Mock Drafts NFL Draft

With the Redskins coaching staff running the South team down in Mobile this week, I wanted to take a look at what the Redskins draft would look like if they only took players off their South roster.

Now to be clear this post is for fun and not realistic, but does take into account some level of need and guys who should have impressed Mike Shanahan this week. Also, I am taking into account relative draft value, so keep that in mind. I’ll do the 9 picks the Redskins have and add a 10th player who would be taken as a UDFA.

1st round – DE Melvin Ingram:

I know, I know the outrage, I didn’t take a QB, WR, OT or CB with this pick. Well simply put no one on the South team is close to deserving the 6th overall pick at any of those positions. Cordy Glenn could be the closest, but it is hard to pass up Ingram. It’s not the Redskins biggest need, but Ingram is a dynamic pass rusher who has dominated all week. He’s not your typical 3-4 DE, and should be moved around a lot to maximize his value, but he’s simply a play maker.

2nd round – QB Brandon Weeden:

Weeden’s play this week should have easily moved him into the 2nd round consideration. Sure he’s older, but he really has had a nice week and has the skills that allow you to think that he can be a top 10 QB in this league (albeit for a shorter window). The Redskins would be wise to pick him up, and fix their QB woes.

3rd round – S Markelle Martin:

Martin could be the Redskins answer to LaRon Landry’s likely departure. He profiles more as a free safety, but given how much this has become a passing league, and how athletic TE’s and RB’s are a strong safety needs to be able to cover first and foremost. Martin also has shown good reads on the ball, and takes nice angles to the ball carrier, this week and I think he’d be a good fit for the Skins secondary.

4th round – CB Casey Hayward:

Some reports have been negative on Hayward, but I’ll tell you what I’ve come away highly impressed. He’s a vocal leader both on the field and on the sideline, which is a big plus. He’s shown a good amount of hustle and seems to be a favorite of new Redskins secondary coach Raheem Morris. If Hayward has lasted this long (which I don’t think should be a given), his slide will fall here.

4th round – OT/G Jeff Allen:

Allen was a last minute addition to the roster, but I really think he’s had a nice week. He’s shown good versatility by playing inside and has been okay at tackle as well (against some very high level pass rushers). He is not necessarily the ‘answer’ for the Redskins RT woes, but he has some nice upside.

5th round – WR Juron Criner:

Criner has had a really nice week catching basically every ball thrown in his direction. He’s got nice size and huge hands, that helps make up for his lack of deep speed. Nice high upside receiver for the Skins.

6th round – CB Dwight Bentley:

Bentley is a small school product, who has had a really nice week. He’s shown good ball skills and an ability to get physical with these bigger Southern receivers.

6th round – WR Jeff Fuller:

Fuller has struggled some this week with catching the ball, but he has the size and strength that NFL teams love. While his stock is falling, he’d still be a nice fit and value here.

7th round – T/G James Brown:

Brown at times looks over-matched here, but he also shows some natural strength and athleticism. Given the Redskins lack of NFL quality linemen, this would be nice pick for them.

UDFA – RB Lennon Creer:

Creer was an injury replacement this week, but he’s made the most of his chance here. He runs strong and shows some nice burst to get the edge. He’s a bit of a bigger back and could give Washington some more power to their backfield.

So what do you think about the Redskins South team Mock Draft?
