Skins Switching to 3-4 Defense is a Joke

12:15 am in Uncategorized by geoffnelowet

We’re looking at sample size data, but the Skins, after three games, rank 32 out of 32 in total defense. Last season they ranked 10th overall, and since 2007, the Skins have had a top-ten defense every year.

Honestly, I think the 3-4 is a superior defensive scheme to the 4-3 in this day and age. It allows for more masked blitzes, and the opposing offense is never sure where the fourth, fifth or sixth pass rusher is coming from. In a league where every team is passing more and more, the 3-4 is an obvious choice.

That is, unless your defensive personnel are not fit to run a 3-4. I’m not going to launch into a long-winded diatribe about Albert Haynesworth, but in short, no matter how wrong he is, he’s still the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL, and it’s in the Skins best interest to keep him happy. No matter how wrong, spoiled or immoral he is, it’s still in the Skins absolute best interest to keep him happy. Period.

That being said, Haynseworth is unhappy and not in position to play to his strengths.

Andre Carter had his worst years of his career while standing up in a 3-4 back in San Francisco.

Jeremy Jarmin, a guy that the organization gave up a 3rd round pick for, barely made the opening day roster because he’s too small to play defensive end in a 4-3, and he’s too big to play OLB.

I think this laundry list speaks for itself. It’s cool that the Redskins’ defense can pick up a few more sacks, but when you give up 497 passing yards in a game, you’re really not doing much for yourself in the long run (or at all, really).

Kelly: QB pick unlikely

I couldn’t help but laugh when I read this. At first I was intrigued because I wasn’t sure there was a Kelly involved in Redskins personnel decisions, but when I saw it was wide receiver Malcolm Kelly I LOL’d.

Since when was Malcolm Kelly in the know about Redskins draft strategy? Why was this story even printed? The article is basically filled with quotes from Kelly and Chris Cooley saying they don’t know anything, so why is anyone reading this? I guess the theory behind it is that Kelly went to Oklahoma as Sam Bradford did, but come on, they played together for one year. The funniest thing about this is how the title implies that Kelly is delivering news as if he’s an authority on anything, and not to mention he’s saying that not only will the Redskins not select Bradford, but they won’t take a QB at all at any point in the draft. What’s next? Portis: season ticket prices will rise 20% next season. Imagine how Cooley feels being asked the most irrelevant questions. I’d be shocked if the Richmond-Times Dispatch came to me and asked me if VCU was going to propose new budget cuts. How is this any different or any less irrelevant to the players?

Some of the “news” that’s printed is just so inane sometimes.

Butler cinderella story overrated

Butler making the final four is a pretty big surprise, but George Mason being there a few years ago was WAY bigger. Butler is like 92-14 over the past three seasons, and they’ve continually been in and out of the rankings. If Gonzaga made the final four it would be the same thing.

McNabb and the Redskins

I can’t help but LOL at this trade. The Redskins had this plan of being conservative, making responsible decisions with the appropriate management in place, etc etc.

Here’s what they’ve done:

Signed LARRY JOHNSON

Signed Willie Parker

Traded away picks for a 33-year-old QB

I believe the phrase for this is cognitive dissonance.

In seriousness, this trade wasn’t that bad, but when considering that it’s the Redskins…it’s just so, so typical.

Golden State Warriors at Washington Wizards

Marquee match-up tonight with HUGE lottery implications. Both teams are 23-53 on the season, so get ready for some serious draft posturing. I hear Blatche might be out with a stuffy nose, and Steph Curry broke out with a few pimples this morning, so he’s also a scratch.

But in reality, I could only wish this were true because the Wizards are so bad that they don’t need to try to tank. Half their team is D-League caliber as it is, and they legitimately lost sixteen in row while out-hustling nearly every team they faced.

Some may wonder why I would ever waste my time watching games like these, but here’s why: The Warriors are always fun to watch no matter how bad they are — they’re like the Phoenix Suns but terrible. They run up and down the court, score almost at will, and they do so with a bright young nucleus with serious star potential. Unfortunately they give up 130 points a night, so they’re continual losers, but unarguably fun to watch.

And for the Wizards: I like watching Blatche become a good player. And by good I mean good — not the next Kevin Garnett as some myopic Wizards homers like to believe (and that may include Flip Saunders). I also enjoy watching the hilarity JaVale McGee — easily one of the dumbest players in the NBA with the most natural ability. Against Houston the other night he scored something like 13 points in four minutes, and then he’ll follow that up by picking up four fouls in twelve minutes. The guy is one of a kind.

I think that’s all for now…
