28 OT CYRUS KOUANDJIO            CYRUS KOUANDJIO

60 G GABE JACKSON

MISSISSIPPI STATE

92 WR DONTE MONCRIEF

MISSISSIPPI

124 CB BASHAUD BREELAND

CLEMSON

156 DT DEANDRE COLEMAN

CALIFORNIA

188 CB ANDRE HAL

VANDERBILT

202 DE ETHAN WESTBROOKS

WEST TEXAS A&M

Why I like it:

The Panthers really need to upgrade three main areas, offensive line, wide receiver and the defensive backfield, this mock touches on all three areas and gives some really nice fixes who should play early on. Kouandjio is a realistic option for the Panthers at the bottom of the 1st round and he’d be an immediate upgrade at RT. In a year or two when Jordan Gross hangs them up and retires, Kouandjio can slide over to the left tackle spot. Gabe Jackson would be an immediate starter at one of the guard spots and would be a big upgrade over what the Panthers have been fielding in recent years. Though they will boost the pass protection, both Kouandjio and Jackson are excellent run blockers which is great news for one of the best rushing offenses in the NFL.

At wide receiver the Panthers land a quality 3rd round option in Moncrief. He should contribute in year one and become a full time starter by year two.

In the secondary Breeland and Hal would be a major upgrade to their corner talent. Breeland especially is a guy with a wide range of draft opinions surrounding him. In the deep corner class there is a chance he falls, and he could end up being the steal of the draft. Though not a major need adding quality DL prospects in Coleman and Westbrooks adds nice depth to the unit. This is a draft that could have an immediate impact on the Panthers and have long reaching implications as well.

Mock 2: Greg for the Kansas City Chiefs

23 S HA’SEAN CLINTON-DIX     haseanclintondix
ALABAMA

87 DE JACKSON JEFFCOAT
TEXAS

120 CB PIERRE DESIR
LINDENWOOD

151 OT JAMES HURST
UNC

177 OLB PRINCE SHEMBO
NOTRE DAME

184 WR RYAN GRANT
TULANE

Why I like it:

I really like the focus of this draft, the Chiefs went 11-5 this year due to their defense and running game and that is the continued focus of this draft. Adding Clinton-Dix to the Chiefs secondary could be almost considered unfair, and it would be a smart upgrade given the Chiefs have to overcome both Peyton Manning and Philip Rivers in their own division. Fourth rounder Pierre Desir is another quality defensive back being added though he’s probably not going to make as much of an early impact. Still the upside and potential is there and the Chiefs don’t need an immediate starter.

In the 3rd round the Chiefs grab Jackson Jeffcoat to boost their pass rush and possibly become a future replacement for Tamba Hali if he were to struggle at all in the future. Shembo is another guy with some pass rushing ability, though he also could be viewed as a sub package inside linebacker given his coverage skills.

James Hurst should have been a top 100 player and possibly a 2nd rounder, but an injury will force him to fall. That fall will be the Chiefs gain and will help the team replace their OL depth. Ryan Grant is a late round receiver, but he’s got a little potential and could be a nice pick-up here for Kansas City.

Mock 3: Eugene for the New England Patriots

93 DT EGO FERGUSON

126 QB JIMMY GAROPPOLO

EASTERN ILLINOIS

182 S KENNY LADLER

VANDERBILT

190 TE JOE DON DUNCAN

DIXIE STATE

221 CB AARON COLVIN

OKLAHOMA

Why I like it:

This draft is probably atypical from what you see from most Patriots sites or fans as it doesn’t get too hung up with particular positions. That isn’t to say that this mock doesn’t address real needs, just that it does so smartly. Yankey in the first is a good pick-up for the Patriots as they continue to ensure a strong OL for Tom Brady and their running game. He’s an immediate upgrade over Dan Connolly, and with Logan Mankins looking at maybe 2-3 more good years, Yankey could take over as the center piece of the interior OL.

If the Patriots let Aqib Talib walk then Fuller makes some sense. While it seems like they are always investing picks in their secondary, it’s a pretty big need for them. New England’s offense is going to force a lot of teams to try to throw the ball to win, so the defense has to be ready. It’s also why Aaron Colvin late in the draft makes so much sense to continue to stockpile that secondary. Ferguson in the 3rd round helps boost the interior DL which is a major need. Another really smart pick-up is Garoppolo in the 4th (which is right around where he should go). Ryan Mallett is in his final year under contract so a new Tom Brady protege is needed. Garoppolo is a good fit for New England and is a guy who given 3 years could develop into a good starter. Joe Don Duncan is a late round tight end, but he’s got some nice sleeper potential.
