By Contributing Writer Willypops:

1. Indianapolis Colts- QB Andrew Luck, Stanford:

Luck is a lock for #1 spot.

Unless some team wows them with an offer Luck will be Indy’s pick. Even if he has to sit a year or two behind Peyton Manning, it will be a smart choice as the Colts ensure their future.

2. St. Louis Rams- OT Matt Kalil, USC:

Some might prefer a WR or a CB here, but the fact of the matter is it won’t matter what talent the Rams have until they can protect their QB. Kalil’s probably the best tackle to come out since Jake Long, and is a great fit for St. Louis.

3. Minnesota Vikings- WR Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma State:

The Vikings need a lineman, but will surely take the consolation prize of an elite playmaker. A Blackmon-Harvin receiving pairing could be quite dangerous and give Christian Ponder the weapons he needs.

4. Cleveland Browns- QB Robert Griffin, Baylor:

The Browns need to strongly consider upgrading from Colt McCoy here. If Griffin enters the draft I think this is a good pick for Cleveland if he’s still on the board.

5. Jacksonville Jaguars- WR Alshon Jeffery, South Carolina:

Some would consider this a reach, but the Jags have never let that stop them before. The fact is they need a big play WR, and Jeffery fits that bill. He didn’t have a great year at SC, but part of that is due to the poor QB play.

6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- CB Morris Claiborne, LSU

The Bucs have a serious need at CB, which will only get worse when Barber retires. Claiborne is an elite corner and could be even better than Patrick Peterson. They could consider Trent Richardson, but if Claiborne or Kirkpatrick are there they’d probably go CB.

7. Washington Redskins- OT Jonathan Martin, Stanford:

Trent Williams’ recent suspension, is reason 10,472 why the Redskins need to invest in their offensive line. Williams is one more failed test away from a year long ban, and he’d be probably better suited for RT duty anyways, as Martin can take over at LT.

8. Carolina Panthers- CB Dre Kirkpatrick, Alabama:

The Panthers need to add some more talent on defense, and landing a big play physical corner like Kirkpatrick would be huge.

9. Miami Dolphins- OT Riley Rieff, Iowa

The Dolphins already have one stud tackle, and could add a bookend here with Rieff. With no quarterbacks on the board, the Dolphins mine as well add as much protection as possible for their new signal caller.

10. Buffalo Bills- OLB Quinton Coples, UNC

Will Bills add a guy like Coples?

The Bills need to increase their pass rush this offseason and Coples could be the perfect fit for them. He’s on the bigger side for a rush linebacker, but I still think he has the potential to stand up.

11. Kansas City Chiefs- G David DeCastro, Stanford

The Chiefs will need to reestablish the run next year if they want to get back to the post season, and the best way for them to do that is to add some blockers for Charles. DeCastro is an absolute star at Stanford, and should make a seamless transition to Kansas City.

12. Arizona Cardinals- OT Barrett Jones, Alabama

The Cardinals are desperate for offensive tackle help. So far it is tough to get a read on Kolb given the amount of pressure that he is under, which is something Arizona needs to minimize next season.

13.  Philadelphia Eagles- LB Vontaze Burfict, Arizona State

The Eagles need to add some linebacking talent this year and Burfict would be a nice fit for them.

14. Seattle Seahawks-WR Michael Floyd, Notre Dame

The Seahawks might begin to see the Mike Williams reclamation project as a failure. Floyd is a great prospect, and he could team with his former college teammate Golden Tate, as well as Doug Baldwin to give Seattle an impressive receiving corps.

15. San Diego Chargers- CB Alonzo Dennard, Nebraska

The Chargers pass defense has been suspect this year, and Dennard is a great value pick.

16. Chicago Bears- RB Trent Richardson, Alabama

The Bears could look to franchise Matt Forte and trade him, or maybe only keep him around for one season based on the price tag. While Chicago has other needs, I could see them the team that stops Richardson’s slide.

17.Tennessee Titans-DT Devon Still, Penn State

The Titans could lose Jason Jones this offseason, and would need a replacement tackle. Still is the best defensive tackle in the draft and is a nice pick here.

18. Dallas Cowboys- C Peter Konz, Wisconsin:

The Cowboys offensive line needs some serious upgrades as they haven’t been able to run the ball effectively at all.

19. New York Jets- OLB Courtney Upshaw, Alabama

The Jets desperately need to upgrade that pass rush and should be quite pleased with Upshaw.

20. Cincinnati Bengals (via Oakland)- CB Janoris Jenkins, North Alabama:

Jenkins is moving up draft boards and looks to be a dynamic playmaker in the NFL.

21. Denver Broncos- G/T Kelechi Osemele, Iowa State

22. Cleveland Browns (via Atlanta)- RB Lamar Miller, Miami

One of the best things the Browns can do for a new QB is upgrade their ground game. Miller should do just that and help turn Cleveland’s offense into one of the league’s more exciting units.

23. New York Giants-OLB Zach Brown, UNC

The Giants could use some more additions to their linebacking corps and Brown is the best name on the board.

24. Detroit Lions- LB Luke Kuechly, Boston College:

The Lions could go offensive line or CB here, but I could see them favoring a tackling machine like Kuechly.

25. Cincinnati Bengals- DT Brandon Thompson, Clemson:

The Bengals don’t need a DT, but a guy like Thompson would be a huge boost to their defense. Him and Atkins in the middle would be a nightmare for opposing offenses.

26. Houston Texans- NT Dontari Poe, Memphis:

The Texans might consider a WR here, but should keep building up that defense with a NT like Poe.

27. New England Patriots- CB Chase Minnifield, UVA:

The Pats need to keep adding corners as that continues to be their weakness.

28. New England Patriots (from N.O.)- WR Kendall Wright, Baylor:

The Pats could use a big play receiver opposite Welker and Wright could be that guy. He’s got great deep speed and will stretch the field as the TE’s work the middle and Welker underneath.

29. Baltimore Ravens- LB Donte Hightower, Alabama:

Ray Lewis might have a year or two left, meaning his replacement should be priority 1 for the Ravens. Hightower can play next to Lewis now, and take over for him in the future.

30. San Francisco 49ers- OG Cordy Glenn, Georgia:

The 49ers need to add some talent to their interior line.

31. Pittsburgh Steelers- NT Josh Chapman, Alabama:

The Steelers can grab Casey Hampton’s replacement here and have a smooth transition in the middle.

32. Green Bay Packers- OLB Ronnell Lewis, Oklahoma:

The Packers need to find another pass rusher to go along with Matthews here, and Lewis is a great fit.

2012 NFL Mock Draft, 17-32, 12/26

December 26, 2011 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

Round 1, Picks 17-32, Round 2, Round 3, Round 4, Draft Blog, NFL Draft Page

17. Tennessee Titans- DT Brandon Thompson, Clemson

The Titans interior line is fairly soft, and could use some beefing up. The need for a DT will be even more dire if Jason Jones leaves via free agency.

18. New York Jets- OLB Courtney Upshaw, Alabama

As a team the Jets generate a good amount of sacks and pressure, but they lack that one impact rusher who needs to be accounted for on every play. Upshaw has that potential and could be used at least in a situational role as a rookie (though he probably could start).

19. Cincinnati Bengals (via Oakland)- WR Alshon Jeffery, South Carolina

Will the Bengals pair Jeffery with AJ Green?

This pick could raise some eyebrows, but adding Jeffery next to Green could make this offense simply unstoppable. And while most don’t see WR a need for the Bengals, it is important to remember that both Simpson, and Caldwell are free agents, so they could get thin real fast at the position.

20. New York Giants- C Peter Konz, Wisconsin

The Giants offense line has simply been awful this season, and needs to be addressed this offseason. Konz could be a big part of process. He looks to be a day one starter, and could be a nice player for the Giants to build around on that line.

21. Denver Broncos- OT Barrett Jones, Alabama

Barrett Jones would be the perfect bookend tackle for the Broncos, which would allow Orlando Franklin to move inside to guard a more natural position for him.

22. Dallas Cowboys- CB Janoris Jenkins, North Alabama

The Cowboys secondary has been a major issue all season, and a corner like Jenkins should offer an immediate upgrade for Dallas. He’s an electrifying playmaker when he gets his hands on the ball and should be big threat.

23. Cincinnati Bengals- CB Chase Minnifield, UVA

The Bengals need to fill the void left in their Secondary when Jonathan Joesph left via free agency. Minnifield has big time upside and should be able to start as a rookie.

24. Cleveland Browns (via Atlanta)- WR Kendall Wright, Baylor

The Browns could use a playmaker, so why not add Robert Griffin’s favorite college target. Wright is a gamebreaker and could very well here his name called in the bottom half of Round 1. In addition to a good story, this would be a great fit as he can stretch the field opposite rookie Greg Little.

25. Detroit Lions- OT Mike Adams, Ohio State

The Lions are having some serious issues with protecting Matt Stafford and that has to be their top priority this offseason. While they need help at just about every position along the offensive line, finding someone to replace LT Jeff Backus (maybe move him to G or RT), is key. Backus had a strong year last year, but it is clear he can’t be the blind side protector any longer in Detroit.

26. Houston Texans- DT Dontari Poe, Memphis

The Texans defense doesn’t have many holes, but one area they need to address is their NT position. Look for them to even trade up to ensure they land Poe.

27. Baltimore Ravens- ILB Vontaze Burfict, Arizona State

Burfict’s temper could get him to fall somewhat in this draft, but I see the Ravens not letting like his slip by. And honestly it would be a good fit, because Burfict can learn the position from a true star, Ray Lewis, who has the ability to take control of the locker room.

28. Pittsburgh Steelers- G/T Cordy Glenn, Georgia

The Steelers blocking has been pretty bad this year, and they should once again look to add a high pick to their line. Glenn isn’t a great fit at tackle, esp. LT, but in a power offense like the Steelers he might be able to handle it.

29. New England Patriots (via New Orleans)- DT Jerel Worthy, Michigan State

The Patriots need to fix this defense ASAP, and Worthy would be great start. He’s a major presence in the middle and can give New England a great complement to Vince Wilfork.

30. San Francisco 49ers- G Kelechi Osemele, Iowa State

The 49ers don’t have a lot of weaknesses, but their biggest one is along their offensive line. Osemele could either play guard or if Anthony Davis doesn’t improve, he could become the RT.

31. New England Patriots- DE Nick Perry, USC

This might be slightly high for Perry, but I can see the Patriots going after him. They need pass rushers, and Perry has one of highest ceilings.

32. Green Bay Packers- OLB Whitney Mercilus, Illinois

The Packers defense has fallen off somewhat this year, in part because Clay Matthews isn’t as effective this year. A big part of that reason is he’s basically doing it himself when it comes to consistently getting after the QB. Mercilus could be a great addition to their defense and give them another pass rusher.

2012 NFL Mock Draft, Picks 1-17, 12/26

December 26, 2011 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

Round 1, Picks 17-32, Round 2, Round 3, Round 4Draft Blog, NFL Draft Page

1. Indianapolis ColtsQB Andrew Luck, Stanford:

The Colts are on a winning streak, but I think they will still end up with the Andrew Luck pick.  This should make their decision relatively easy next April. While having Andrew Luck next year will be redundant if Peyton comes back, I don’t see how you can pass on him. Yes, a trade back is possible, but Luck should be the pick here, as the Colts go from one Franchise QB to another.

2. St. Louis RamsOT Matt Kalil, USC:

Kalil will help Bradford stay on his feet more.

Sam Bradford and the Rams are struggling this season, but it has little to do with Sam Bradford. The Rams receivers are dropping balls left and right, while the offensive line has allowed Bradford to be the most pressured quarterback in the league. He’s taking far too many hits this year, which is just not acceptable if the Rams are ever to become a serious contender. Kalil could lineup from day one at LT shifting Roger Saffold over to the right side and Jason Smith to the interior.

3. Minnesota Vikings-  OT Jonathan Martin, Stanford:

The Vikings LT void is the team’s biggest need heading into this offseason and Martin is a perfect plug and play guy. Drafting him makes both Christian Ponder and Adrian Peterson better, and means that this will be their top choice. They could look to trade back to a team that is desperate for a quarterback, but otherwise this should be their pick.

4. Cleveland Browns- QB Robert Griffin, Baylor:

With a pick now in the top 5 the Browns have to consider taking a franchise QB. Griffin has the potential to be a super star, and could be a major upgrade over Colt McCoy. McCoy is a solid starter, but he’s likely not ever going to develop into a top 10 or 15 guy.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- CB Morris Claiborne, LSU:

The Bucs are coming to the end of an era with Ronde Barber and can find an excellent replacement here in Claiborne. Claiborne is probably a top 5 talent, but needs at QB and OT could push him down a bit. This is a fantastic pick for the Bucs if he is on the board and could be the last ‘big’ piece they need for that defense.

6. Jacksonville JaguarsWR Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma State-:

While this has been a rough season for Blaine Gabbert, the Jaguars only have themselves to blame as they put him in a bad situation with limited weapons. Drafting Blackmon will go a long way to fixing the lack of weapons and will hopefully salvage this team.

7. Washington Redskins- OT Riley Reiff, Iowa:

With the top two quarterbacks off the board, the Redskins will have to turn to their second rated need, offensive tackle. Reiff could be an instant starter at right tackle for the Redskins and give Washington a bookend (and insurance policy) with Trent Williams.

8. Miami Dolphins- CB Dre Kirkpatrick, Alabama:

With no quarterback on the board the Dolphins should look to address their needs at either CB or along the offensive line. Right now I think they’d go CB, but a lot will depend on who their next coach is. Also I’d consider them a dark horse contender for Trent Richardson, given his upside.

9. Carolina Panthers- DT Devon Still, Penn State:

The Panthers could look to go in a variety of directions here, but the most obvious one would be defensive tackle. Devon Still has put together a very impressive season, and their defense is lacking a force in the middle. Still should immediately help the run defense, while adding pressure up the gut against the pass.

10. Buffalo Bills- OLB Quinton Coples, UNC:

Will Bills add to their defense with Coples?

The Bills have to land some more defensive help in this draft, and finding a pass rusher is a top priority. Coples is the top pass rusher on the board, but is a guy who I could see fall to the mid-round range given his inconsistency this season. He might not be a huge impact as a rookie, but he should be able to be a solid playmaker early on.

11.  Kansas City Chiefs- MLB Luke Kuechly, Boston College:

While they have a number of needs one that makes sense here is ILB. Derrick Johnson is a stud at one position, but the Chiefs could use an impact guy at the other spot. Kuechly would be a huge addition here and really add a lot to that front 7.

12.  Arizona Cardinals-OG David DeCastro, Stanford:

The Cardinals desperately need to address their offensive line in this draft, with finding a LT a top priority. Unfortunately there isn’t one here worth taking, but DeCastro is a fantastic consolation prize. He’s a day one starter at guard and should be a big help to both the running and passing games.

13. Philadelphia Eagles- OLB Zach Brown, UNC:

The Eagles linebackers have been a huge disappointment this year and it needs to be made a big priority in the offseason. Drafting a guy like Brown would give them a day one starter, and should be a nice addition to that defense. Brown is pretty good in both coverage and run recognition, and while he has solid blitzing skills, it isn’t his strength. Which is good since the Eagles don’t ask their LB’s to blitz as much.

14. Seattle Seahawks- RB Trent Richardson, Alabama:

Which team will update their running back position early in the 2012 Draft?

The Seahawks could lose Marshawn Lynch this offseason and will have to find his replacement early in the draft. With few teams at the top of the draft needing a running back the Seahawks could land a stud like Richardson. While overall the value of RB’s has gone down in the NFL, Richardson looks to be the exception to the rule.

15. San Diego ChargersCB Alonzo Dennard, Nebraska:

The Chargers could look for help at receiver or offensive line, but their secondary was probably their biggest weakness this season. Dennard is moving up draft boards and could be the 2nd corner taken. He has true shutdown corner potential, and offers good size with really good speed. His instincts are what really set him apart though and could make him a top 15 player.

16. Chicago Bears- WR Michael Floyd, Notre Dame:

The Bears could go a couple different ways, but one area they have been lacking is at wide receiver. The Bears have to give Cutler a big play target for them to have a chance. Floyd I think has moved into the 2nd spot among receivers behind Blackmon, and would be a really good addition with this pick.

Willy’s 2012 NFL Mock Draft: Round 1, 12/23

Unless some team wows them with an offer Luck will be Indy’s pick. Even if he has to sit a year or two behind Peyton Manning, it will be a smart choice as the Colts ensure their future.

2. St. Louis Rams- OT Matt Kalil, USC:

There have been some recent reports that Kalil might head back to USC, but until those are confirmed he has a top 5 spot locked up on the draft board. He’s probably the best tackle to come out since Jake Long, and is a great fit for St. Louis.

3. Minnesota Vikings- WR Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma State:

The Vikings need a lineman, but will surely take the consolation prize of an elite playmaker.

Trent Williams’ recent suspension, is reason 10,472 why the Redskins need to invest in their offensive line. Williams is one more failed test away from a year long ban, and he’d be probably better suited for RT duty anyways, as Martin can take over.

13. Arizona Cardinals- OT D.J. Fluker

The Cardinals are desperate for offensive tackle help. So far it is tough to get a read on Kolb given the amount of pressure that he is under, which is something Arizona needs to minimize next season.

14. Tennessee Titans-DT Devon Still, Penn State

The Giants offensive line needs some serious upgrades as they haven’t been able to run the ball effectively at all.

19. Chicago Bears- G Kelechi Osemele, Iowa State:

The Bears should look to build up their offensive line with this first round pick.

20. New York Jets- OLB Courtney Upshaw, Alabama:

The Jets desperately need to upgrade that pass rush and should be quite pleased with Upshaw.

21. Cincinnati Bengals- RB Trent Richardson:

Richardson may fall to a team like the Bengals.

Richardson is a top 10 or 15 player, but he could fall due to lack of need. If he does the Bengals will be thrilled as he could be the workhorse they need in this offense.

22. Denver Broncos- RB Lamar Miller, Miami

With Moreno likely on the shelf and MaGahee getting up there in age an early round back makes too much sense.

23. Dallas Cowboys- OLB Whitney Mercilus, Illinois

Cowboys need a bookend to Ware, and Spencer is a free agent.

24. Detroit Lions- LB Luke Kuechly, Boston College:

The Lions could go offensive line or CB here, but I could see them favoring a tackling machine like Kuechly.

25. Cleveland Browns (via Atlanta)- OT Barrett Jones, Alabama

The Browns need a bookend to Thomas (or they could slot Jones at guard if they like Pashos). And after taking a QB adding some extra protection is a smart play.
