First Round Draft Grades

April 29, 2011 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

1. Carolina Panthers: QB Cam Newton, Auburn

I really didn’t like this pick at all, and up until yesterday afternoon I figured it had to be a smoke screen, as no team could legitimately think that Newton was the answer. The Panthers were down right awful last season, and you can’t expect a quarterback like Newton will turn that around. I’m not going to deny that Newton has the size, speed, arm, and agility to become a great quarterback, the problem is he’s not even close to ready. Drafting Newton is basically saying you are willing to wait 2-3 years to see your quarterback in action. The problem is I don’t think the Panthers or their fans will wait that long, and that is when you stunt a quarterback’s growth and seriously raise the chances of him being a bust.

Grade: D-

2. Denver Broncos: OLB Von Miller, Texas A&M-

On one hand I love this move because Miller is an impact player and one of the best pass rushers coming out this year. On the other hand though Miller isn’t a great fit for that defense, since they are a 4-3 team. While the Broncos say Miller can handle the typical 4-3 duties, and I believe that is true, it isn’t using him to his fullest potential. Also on passing downs I don’t like the idea of him rushing the passer from a 3-point stance. I believe in the NFL that will take away some of his advantage over the offensive lineman, and if you put him in a two point stance that could make him more susceptible to the run. I think Denver will need to really create a hybrid position and scheme where he is rushing the passer the majority of the time, for them to get the most effect out of him.

Grade: B+

3. Buffalo Bills: DE/DT Marcel Dareus, Alabama-

I love this pick for the Bills, while Buffalo has a number of needs, this team needed either Von Miller or Dareus to fall to them, and it happened. Dareus can play any position along the line, and he should have a major impact on the Bills going forward. This was a no-brainer pick and a big day for Buffalo.

Grade: A+

4. Cincinnati Bengals: WR A.J. Green, Georgia-

The Bengals filled a need here, but it is hardly their biggest one. Yes the Bengals are losing T.O. and Chad Johnson, but they have a couple good young receivers behind them. They needed to add one guy in this draft, but maybe didn’t have to use their first rounder to do so. I like A.J. Green overall, but drafting receivers early is always a risk. Even the best receivers in the league are only as good as their QB/offensive line. Also the Bengals haven’t been a pass first team for a couple of years now, so you are talking about drafting a guy who will only be involved (not counting blocking) on between 40-45% of your offensive plays.

Grade: B-

5. Arizona Cardinals: CB Patrick Peterson, LSU-

Can’t really fault the Cardinals here, there really wasn’t a top 5 quarterback in this draft and while they had needs at OT and OLB no one was a surefire talent. Peterson on the other hand is a surefire talent and you can make the case that he was a top 3 player. He’s a day one starter and should blanket half the field for the Cardinals. It wasn’t their biggest need, but it was great value at this pick, and they didn’t reach for anyone.

Grade: A-

6. Atlanta Falcons (from Browns): WR Julio Jones, Alabama-

Atlanta moved up 21 spots to draft Julio Jones and it cost them. They traded their 27th pick, 59th pick (2nd round), and 125th pick (4th round), plus their 1st and 4th next year to grab Jones. While I like Jones, I question whether it was worth it to give that much up to make a deal. While grabbing a WR early makes more sense than say the Bengals since they are a more complete team, but that is an awful lot to give up. Especially since Jon Baldwin ended up being selected at their original spot. I know most draft analysts had Baldwin 30-40 spots below Jones, but honestly I think they were a lot closer than most people think. And regardless of where you had them ranked can you really make the case that Jones is worth more than Baldwin, 59th, and 125th will be this year? Not to mention what they gave up next season.

Grade: C

7. San Francisco 49ers: OLB Aldon Smith, Missouri-

I absolutely loved this pick for San Francisco, I think Smith was the best rush linebacker in this class after Miller and a budding star. The 49ers made the right choice in bypassing a quarterback here, and I think they got an immediate impact guy in Smith.

Grade: A

8. Tennessee Titans: QB Jake Locker, Washington-

What were the Titans thinking here? I honestly have no idea because QB’s Blaine Gabbert and Christian Ponder were on the board, as was DT Nick Fairley any of those would have been far superior picks to Jake Locker. Locker has some potential and looks to be a team leader (but so do the other QB’s on the board), but he is the type of guy who needs 3 years on the bench to develop. The Titans needed to add a quarterback who can play this year (Gabbert, Ponder) and not one who is wildly inaccurate like Locker. I really question this pick and think Tennessee will regret this decision.

Grade: D-

9. Dallas Cowboys: OT Tyron Smith, USC-

This was a great pick for the Cowboys as they have finally addressed their offensive line. When they resign (i think it is really likely) LT Doug Free they will have the bookends to keep Tony Romo upright. Smith I think has big time potential and is a great fit in Dallas.

Grade: A

10. Jacksonville Jaguars (from Redskins): QB Blaine Gabbert, Missouri-

The Jags got their QB of the future, but they had to give up their 2nd rounder (49th) to move up 6 spots and that is a pretty high cost. Considering the Jaguars were 8 -8 last season I thought they might grab two immediate impact players and try to contend, but they appear ready to focus on 2012. It’s a bit of a risk but I do like Gabbert (more than both Newton and Locker) so it could pan out.

Grade: C+

11. Houston Texans: DE J.J. Watt, Wisconsin-

The Texans got their first piece of their new 3-4 puzzle and it is a good one in Watt. I think he is a great fit for this defense and fills a big need. Houston has a playoff, maybe even a Super Bowl caliber offense, but their defense has held them back, anything that changes that is a win in my book.

Grade: B+

12. Minnesota Vikings: QB Christian Ponder, Florida State-

I want to say that I love Ponder and think that he could very well be the top quarterback to come from this class. Unfortunately I still think the Vikings really reached for this pick. While Ponder might be my favorite quarterback I don’t know if he was top 15 material. Minnesota could regret reaching so high for a quarterback, but only time will tell.

Grade: B-

13. Detroit Lions: DT Nick Fairley, Auburn-

I know this shocked some people, but really I think it was brilliant. Fairley was arguably a top 5 talent and without a doubt was a top 10 guy. He fell because of everyone over drafting quarterbacks, and it ends up being the Lions gain. Fairley and Suh will team up to form perhaps the best DT pairing in the NFL. Both are elite penetrators, and will cause absolute havoc in the backfield. I don’t know how opposing teams expect to block both DT’s and I’m pretty sure that is what the Lions are counting on.

Grade: A+

14. St. Louis Rams: DE Robert Quinn, UNC-

The Rams got a great pass rusher to complement Chris Long and rotate with James Hall. While it wasn’t their biggest need, having three guys to rotate is key, and given Hall’s age it was good forward thinking. They could have gone DT here, but Quinn was too hard to pass up.

Grade: B+

15. Miami Dolphins: OG/C Mike Pouncey, Florida-

The Dolphins landed the top interior lineman in this draft class and didn’t reach for a quarterback or running back so I call that a win for Miami. Pouncey might have been overdrafted slightly, but I do think he will be highly successful in the NFL.

Grade: B

16. Washington Redskins (from Jaguars): OLB Ryan Kerrigan, Purdue-

Washington did a great job moving back 6 spots and picking up another top 50 pick. That in and of itself makes this a positive grade for the Redskins. And while I wouldn’t have minded seeing another move back considering how stacked the board was, Washington got good value here. Kerrigan was easily a top 15 player, but he got moved down given the QB rush. He is a nice bookend to Orakpo and gives Washington another player opposing offenses have to keep an eye on.

Grade: B+ (compared to previous years it might be an A+++++ just for doing the right thing)

17. New England Patriots: OT Nate Solder, Colorado-

Solder is a bit of a reach here, but he is still good value and fills a big need for New England. Solder has a bit of a bust factor but I do like him.

Grade: B

18. San Diego Chargers: DT Corey Liuget, Illinois-

While I love Liuget, he never seemed like an option at either the NT or 5 technique (or at least his strong suit), I guess the Chargers feel he can play there and if so then this could be a very good pick. There is a slight risk here, but pretty big reward.

Grade: B+

19. New York Giants: CB Prince Amukamara, Nebraska-

Was CB the Giants biggest need, no not even close, but he was by far the best player on the board. Amukamara strengthens the Giants secondary and allows them to matchup very well against division foes like the Cowboys and Eagles, who have great receiving corps.

Grade: A-

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: DE Adrian Clayborn, Iowa-

While you can make a case that Bowers would have been the pick there, it is hard to fault Clayborn. Clayborn looks to be a top notch defensive end, who plays the run well and will get serious pressure on the quarterback. That to me is a great pick for the Bucs and gets them a guy that fits their system and their needs.

Grade: A-

21. Cleveland Browns (from Chiefs): DT Phil Taylor, Baylor-

This was a little surprising since Taylor seemed to be coveted by 3-4 teams as a nose tackle. Now I can see why a number of 4-3 teams would be interested, because having a big tackle like that really slows down the run, the problem is the Browns already have that guy in current NT A. Rubin. While it won’t be easy to run inside against the Browns with essentially two NT’s, the Browns lack the traditional penetrator you would typically see. Maybe they feel that Taylor can still generate a lot of pressure up the middle, but I have some doubts on how consistently he can do that.

Grade: B-

22. Indianapolis Colts: OT Anthony Castonzo, Boston College-

The Colts top priority is to protect Peyton Manning, and they found a great guy to do it in Castonzo. I love this pick for them and think that it will make their offense that much scarier.

Grade: A+

23. Philadelphia Eagles: G/T Danny Watkins, Baylor-

This pick was a little surprising, but I really love Danny Watkins so I can’t knock it at all. I think he fits best as a guard, but he could get a shot at RT as well. Either way they strengthened their line significantly and got a great player in Watkins.

Grade: A-

24. New Orleans Saints: DE Cam Jordan, Cal-

Jordan is a very good fit for the Saints because he can help them both inside and outside. He is a great value for this pick and could be a steal in this draft.

Grade: A-

25. Seattle Seahawks: G/T James Carpenter, Alabama-

Carpenter has been a late riser, but since his Senior Bowl his stock is soaring, he looks capable of either playing inside or lining up at RT. Both of which are big needs for Seattle. I’d say this is a moderate reach with Carimi and Sherrod on the board, but not so much to the point that I really take points off.

Grade: B

26. Kansas City Chiefs (from the Browns, via Atlanta…and the Ravens passing their pick): WR Jonathan Baldwin, Pittsburgh-

The Chiefs traded back, picked up an early 3rd and still landed a guy who was probably atop their draft board. Baldwin has a ton of upside and as I said before I really don’t see the differences between him and Julio Jones. He should be a great weapon for Matt Cassel and really help improve the Chiefs passing game.

Grade: A

27. Baltimore Ravens: CB Jimmy Smith, Colorado-

The Ravens passed on their draft pick which allowed the Chiefs to move up and ensure they got Baldwin. And while it appears the Ravens still got their man, the trade they apparently had worked out with the Bears fell through. One way or another Baltimore lost value with this fiasco and it needs to be seen as a black mark. Smith is a good consolation prize, but they still might have been able to land him later at the Bears pick.

Grade: D+

28. New Orleans Saints (from the Patriots): RB Mark Ingram-

Ingram is a nice pick for the Saints, but they paid the price to land him. They traded their 2nd round pick as well as their first next year to land the former Heisman Trophy winner. While I see the need for the Saints, I’m not sure such a drastic deal was warranted. There would have been some good backs on the board late in the 2nd round that the Saints could have jumped up a few spots to get, but used a 4th or 5th rounder as bait instead of next year’s 1st.

Grade:  C

29. Chicago Bears: T Gabe Carimi, Wisconsin-

The Bears did a great job here as I personally love Carimi. I think he is a stud tackle and is going to be a great addition to the Bears line. Both Jay Cutler and Matt Forte should be ecstatic with this pick and it really could propel them next season.

Grade: A+

30. New York Jets: DE/DT Muhammed Wilkerson, Temple-

Wilkerson fills a big need as the Jets  are losing Shaun Ellis this offseason, leaving a big hole at DE. Wilkerson is a bit raw, but he is a good value here and keeps that defense firing on all cylinders.

Grade: B+

31. Pittsburgh Steelers: DE Cameron Heyward, Ohio State-

Heyward is a good value here, and this is a good story as Heyward goes to the city where his Dad was a college football star. It doesn’t fill a big need for the Steelers, but I think he offers a lot of value at this spot.

Grade: A-

32. Green Bay Packers: OT Derrek Sherrod, Mississippi State-

The Packers offensive line last year didn’t protect Aaron Rodgers like they needed to, so this is a smart pick for the Packers. Sherrod should be a nice player at RT as I’m guessing Bulaga moves over to the left side (though it might not be for a year as Clifton is still there). Any move that strengthens this offense has to be seen as a plus and great value going forward.

Grade: B+

2011 Final NFL Mock Draft – Round 2

April 29, 2011 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

MOCK DRAFT: Round 117-32:Round 2:Round 3:Round 4Round 5

33. New England Patriots (From Carolina): WR Jon Baldwin, Pittsburgh-

With the Patriots addressing their line needs in the first I think they might look to adding a playmaker or two in the 2nd round. I have a hard time believing that Baldwin will fall into the 2nd round, but there are only a handful of places where he could fit at the bottom of round 1 meaning it could very well happen. If he does fall this far I think the Patriots will be quite happy to add another tall receiver and big play guy to Tom Brady’s arsenal.

34. Buffalo Bills: OT/OG Ben Ijalana, Villanova-

There is a chance the Bills could look at a quarterback like Andy Dalton, I’m thinking they stick to their board and go with another important position, offensive line. Ijalana really impresses me and I think he can be successful at either the tackle or the end spot. Considering how many holes their offensive line has Buffalo will be happy where ever he ends up. I know quarterback is a need, but I really think Ryan Fitzpatrick gives them some leeway that other teams don’t have.

35. Cincinnati Bengals: WR Torrey Smith, Maryland-

The Bengals will be looking to upgrade their passing weapons if they take a quarterback in the first round, and Smith is bay far the best receiver on the board. Smith has good size and the speed and quickness to stretch the field. With T.O. on the way out and Chad Johnson soon to follow, the Bengals need a number one receiver and Smith could fill that need.

36. Denver Broncos: DT Stephen Paea, Oregon State-

Paea is one of the best defensive tackles in this draft class, and while his stock took a hit with a knee injury at the Senior Bowl, this is still great value for the Broncos. Their defensive front 7 is basically a one man show and he is coming off a major injury. Adding Bowers was a good first step, but getting an elite run defender in the middle is key as well. The Broncos could consider a running back or linebacker with this pick, but DT is more important. Remember John Fox comes from a defensive background, and he saw in Carolina that you can win with just okay QB play if you have a good running game and defense.

37. Cleveland Browns: DT Marvin Austin, North Carolina-

The Browns are another team that is making a transition to a 4-3 defense, and now need to add the correct personnel. While the Browns have multiple needs for their new defense, adding Austin would be a great addition here. They already have more of a run-stuffing DT, so now they need to add one who can generate a bit of a pass rusd up the middle. Austin is a classic 3-technique, who should fit this system perfectly and collapse the pocket.

38. Arizona Cardinals: QB Andy Dalton, TCU-

I know this might be high for Dalton, but I think the Cardinals will appreciate his ability to start early over, a quarterback like Locker who might need some time to develop. Dalton is a safe pick, but one that could help put Arizona back into contention for the NFC West sooner rather than later.

39. Tennessee Titans: DE Jabaal Sheard, Pittsburgh-

At this point I don’t think there is a quarterback on the board worth taking (though technically all of these guys went much higher than their actual value), The Titans should look to grab the best player available. With defensive end Jason Babin preparing to leave via free agency, Tennessee needs to find a replacement. Sheard who has risen up draft boards given his versatility, would be an excellent fit here for the Titans. He and Fairley will team up to give Tennessee an elite unit on defense and help keep the Titans competitive.

40. Dallas Cowboys: DE Cameron Heyward, Ohio State-

With no top offensive linemen available, I think the Cowboys will take the best player available in Cameron Heyward. Heyward should be an instant starter for them at defensive end, and really improve that front 7. Heyward is a prototypical 5-technique, who generates good pressure and penetration. This is an absolute steal if he falls this far, but with the obsession over signal callers earlier it could happen.

41. Washington Redskins: G/C Rodney Hudson, Florida State-

I know the Skins have needs at RB, WR and QB, but until they get an offensive line in place it’s really not going to matter whom the Redskins have at their skill positions, as they simply won’t have the blocking to be effective. While the Redskins could look long and hard at NT Phil Taylor or DE Cameron Heyward, they need to upgrade this line in 4 spots. Hudson is preferred by some as a center, but I think he is a perfect zone blocking guard. He has quick hands and feet, and anchors extremely well. If the Skins grab him and stick him next to Trent Williams, they will be set on the left side of their line for years to come. By adding both Tyron Smith and Hudson, Washington’s greatest weakness will quickly become a strength.

42. Houston Texans: NT Phil Taylor, Baylor-

Although I figured the Texans wouldn’t forgo the opportunity to grab a corner in the top two rounds, I now think they might stay focused on their front 7 in the early rounds. Phil Taylor would be a great fit in Houston and give the Texans the classic nose tackle they are lacking. The last thing the Texans can afford to do is not bring in 3-4 talent, because if they don’t their defense won’t be able to stop anyone. Corner and safety are still major needs, but ones that I think Houston can address later. While a foot issue has come to light for Taylor I don’t see it moving him off this spot, I think it just ensured that his stock doesn’t rise too high.

43. Minnesota Vikings: QB Ryan Mallett, Arkansas-

The Vikings will likely be adding a veteran quarterback this offseason, but they also need add a young guy, who can start in a year or two. Mallet isn’t a perfect fit for Minnesota, but he could go here. Based on talent alone Mallet is a first round quarterback, but his off the field issues will make him slide some on draft day. It is entirely possible Mallet slides lower than this, but with no third round pick the Vikings will probably take the risk. Mallet could do well to develop under Offensive Coordinator Bill Musgrave, who is here to develop a young gun slinger.

44. Detroit Lions: CB Aaron Williams, Texas-

Williams would be a great fit here for Detroit as their CB’s last year were a huge disappointment (putting it nicely). While I could see Williams fitting in as a free safety I think he is capable enough to handle the starting CB duties for the Lions. He might never be a true shutdown type of guy, but I expect him to be a very good starter in this league.

45. San Francisco 49ers: OLB Justin Houston, Georgia-

With the 49ers landing their quarterback, they will turn to their biggest defensive need an add a pass rusher. Houston is the best pass rusher on the board and a good value with this pick. The 49ers didn’t get a ton of pressure from their linebackers last season, and a couple of their best guys are free agents making this a top priority. Houston is slipping some due to a positive drug test at the combine, but I don’t think it will hurt him too bad.

46. Denver Broncos (From Miami): ILB/OLB Martez Wilson, Illinois-

I know some people might not get behind the idea of using their top 3 picks to fix the defense, but that is exactly what they should do. Yes they still need some help at RB, but they can get a decent option in the mid-rounds. Wilson is a very capable linebacker, who can lineup at either SLB or MLB in a 4-3 system. Denver has needs at both spots and would be quite lucky to get him this low in the 2nd round.

47. St. Louis Rams: FS Rahim Moore, UCLA-

The Rams landed their top flight receiver in the first round, which leaves them with one big hole on offense, right guard. Unfortunately there isn’t a guard worth taking at this spot, meaning St. Louis needs to go with the best player on the board that fits them. The Rams lost O.J. Atogwe before the lockout, making free safety a pretty bare position. Moore is the type of player who can step in from day one and start for this team. Excellent value pick here, and one that should pay off nicely.

48. Oakland Raiders: C/G Stefen Wisniewski, Penn State-

Wisniewski’s uncle was an All-Pro center for the Raiders (and now their O-line coach), and I fully expect the Raiders to make Stefen their 2nd round choice if he is still on the board. While he could play guard for them, I think it is more likely he ends up their center.

49. Jacksonville Jaguars: QB Colin Kaepernick, Nevada-

The Jaguars are looking for a young quarterback to groom behind David Garrard and Kaepernick would give them excellent potential at this pick. Kaepernick is my 2nd favorite quarterback in this class behind Christian Ponder as I believe he has what it takes to succeed in this league. Kaepernick is one of the hardest workers out there and Jacksonville will have likely found their quarterback of the future with this pick.

50. San Diego Chargers: DE Christian Ballard, Iowa-

The Chargers get a fine 5-technique prospect here in Ballard. He gets excellent penetration, and is a relentless fighter in the trenches. He isn’t the biggest, strongest or fastest DE in this draft, but he might make opposing blockers work the hardest. This is a good value pick and fills a big need for the Chargers.

51. Tampa Bay: CB Brandon Harris, Miami-

With some pending legal troubles for Tampa’s starting corner (Talib), the Bucs will likely look to address the position early in the draft. Harris is a borderline 1st rounder, so this is an excellent value pick for Tampa. He should be able to step in for Talib from day one, and he gives the Bucs a very good cover guy.

52. New York Giants: RB Ryan Williams, Virginia Tech-

Running back could quickly become a major need for the Giants if they lose Ahmad Bradshaw in free agency. If that is the case look for the Giants to add a running back in the 2nd-4th rounds. Although they could decide to wait to address their RB need, but Williams will be tough to pass up. Williams has star running back potential, and the Giants place a high premium on the running game.

53. Indianapolis Colts: OT James Carpenter, Alabama-

In the year before the Colts drafted Peyton Manning, they drafted bookend tackles with their top two picks, and I’m thinking this could be the year that history repeats itself. Indy needs to find a way to protect Peyton Manning and finding two new tackles would be a good start. Indy’s tackle play last year was pretty bad, and It forced Manning to make a lot of questionable throws to avoid the pressure. If the Colts can add bookend tackles, they would be pretty much set on offense.

54. Philadelphia Eagles: DT Drake Nevis, LSU-

The Eagles could use another young defensive tackle to help balance their line, that right now is strong on the outside, but pretty thin on the interior. Nevis is pretty much a 4-3 tackle only and a good fit for Philly given his work ethic and quickness. He should help bring pressure up the middle, which should make their ends more effective.

55. Kansas City Chiefs: WR Leonard Hankerson, Miami-

Hankerson could be nabbed earlier, but if he does last this long then I think the Chiefs will be quite thrilled. Kansas City needs to keep adding quality targets to Matt Cassel’s arsenal and Hankerson would be a good fit. Hankerson isn’t the biggest or fastest receiver, but he should excel at the next level. The one real concern is his hands as at times he loses concentration and will have a multi-drop game, but otherwise he looks like a very good starting WR.

56. New Orleans Saints: DE Sam Acho, Texas-

The Saints need an end to complement Will Smith and Acho is the best guy still on the board. Acho doesn’t excel in anyone area but he is a quality pass rusher, who generates a good deal of pressure. He might have some trouble holding up at the point of attack against the run, but I like his potential.

57. Seattle Seahawks: CB Davon House, New Mexico State-

The Seahawks need to add a corner in the first two rounds of the draft, as there secondary got torched last season. House is a good value for this spot and he has good potential. He should be able to start year one, and has the ability to eventually be a number 1 corner.

58. Baltimore Ravens: CB Chris Brown, Texas-

The Ravens didn’t address the corner position in round one, which makes grabbing one here extremely important. Brown is a very good corner prospect and should be able to step into a starting role for the Ravens. I love the kid’s upside and really see him developing into a frontline guy at the next level.

59. Atlanta Falcons: WR Jerrel Jernigan, Troy:

Although the Falcons need another DE to compliment John Abraham, I’m thinking they continue to add weapons on offense. Roddy White is a great receiver, but the rest of their pass catchers are in need of an upgrade. Jernigan offers a legitimate burner for Matt Ryan and someone who will stretch the field, which should help open up the middle for the Falcons tight ends.

60. New England: RB Mikel Leshoure, Illinois:

The Patriots have a lot of picks to play with, so I see them going best player available with this pick and adding another weapon. While their ground game was nice last season, it didn’t have an elite feel to it, and it let them down when it mattered most. While the Pats have some talent in the backfield I really don’t think anyone of them is a legit number one tailback. Leshoure has that number one back potential, and is a steal late in the 2nd round.

61. San Diego Chargers (from New York Jets): WR Randall Cobb, Kentucky-

The Chargers could use an upgrade on the right side of their line, but I don’t think there is a good fit at tackle here. While San Diego will definitely keep Vincent Jackson, Malcolm Floyd is another story. Cobb doesn’t fit their traditional mold for WR’s, but he has a ton of value and can help them in the return game as well (Sporles is on his way out).

62. Chicago Bears: G Will Rackley, Leigh-

Chicago could double up on linemen in the first two rounds, as they simply can’t hope to compete next year without an adequate line. Rackley is flying up draft boards, and for good reason. Despite being a small school guy, he shows excellent potential and should be able to start early in his career. With Solder and Rackley, the Bears might have the beginning of a quality offensive line.

63. Pittsburgh Steelers: CB Ras-I Dowling, Virginia-

The Steelers desperately need to improve their pass defense this season as elite quarterbacks were able to take advantage of their holes in their secondary. Adding Dowling at the end of Round two would be a good value, and he should instantly upgrade the Steelers pass defense. While I think Dowling is a more talented player, he could fall given his murky injury history. If he checks out though Pittsburgh will be getting one heck of a player here.

64. Green Bay Packers: OLB Dontay Moch, Nevada-

This might be a slight reach, but Moch is moving up draft boards and is the next best rush linebacker available. He has exceptional speed off the edge and should, develop nicely as a complement to Matthews. Moch is a bit raw, but the upside is there, that I see the Packers pulling the trigger.

MOCK DRAFT: Round 117-32:Round 2:Round 3:Round 4Round 5

1. Carolina Panthers: DT Marcell Dareus, Alabama-

With no Andrew Luck in the mix the Panthers, will go to plan B, which is to choose from one of the elite defensive players in the draft or wide receiver A.J. Green. There might be a big push for the Panthers to go for Green, given their need for a play making receiver (especially to help in the development of Jimmy Claussen), but I think that would be a big mistake. The Panthers have spent a number of draft picks on  receivers the last few years, and while Green is better than all of them, that is just too many resources to put into one position, especially when they have so many other holes. While there are some people who will point to Cam Newton as the answer, he simply isn’t a franchise quarterback of the ilk of Peyton Manning.

While I considered Bowers for the top spot, and have had Fairley there before I think Dareus makes the most sense. While the Panthers could use star DE to replace Charles Johnson, he also might no longer fit in their system. New HC Ron Rivera has talked about employing both the 4-3 and the 3-4. That would make Dareus the be perfect fit for the the Panthers as he as adept to playing both inside at tackle and outside as a 3-4 end. While it isn’t his primary position, Dareus could even play some NT as well. Wherever he is lining up, Dareus projects to be a force at the next level. He should be an excellent run defender and put more than ample pressure on the quarterback.

2. Denver Broncos: CB Patrick Peterson, LSU-

I had considered Peterson as a potential option in the past, but with the Broncos resigning Champ Bailey, I thought the need was lessened. Now though with Da’Quan Bowers’ recent injury concerns, Peterson is the best value that makes sense for Denver. If Dareus were still on the board Denver could go that route, but instead they will make due with adding an elite corner. Peterson and Bailey should really shutdown opposing passing attacks. The Broncos will still need to address their need at defensive end, but they can look to that later in the draft.

3. Buffalo Bills: OLB Von Miller, Texas A&M-

As the days go by Miller’s stock keeps rising and rising, to the point that I just can’t see the Bills passing on him. I know they could go QB here, or the top corner on their board, but Miller is an elite talent and fills a major need. He’s making it harder and harder for the Bills to pass him up, to the point that I just can’t see it happening.

4. Cincinnati Bengals: QB Cam Newton, Auburn-

While wide receiver could be the pick, or DE with Bowers on the board, I’m thinking the Bengals bite the bullet and grab Newton. Newton’s workout was a start, and if he follows it up with a big combine and pro day he will likely be picked in the top 5. If the Bengals can’t convince Palmer to come back and play, they will look for his replacement. Personally, I think that this is far too high for Newton, but some team will pull the trigger on him. It will be tough to pass up A.J. Green, but it could end up happening with Newton on the board.

5. Arizona Cardinals: OLB Robert Quinn, North Carolina-

While Quarterback remains a major need, I think the Cardinals might try to trade back into the 1st round to land their signal caller. Gabbert is a decent fit for them, but a guy like Ponder or Dalton might make more sense at the end of the 1st or top of the 2nd round. Quinn on the other hand fills a huge need for them and can really impact that defense.

6. Cleveland Browns: WR A.J. Green, Georgia-

The Browns have two major needs (WR and DE) and either one could make sense for this pick. I have previously linked them to both a receiver and defensive end, but now I believe they will look receiver first. Although I don’t normally advocate receivers over more important positions, like the defensive line, it is hard to argue against Green. Green has the skill set and potential to be the next elite receiver in this league. Given the Browns lack of a quality wide receiver, Green makes a lot of sense for them. Although, they could still look at DE with a guy like Robert Quinn or Aldon Smith, I think Green is too good to pass up.

7. San Francisco 49ers: QB Blaine Gabbert, Missouri -

The 49ers luck out here as Blaine Gabbert falls to them and they land their quarterback of the future. I think Gabbert is a good fit for the 49ers and Harbaugh will be able to shape him to a very good starting quarterback. With their biggest need filled the 49ers, could even look to challenge for the NFC West title next year.

8. Tennessee Titans: DT Nick Fairley, Auburn-

The Titans have been searching for an inside pass rusher for a couple years now, and now they finally have one in Nick Fairley. Fairley is a top 5 talent, but one that could slip since he isn’t as good of a fit in the 3-4. Fairley will be a big boost to the Titans pass rush, that could be hurting from the potential loss of Jason Babin. Tennessee needs a disruptor along their defensive line and that fits Fairley perfectly.

9. Dallas Cowboys: CB Prince Amukamara, Nebraska-

The Cowboys have many needs, but I see them going hard after a corner back in this draft. I think Amukamara is the best CB available. Amukamara will fill the Cowboys’ biggest need, but there are some rumors that Dallas isn’t high on him. I’m guessing that is a smokescreen. If he falls this far, Dallas is getting an absolute steal as I really don’t see much that separates Amukamara and Peterson.

10. Washington Redskins: OT Tyron Smith, USC-

While I had focused on the defensive side of the ball, I’ve been ignoring the Redskins biggest need. No not quarterback or receiver, but offensive tackle. The Redskins need a bookend to Trent Williams, and Tyron Smith is the best in this draft. I was hoping they would fill this need through free agency, but with those waters murky right now, I don’t think the Redskins can avoid the position during draft weekend. With few picks, they should go ahead and just take Smith, who will give Washington two potential elite tackles that should help impact both the run and the pass.

Trading down is still a very viable option and one I think the Redskins have to consider.

11. Houston Texans: OLB Aldon Smith, Missouri-

Houston will be in the midst of transitioning to a 3-4 defense, and with no corner back to take they should focus this pick on grabbing a front 7 player. This pick should come down to either a rush linebacker or a 3-4 DE. The latest rumors have Smith going to the Texans, and I tend to agree with that statement. I do believe Texans DC Wade Phillips will see Smith as a DeMarcus Ware type of player and that could sell him to make Smith the pick right here.

I think Smith is an excellent pass rusher and is going to be a star at the next level. This is a great first pick for the Texans as they transition to a new defense.

12. Minnesota Vikings: DE Ryan Kerrigan, Purdue-

This is a little high for Kerrigan can help fill the Vikings biggest need, which is replacing DE Ray Edwards. Minnesota won’t be able to address the quarterback position here, so they should focus on drafting something they can fix, and that is their defensive end spot. Kerrigan, should do quite well with his hand in the ground, and be a great compliment to Jared Allen. This is a spot that Bowers could go, but Minnesota might be wise to hesitate given his injury history.

13. Detroit Lions: OT Anthony Castonzo, Boston College-

I know corner and linebacker are need spots, but they aren’t anything compared to Detroit’s need at left tackle. What the Lions have done in terms of protecting (or not protecting) Matt Stafford is flat out insane. You spend $60 million on a guy and you put him in a situation where he can’t succeed and needs to run for his life. The Lions have to fix that this offseason and grabbing Castonzo would be a smart move. In addition to the pain the offensive line has caused their quarterbacks, the Lions running game hasn’t fared much better. Their backs have one of the worst yards per carry in the league, and can never pick up the tough yards. I know defense wins championships, but Castonzo is an instant starter and can protect Stafford for the next decade. The Lions could look to trade back with Smith off the board, but even if they are slightly reaching for him I don’t see how they can afford to not beef up their pass protection.

I get a number of comments/emails talking about why the Lions need to focus on the back 7 of their defense, and it is a valid concern. I just don’t think it is one that needs to be addressed in the first round. There isn’t a single 4-3 linebacker that makes sense to take at this point of the draft, and the only CB’s worth taking in the top 15 picks are off the board here. I know that the Lions line was among the better units in sacks allowed, but it is far from an elite group. As for Jeff Backus, while he had a good year last year, he gave up 44 sacks in the previous 4 years, so I don’t know how sustainable his success will be.  By moving him over to the right side, you take advantage of his strengths and you limit his weaknesses, making this a win-win scenario. After locking up their line the Lions should focus on LB’s and CB’s.

14. St. Louis Rams: WR Julio Jones, Alabama-

The Rams need to walk away from this draft with a frontline receiver, which means they need to address this position in the first round. Now I’m not conceding my personal rankings in terms of who should go first between Julio Jones and Jon Baldwin, but I think it is time to concede the fact that Jones will go first. I think teams will fall in love with his incredible combine numbers, and slightly overdraft Jones. It’s not that I am anit-Jones, its just that I worry about how refined he is. That being said, he will be a major upgrade for the Rams and they will be thrilled to land him with this pick. If they feel he could get drafted earlier, don’t be surprised if St. Louis looks to move up a couple of spots to secure his services.

15. Miami Dolphins: QB Jake Locker, Washington-

I don’t think Jake Locker is a top 15 player and in fact I think he is a borderline top 50 player, but it looks like someone is going to overdraft him come Thursday. I have a feeling that team might be the Miami Dolphins, as Chad Henne has drawn the ire of much of that fan base. Miami might hope they can trade back and acquire him, but with some other prospective suitors potentially creeping up, I think they might pull the trigger here. I consider this a big mistake for Miami, but one that they very well could make.

16. Jacksonville Jaguars: DE De’Quan Bowers, Clemson:

This is a pretty far drop for Bowers and frankly I’d be surprised if he fell this far. But will so many teams above them that either don’t need him or run the 3-4, there is a chance he will be there for the Jags. Bowers is a special talent, one that is far better than the 16th player in this draft (even with the injury concerns). The Jaguars will be quite happy to add Bowers to their emerging defensive line.
