Risers and Fallers Of Senior Bowl Week:

January 26, 2012 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

Below are players I feel are rising & falling during the 2012 Senior Bowl Week.

RISERS:

QB Brandon Weeden:

Weeden has established himself as the best QB here, and probably risen above Nick Foles on a number of Draft boards.

RB Doug Martin:

Martin looks like the most complete back here, he definitely looks like a starter at the next level and should be firmly in the 3rd round range.

RB Vic Ballard:

Ballard has had a strong week as well, and probably moved into the 4th round area.

WR Juron Criner:

Criner was an afterthought among a number of scouts, so his brilliant showing this week has boosted his stock a bit.

WR Marvin McNutt:

McNutt has been a nice physical receiver on the North squad. I think he’s moved ahead of some other receivers here.

WR Brian Quick:

Quick has been another receiver who really opened some eyes this week. His potential is really high and he could even get some 2nd round consideration.

DE Melvin Ingram:

Ingram’s stock was already rising, but he’s been the most dominant player here this week and could be the first pass rusher off the board.

DE Quinton Coples:

There were some questions about Coples’ work ethic this year, but he’s shown a lot of effort (and some great performances) this week.

OT Mike Adams:

Adams has really vaulted himself firmly into the 1st round, and could even be a top 20 pick now.

SS George Illoka:

Illoka has had a real nice week of practice, and has displayed good speed and excellent size. In a weak safety class he should be off the board no later than the 3rd round.

RB/WR Chris Rainey:

Rainey has lined up all over the field for the South and has impressed at every spot.

FALLERS:

CB Alfonzo Dennard:

Dennard really struggled the first two practices, and his straight lined speed is in doubt. Now after a strong 3rd day, he got injured and has to pull out from the rest of the week.

C Ben Jones:

Jones was getting some 2nd round love before this week, but his lack of an anchor is a bit concerning. He’s still got some overall talent, but I think he’s fallen 30-40 picks.

WR Jeff Fuller:

After a strong first day of practice, Fuller has struggled catching the ball. He shows a nice size/speed combo, but if you can’t catch the ball you can’t be a receiver in the NFL.

WR DeVier Posey:

Posey shows nice quickness and separation skills, but he is catching way too many of his passes against his body. His hands are a bit in question right now and he has to have a strong end of the week to make up for loss ground.

RB Chris Polk:

Polk hasn’t been horrible, but for a guy who was considered a 2nd rounder, he hasn’t distinguished himself at all either.

QB Nick Foles:

Foles came into the Senior Bowl with a chance to become the 3rd QB selected in April’s draft. Now unfortunately he hasn’t progressed and looks to be more of a late 3rd rounder at best.

QB Kellen Moore:

Moore came in undersized and out of shape. While he’s fairly accurate, he is slow at finding open recievers and doesn’t have the arm strength to zip the ball in those tight windows.

2012 Senior Bowl: South Team Practice: Wednesday

January 25, 2012 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

Be sure to check out Steve’s other 2012 NFL Draft Coverage with his: Latest Mock DraftSenior Bowl CoverageDraft Blog, and Draft Page.

Quick Updates from Wednesday South Practice:

-QB Brandon Weeden, Oklahoma State: Weeden continued to separate himself from the other South quarterbacks. He’s not perfect out there, but his instincts appear to be the best. I also get the sense that he has the best internal clock of getting rid of the ball.

-QB Nick Foles, Arizona: I thought Foles was better today, but still not as good as Monday’s practice. He threw behind receivers on a couple of occasions and continues to struggle at throwing to a spot as opposed to an open receiver.

-QB Ryan Lindley, San Diego State: Lindley’s cannon is unquestionable, but at times it seems like his nickname should be ‘Wild Thing’. The ball sails a lot on him.

-WR Jeff Fuller, Texas A&M: Fuller didn’t have as strong of a practice as I hoped, but he makes up for his drops with some big catches later in practice. Consistency is a slight concern, but Fuller’s size and strength are impressive.

-WR Juron Criner, Arizona: The lack of that extra gear is noticeable at times, but he catches the ball cleanly and presents a big target for his quarterback.

-WR Joe Adams, Arkansas: Adams is lightening fast and changes direction really well. He ran some nice crisp routes I thought, and had a strong practice overall.

-RB Vic Ballard, Miss. State: Ballard showcases a real nice burst and hits the hole hard. He’s always keeping his legs churning. I was really impressed with his form in blitz pick-up drills. He stonewalled a number of top LB’s.

-RB Terrance Ganaway, Baylor: Runs really well, but was completely lost in blitz pick-up. He did everything wrong, lunged, lowered his head, didn’t set his feet, etc.

-C Ben Jones, Georgia: Jones is really struggling at both guard and center, not impressed with his anchor at all. He was allowing pressure in under 2 seconds at times. He also missed an assignment badly in team drills.

-T/G Jeff Allen, Illinois: Allen looked really good today, especially when asked to play inside. He could still be a RT long term, but versatility is huge for his draft status. He finished a number of blocks and pancaked Coples at one point.

-T Matt McCants, UAB: McCants gets better with every practice, but he still loses too many battles to the South’s pass rushers.

-DE Melvin Ingram, South Carolina: His quickness off the snap is apparent on every play, and it really causes a number of linemen to struggle to contain him.

-DE Malik Jackson, Tennessee: Jackson was a late add, but he is making the most of his opportunity. He generated a number of pressures today, and looked nearly as good as the ‘big 3′ at the defensive end position. Also showed a real good work ethic and was complimented at least once by the D-line coach.

I’ll be back with more updates later tonight!

2012 Senior Bowl: South Practice-Full Report

January 25, 2012 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

Be sure to check out Steve’s other 2012 NFL Draft Coverage with his: Latest Mock DraftSenior Bowl CoverageDraft Blog, and Draft Page.

FULL thoughts from today’s Senior Bowl South Practice:

QUARTERBACKS:

Brandon Weeden, Ok. State:

Weeden is really separating himself from the rest of the quarterbacks down in Mobile. In addition to showing good velocity and accuracy with his throws, he stands out due to his maturity as well. He appears to be communicating the best with his receivers and backs, making sure they lineup properly and acknowledging them when they make great catches. Just really looks to be a leader on the field.

Nick Foles, Arizona:

Foles took a step back today overall. He shows a strong deep ball, but his accuracy was off today and many of his passes sailed out of bounds. Overall I thought his footwork was really solid today, but his release was slow today and not very impressive. While his slower delivery might not be as much of a problem in practice where the defensive linemen, aren’t supposed to hit the QB, it won’t fly in the NFL. Foles needs to rebound the rest of the week to be considered a top 5 QB option.

Ryan Lindley, San Diego State:

Lindley is just too inaccurate and inconsistent at this point. Today he’d make one perfect throw and then miss on the next two or three (badly) which were much easier throws to make. Really seemed to struggle on timing routes, and waited too long for his receiver to come open.

RUNNINGBACKS:

Chris Rainey, Florida:

Now Rainey deserves mention at both RB and WR as he split time at both positions (as well as being a returner). He showed excellent speed and really nice catching ability. His burst is really nice and he looks like he has the ability to make players miss.

Vick Ballard, Miss. State:

Ballard ran really strong today, he showed nice burst through the hole, and really finished runs. He didn’t look as comfortable catching the ball, but does look like he can be a nice back at the next level.

Terrance Ganaway, Baylor:

Ganaway caught a couple of nice balls out of the backfield early, before dropping an easy one later. He showed nice burst and vision on running plays, but really excelled in the power department. Dropped his head once on a blocking assignment and got run over, but overall decent in the area.

WIDE RECEIVERS:

Juron Criner, Arizona:

Criner just had a fantastic day. He caught everything thrown his way including multiple highlight reel catches. He got better separation in the 1-on-1 and team drills than i expected and really turned some heads today. Might not run the fastest 40 time, but has nice football speed.

Jeff Fuller, Texas A&M:

Fuller made two really nice catches on the first two throws he saw, and it looked like he was going to build on his impressive first day, but after that he went down hill. Fuller had a couple of bad drops through out the practice and while he made a few nice catches, it wasn’t a great all-around day. I still like Fuller overall, but in a really strong receiver class a bad day like that will drop you a little bit.

Patrick Edwards, Houston:

Edwards really struggled yesterday, but rebounded with a nice all-around practice. He looked real clean in getting out of his breaks and did a better job of catching the ball away from his body.

Dwight Jones, UNC:

Jones really had a strong day, both in catching the ball and in his clean route running. He looks to have good speed and is taking advantage of his opportunity here.

OFFENSIVE LINEMAN:

OT Matt McCants, UAB:

McCants still didn’t have a great day, but he looked light years better than yesterday. It’s important to remember that McCants is consistently going up against top 15 talents, Quinton Coples, Melvin Ingram, and Courtney Upshaw. So an average day against them is still pretty impressive. I saw greatly improved footwork by McCants, but his rawness is still apparent.

OT Zebrie Sanders, FSU:

Sanders was another lineman who improved today. He still struggles to anchor consistently, especially against the top rushers. Seems more comfortable on run blocking plays, and flashes enough to say that he could start early (on the right side), but I want to see more strength in his game.

OT Jeff Allen, Illinois:

Allen improved today and showed nice footwork and a decent anchor. He’s not an elite prospect, but does look like an eventual starter at the next level.

T/G Cordy Glenn, Georgia:

Glenn worked at both guard and tackle again today, and really continued to show that he is the best lineman on the South squad. His long term position will probably be on the inside (where he just dominates), but he really held his own at tackle against some great competition.

C Phillp Blake, Baylor:

Blake had a good day today, and an improvement from yesterday’s solid performance. He anchored well, and showed nice footwork. Overall i think he’s been the most consistent (maybe not the best) interior line prospect on the South squad (if you are counting Glenn as a tackle).

C Ben Jones, Georgia:

Didn’t get to key in on Jones as much today, and while I’d say it was better, it was still a disappointing performance from what I saw. Gives up too much ground in the middle and just looks overwhelmed at times.

DEFENSIVE BACKS:

CB: Casey Hayward, Vanderbilt:

Hayward really seems to be taking to the Redskins coaching staff extremely well. Displays a lot of leadership out there on the field helping teammates get into the right position and talking to them inbetween plays about what they need to work on. While there is a general concern about his deep speed, he never really got ‘beat’ throughout the day. Hayward also showed a good bit of physicality today, which helped him cover some of the bigger receivers. If I’m a betting man, I’d say that if Raheem Morris has any influence in the draft Hayward will be a Redskin come next April (probably with the 3rd round pick).

CB: Dwight Bentley, Louisiana-Lafayette:

Bentley is one of the most impressive players on either squad. Not necessarily because he’s going to be an early round draft pick, but rather because he always seems to be making plays. Bentley had another strong practice and should really be moving up draft boards with his performance this week. He doesn’t let the big receivers on the South squad bother him, and really forces them to work at it.

CB: Brandon Boykin, Georgia:

Despite being on the small side Boykin has no problem mixing it up with the bigger receivers on the South Squad. I really like Boykin’s energy and the way he works with coaches. He might never be a top level starting CB, but should be able to work the slot.

S Markelle Martin, Oklahoma State:

Martin really shows advanced instincts and ball skills. I like the angles that he takes to the ball carrier, and in coverage he breaks on the ball pretty cleanly.

S Brandon Taylor, LSU:

Not quick on reacting to the pass, which allowed for some big catches underneath. Does better in more of a man role. Really excels in the run game though.

S Antonio Allen, South Carolina:

Really up and down day. Missed a couple of coverage assignments early, but he rebounded as practice wore on. Made some nice plays and really took to the Redskins coaching staff with some of the tips they were giving.

DEFENSIVE LINE:

DT Jaye Howard, Florida:

Howard is having an impressive week so far, showing a lot of penetration and push up the middle. Will be interested to see how he works coming off the end in a 3-4 scheme, but definitely looks like he can handle the 3-tech.

DE Melvin Ingram, South Carolina:

Ingram didn’t have as great of a day as yesterday, but still looked like a top 15 pick (which shows just how amazing he was yesterday). Ingram is just tenacious in his pursuit of the quarterback, and will find a place to play in the NFL regardless of his size.

DE Quinton Coples, North Carolina:

Really impressive coming off the edge. Has answered any questions about his motor in my book. Gave offensive linemen fits all day.

DE Courtney Upshaw, Alabama:

Continues to be a relentless pass rusher. Really strong at the point of a attack, though best when rushing from a 2 point stance. Uses his hands well, and counter’s linemen pretty easily.

Senior Bowl South Practice Day Two: Quick Thoughts

January 24, 2012 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

Be sure to check out Steve’s other 2012 NFL Draft Coverage with his: Latest Mock DraftSenior Bowl CoverageDraft Blog, and Draft Page.

Quick Thoughts on Tuesday South Practice:

-Brandon Weeden is looking the best out of all the quarterbacks. Hitting a lot of receivers in stride or on target. He’s shown good accuracy overall and looks completely ready to play at the next level.

-Foles I thought regressed a little bit today. Off the mark on a number of deep balls. Showed good arm strength but not sharp. He took too long to get the ball out at times and didn’t look as good as he did yesterday.

-Chris Rainey was working with both running backs and receivers and looked good. He’s small overall, but he’s still playable, and could be a very nice utility player at the next level.

-Juron Criner showed tremendous hands today, making a number of impressive catches. He got better separation than you’d expect also.

-Jeff Fuller was the best all-around receiver, but he did drop a couple.

-Zebrie Sanders looked better today, as did the whole line in general. Sanders definitely showed enough to think that he can at least start on the right side in the NFL.

-Melvin Ingram continued to impress. Ingram, Quinton Coples and Courtney Upshaw continuously brought heat today.

-Sean Spence is pretty small for a LB, but he plays the game really well. He closes fast and can get off blocks. In the right scheme he could be a valuable starter.

-Casey Hayward was impressive throughout the day, flipped his hips well when asked to turn and run. Also showed a lot of properties of being a leader at Cornerback.

-Antonio Allen struggled some today, but he displayed some nice physicality. I also liked after one particularly bad play, he came back the next play and corrected his mistakes.

I’ll check in again later with more coverage from both practices.

Senior Bowl Day Two: North Practice Quick Thoughts

January 24, 2012 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

Be sure to check out Steve’s other 2012 NFL Draft Coverage with his: Latest Mock Draft, Senior Bowl Coverage, Draft Blog, and Draft Page.

We are in between practices down here in Mobile, so I wanted to share some thoughts from this morning’s North Practice:

Quarterbacks:

-Overall I’d say there is a pretty noticeable difference between the North and South QB’s (and not just the height differential). Among the North QB’s Kirk Cousins looked the best today, but didn’t wow you in any one area. Russell Wilson had some nice throws, but wasn’t as impressive in full team drills. Kellen Moore can be very accurate, but very little zip on any of his throws. He also had some center exchange problems, which is worth noting.

Running backs:

-Really liked what I saw out of Doug Martin today, excellent burst and long speed. Showed some nice vision and cutting ability as well.

-Isaiah Pead ran well also, had some real nice cuts and cut backs, and ran strong.

- Dan Herron looked pretty strong running the ball as well. Not the fastest back, but fights for every yard.

Tight Ends:

-Michael Egnew is really the only top level TE in this group. Was really interested to see his blocking and I was pretty impressed. Drove LaVonte David out of the rushing play on a couple snaps.

Offensive Line:

-First Look at Mike Adams and I was impressed. He really controls the line of scrimmage and is dictating the path of the defender. He does well against both speed and power rushes.

-Michael Brewster isn’t the biggest lineman, but he looked good overall. There were some snap issues (which some of which is accounted for by familiarity) with all the centers, but I thought Brewster had some really clean snaps.

-Senio Kelemete from Washington I thought had a strong practice as well. Didn’t get to watch him as much as I’d like, but what I saw I was impressed with.

Wide Receivers:

-Brian Quick was really impressive today, just a fantastic athlete. He shows great strength in muscling for the ball. He needs to get cleaner breaks and sometimes has an extra step in there, but overall I thought he showed the speed and size to develop into a number 1 down the road.

-Marvin McNutt was also impressive, showed deceptive speed and separation (though needs to be more consistent in this area). Caught the ball well overall, though there was one or two other balls that were contested that I would have liked to have seen him come down with. Overall good day, but could have been great.

-Marvin Jones from Cal has really nice deep speed, gained separation on a number of times, but would have to slow down for the ball.

-DeVier Posey was disappointing today, never seemed to catch the ball cleanly with his hands. It would either be a double catch, or a body catch. Showed nice quickness and cutting ability, but couldn’t finish plays.

-Gerell Robinson might be overshadowed here, but he’s a nice raw talent. He’s a tick above the top guys, but he’s got nice hands and decent speed. It’s not long speed, but it should play at the NFL level. He’s very physical with DB’s as well.

-TJ Graham shows really nice speed, clean routes and good hands. Needs a bit more consistency, but nice mid-round promise for a slot receiver.

Defensive Line:

-Mike Martin is just a force inside. He has a great base, gets of the snap quickly and plays low. He seems to get leverage on every single play, and allows his strength to really speak for him. He still needs to do better against the pass in countering and disengaging, but looks really good so far.

-Kendall Reyes from UConn is looking good and beating the O-line on a number of snaps.

-Cam Johnson from UVA looked really quick in the positional drills, I would have liked to have seen more in the team drills, but he showed some promise.

-Vinny Curry flashes some nice ability to get after the QB. Not dominant as some of the South pass rushers, but the talent is there.

Linebackers:

-Audie Cole looks very impressive, he uses his size well to fight of block and pursue the ball carrier.

-LaVonte David looks like he needs to be in a Tampa 2 system, looked small out there and got easily engulfed when going up against Egnew.

Cornerbacks:

-Alfonzo Dennard really struggled today when asked to run with the WR’s or in pursuit. He plays with good positioning and does better in zone, but he’s hurt himself so far this week. Not fluid when asked to turn his hips, and that was pretty clear in the positional drills.

-Leonard Johnson plays the ball really well, and he looked really fluid in the positional drills. Really played the bigger receivers well despite giving up 5-7 inches.

-Donnie Fletcher flipped his hips okay, it wasn’t great, but not a major concern either. Did well in coverage also, was physical against the bigger receivers.

-Asa Jackson has a lot of potential, but shows a good bit of rawness. He’s fast though, and quick at changing direction.

Safeties:

-George Illoka is big, and he runs like a horse. Wraps up well, and has nice lines of pursuit. He broke on one ball in the scrimmage and had a really nice INT. Not the cleanest in coverage, but shows enough to think that he can start.

-Harrison Smith from Notre Dame has really impressed me. I thought he’d be stiffer, but looked fluid for a big guy. He has great size and athletic ability and seems faster than you’d expect.

Senior Bowl South Team: Monday Practice Report

January 24, 2012 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

Be sure to check out Steve’s other 2012 NFL Draft Coverage with his: Latest Mock Draft, Senior Bowl Coverage, Draft Blog, and Draft Page.

SOUTH Report Monday Practice:

 55     Acho, Emmanuel     LB     Texas

-showed good closing speed on a couple of  plays. Nice recognition as well.

4     Adams, Joe     WR      Arkansas

-Really good speed, looks to be under 4.4

26    Allen, Antonio     DB     South Carolina

-came up in run support on a couple of plays took good angles to the ball carrier. Not great in man coverage, but held his own.

72     Allen, Jeff     OL     Illinois

-Looks good out there, but footwork a problem sometimes. Gets too wide of a base. When Allen shows good footwork and balance he’s good, the problem is he isn’t consistent in this area.

28     Ballard, Vick     RB     Mississippi State

-Ran well, would like to see him catch the ball more cleanly, but not a major concern.

5     Bentley, Dwight     DB     Louisiana-Lafayette

-despite being one of the smaller players here, he showed that he had no problem getting physical with bigger receivers and staying with them. Really impressed me with how tight his coverage was on a few plays.

91     Bequette, Jake     LB     Arkansas

Is standing up at LB, could get some interesting looks in a 3-4 alignment.

61     Blackwell, Will     OL     LSU

-Got beat bad on a couple of plays, recovered well later in practice, but he doesn’t look nearly consistent enough.

74     Blake, Philip     OL     Baylor

-Did struggle at times, but also anchored well in some one-on-one’s. Good hand placement overall, need to get set quicker as defenders get into his body quickly.

2     Boykin, Brandon     DB     Georgia

-Fast, looks like he can run with everyone. Dealing with some bigger receivers a bit of a problem, but showed nice ball skills overall.

13     Bradham, Nigel     LB      Florida St.

-very good football speed, he seemed to be around the ball on every play that he was in there.

40     Branch, Andre     DL     Clemson

-Not in attendance, not sure what the issue is, wasn’t there for day 1 practice.

70     Brown, James     OL     Troy

-Really struggled on the edge. Just didn’t have the quickness to set the edge, and was getting overpowered. Did better on some snaps while in the interior, but still not a great day.

47     Brown, Zach     LB     North Carolina

-Another fast linebacker, showed good instincts day one.

29     Bullock, Randy     PK     Texas A&M

-Was booming kicks right down the middle

13     Butler, Drew     P     Georgia

-Nice hangtime and distance on a number of punts

90     Coples, Quinton     DL     North Carolina

-Impressive, simply unblockable at times. He had some really good battles with Cordy Glenn and he won more than his fair share. Even when he was contained, he continued to fight and push the pocket.

82     Criner, Juron     WR     Arizona

-Looked really clean getting in and out of his breaks. Showed good hands.

30     Diehl, Chad     RB     Clemson

-caught the ball well a couple of times, nice blocking as well.

83     Edwards, Patrick     WR     Houston

-very fast in and out of his breaks, dropped a couple balls though

8     Foles, Nick     QB     Arizona

-Really impressive practice. Threw the ball cleanly. Looked good taking the ball from center, and in his various drops. Went through his reads quickly, showed a good ability to buy time vs a tough pass rush, and usually hit the receiver in stride or on the numbers.

87     Fuller, Jeff     WR     Texas A&M

-Adjusted to the ball really well, got nice separation on a couple of passes. Good speed for a bigger receiver.

24     Ganaway, Terrance     RB     Baylor

-Runs strong, always keeps the legs moving. Showed good burst though the hole as well. Not great deep speed, but doesn’t lose much speed when changing directions.

71     Glenn, Cordy     OL     Georgia

-Glenn struggled early on in practice against some of the top pass rushers, but really came on as practice wore on. Was pretty easily the best OL on the south squad. Plays with good leverage and power.

32     Gray, Cyrus     RB     Texas A&M

-Looked like he ran well early, but had to pull out of the SB due to failing a physical.

89     Green, Ladarius     TE     Louisiana-Lafayette

-Impressive athlete and can really catch the ball. Didn’t look as good in run blocking though.

62     Harris, Josh     DS     Auburn

-

19     Hayward, Casey     DB     Vanderbilt

-Had better speed than I thought, ran well with WR’s

96     Howard, Jaye     DL    Florida

-Better power than I expected in the middle of the line. Really can push the pocket. Need to show better counter moves to disengage to get after the ball carrier. High motor guy.

6     Ingram, Melvin     DL     South Carolina

-Easily the best player on the field (and that is saying somthing), Non-stop motor guy, Absolutely relentless at getting after the passer. Really didn’t see him get cleanly blocked all practice. At times he might not have gotten to the QB, but it was only after deep penetration, which would probably at least be a pressure in an NFL game. Displayed great power and speed, and just was simply dominant.

1     Jenkins, Janoris     DB     North Alabama

-Ran well with the WR’s, showed good ball skills and decent instincts.

94     Jerod-Eddie, Tony     DL     Texas A&M

-A late add, but making the most of his opportunity. Worked a lot on the outside, and should get some 3-4 end looks. Showed good strength and power and won a number of battles.

60     Jones, Ben     OL     Georgia

-Struggled some through out the day. Really couldn’t handle power rushes without giving up 4-6 yards. He continued to battle well, but not impressive for a guy considered to be a top 75 pick.

85     Jones, Dwight     WR     North Carolina

-Got some nice clean releases, you can tell he’s used to a pro style offense. Really nice route runner, and stayed in control.

17     Lindley, Ryan     QB     San Diego St.

-Lindley has a serious cannon for an arm, and even short passes can dial up the RPM’s to fit it in a tight window. Consistency an issue though as some of this throws are well off the mark. Good size and decent mobility (though below Foles and Weeden).

10     Martin, Markelle     DB     Oklahoma St.

-Really good instincts and help in the run game. Showed a lot in box today.

1     Maze, Marquis     WR     Alabama

-Nice speed and hands, size still an issue though lost some physical battles with CB’s

76     McCants, Matt     OL     UAB

-Def. looks the part, but he was exposed today. He just couldn’t handle the top pass rushers here, and would try to overcompensate (which didn’t work too well). Caught guessing too often and overmatched. Did better in team drills, but def. a work in progress. Footwork was really sloppy and needs to be tightened up.

24     Menzie, DeQuan     DB     Alabama

-Solid day, ran well with WR’s

19     Peterson, Deangelo     TE     LSU

-Caught the ball cleanly, showed nice speed, needs to be a stronger blocker.

92     Powell, Tydreke     DL     North Carolina

-Showed nice power, despite not high expectations. Even gave Ben Jones trouble on a number of plays. Needs to get quicker off the snap and counter better, but nice first day.

2     Rainey, Chris     RB     Florida

-FAST, showed great burst all day.Played bigger than he is. Not an every down back, but can be a change of pace guy.

93     Randall, Kheeston     DL     Texas

-Displayed good power, gave the interior line fits on a number of plays. Needs more consistency, but nice first day.

51     Robinson, Keenan     LB     Texas

-Looked the part, good all-around day, though didn’t stand out in any one area.

77     Sanders, Zebrie     OL     Florida St.

-Looks like an NFL LT, but he did struggle for much of day against the speed of the pass rush. Looked better in the full scrimmage and run blocking.

44     Smelley, Brad     TE     Alabama

-

31     Spence, Sean    LB     Miami

-

4     Street, Ryan     DB     Furman

-Surprisingly physical, nice first day

18     Taylor, Brandon     DB     LSU

98     Thompson, Brandon     DL     Clemson

-very Powerful, really tough to block 1-on-1, definitely a force in the middle of a defense.

41     Upshaw, Courtney     DL     Alabama

-Very impressive day, unblockable for much of the practice, especially on the pass rush plays.

Vlachos, William     OL     Alabama

3     Weeden, Brandon     QB     Oklahoma St.

-Weeden had a really good first day, looked better from under center and in the various drops. Spun the ball cleanly with really nice touch on a number of passes. Avoided the rush well and looked nice on a couple of rollouts.
