has had a solid camp/preseason and the team could look to reward him with a spot to start the year. If the Redskins need to add someone else to the practice squad to improve depth at another position it could be Ogbuehi’s spot that is in jeopardy, but until then they should give him a shot.

LB William Compton

-The Redskins brought in a number of inside linebacker options as undrafted free agents and it became clear that Compton was the best of the bunch. With the Redskins top 4 ILB’s all free agents next year, keeping Compton on the practice squad is a must. He won’t challenge for a starting role next year, but he’s a good bet to win a back-up job if he develops at all.

S Jose Gumbs

-The Redskins secondary is extremely thin, particularly at safety. Even if the Redskins keep 5 safeties on the roster, they should hang on to Gumbs for depth. He’s had a couple nice plays in the preseason and could maybe one day be a back-up.
