2012 NFL Mock Draft: Picks 17-32, 11/28

November 28, 2011 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

Round 1, Picks 17-32, Round 2, Round 3, Round 4, Draft Blog, NFL Draft Page

17. Denver Broncos- DT Brandon Thompson, Clemson-

The Broncos have the makings of a really great defense, but they need to add more help in their secondary and at defensive tackle. Thompson is the 2nd best defensive tackle on the board and gives Denver a quality interior presence.

18. New York Jets- OLB Courtney Upshaw, Alabama-

The Jets could think about an offensive linemen here, but a pass rusher makes more sesne. Upshaw is a ‘do everything’ type of linebacker and I’m sure Rex Ryan will find plenty of creative ways to get him after the quarterback. Upshaw has the potential to be an elite pass rusher, which is the one thing the Jets have lacked for sometime there.

19. Chicago Bears- OT D.J. Fluker, Alabama-

The Bears once promising season could collapse due to the injury to Jay Cutler. While it wasn’t the offensive line’s fault that he was injured, they are by far the weakest unit on the team. Fluker has left tackle talent and should be able to be given a look there as a rookie. With Fluker and last year’s first rounder, Gabe Carimi, the Bears will have the bookend tackles that have alluded them for years.

20. New York Giants- G David DeCastro, Stanford-

The Giants need to get younger and more talented along the interior of their offensive line, making DeCastro a perfect pick for them. He excels at run blocking and is a great fit for their offensive style.

21. Houston Texans- WR Michael Floyd, Notre Dame-

The Texans could look to go defense here or even offensive line, but I think the chance to add another top target could be too much to pass up. Floyd I think has move ahead of Jeffery among receivers in this class and would be a great complement to Andre Johnson. Adding him will make Schaub’s return much easier next year, and should help keep the passing game among the better units in the league.

22. Detroit Lions- C Peter Konz, Wisconsin-

The Lions need to go offensive line with this pick, and will likely look at either a LT prospect or a center. With Konz on the board, I could see the Lions grabbing him with this pick. He’s a good all-around blocker, who is advanced enough to start as a rookie. While his strength is run blocking, his addition will be a major boost to Matt Stafford’s protection.

23. Cleveland Browns (via Atlanta)- WR Alshon Jeffery, South Carolina-

I think it is pretty likely that Jeffery slides some in this draft. While he’s a very talented receiver he hasn’t taken over games the same way other top WR prospects have over the years. He’d be a good fit in Cleveland though where he can pair up with Greg Little to give the Browns a nice young pair of receivers.

24. Cincinnati Bengals- CB Alfonzo Dennard, Nebraska-

The Bengals should be thrilled if Dennard makes it this far in the draft and turn this pick in with about 9 minutes and 50 seconds to go on the clock. Dennard is a high upside corner, who long term could pair up with Leon Hall, to give the Bengals a pair of front line corners. Also given Hall’s recent injury, this pick makes even more sense, since they could be without him at the start of next season.

25. Dallas Cowboys- CB Janoris Jenkins, North Alabama-

The Cowboys could look at an interior lineman with this pick, but I think they look to strengthen that weakened secondary. Jenkins has a ton of talent and while some off the field issues forced him to leave Florida, I don’t see them being much of a hangup come draft day.

26. Cincinnati Bengals (via Oakland)- RB Lamar Miller, Miami-

The Bengals could look to add some help along the offensive line, but the chance to add a big play running back like Miller could be too good to pass up. Miller would give them a nice weapon out of the backfield and is a long term feature back. While there are some other needs, this could be enough of a ‘want’ that it warrants picking.

27. Baltimore Ravens- ILB Luke Kuechly, Boston College-

The Ravens have to begin to prepare for life after Ray Lewis, and with such a strong (albeit top heavy) ILB class Baltimore should be able to find their man. Kuechly is a tackling machine at Boston College and could learn beside Lewis for a couple of years before taking over as the heart and soul of that defense.

28. San Francisco 49ers- OG Kelechi Osemele, Iowa State-

The 49ers don’t have many weaknesses, but one of the main ones is at RG where Adam Snyder and Chilo Rachal have combined to be among the worst RG units in the league. Osemele is a strong power guard, who also has experience at tackle and could possibly get a look along the right side. He would fill a huge need, and should be a day 1 starter.

29. New England Patriots (via New Orleans)- CB Chase Minnifield, UVA-

The Patriots are likely to deal one of these picks, but if they keep them then Minnifield makes too much sense here for the Patriots to pass up. New England continues to have a major need in the secondary, and Minnifield’s father was a former star corner for Bill Belichick when he coached the Browns in the early 90′s.

30. New England Patriots- OLB Ronnell Lewis, Oklahoma-

Again, I wouldn’t bet on the Patriots actually making this selection, but if they do look for it to be on defense. New England’s pass rush could use a boost and Lewis has been moving up draft boards of late.

31. Pittsburgh Steelers- OG Cordy Glenn, Georgia-

The Steelers could go a number of different ways here, but adding a guard here wouldn’t hurt. While part of it is due to injuries, the Steelers offensive line remains one of their weaker units. Given their style of football they need to beef up that line to protect Big Ben, and give Mendenhall more room to work with on the ground.

32. Green Bay Packers- OLB Whitney Mercilus, Illinois-

The Packers continue to search for a rush linebacker complement to Clay Matthews, and should look to grab one early in the draft. If Whitney Mercilus is still on the board when they select, they should look no further. Mercilus has been garnering some Simeon Rice and Terrell Suggs comparisons and would be a nice addition to their defense.

2012 NFL Mock Draft: 1-16, 11/28

November 28, 2011 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

Round 1, Picks 17-32, Round 2, Round 3, Round 4, Draft Blog, NFL Draft Page

1. Indianapolis ColtsQB Andrew Luck, Stanford-

The Colts are now the ‘last man standing’ when it comes to win-less teams, which should make their decision relatively easy next April. While having Andrew Luck next year will be redundant if Peyton comes back, I don’t see how you can pass on him. Yes a trade back is possible, but Luck should be the pick here, as the Colts go from one Franchise QB to another.

2. St. Louis RamsOT Matt Kalil, USC-

Sam Bradford and the Rams are struggling this season, but it has little to do with Sam Bradford. The Rams receivers are dropping balls left and right, while the offensive line has allowed Bradford to be the most pressured quarterback in the league. He’s taking far too many hits this year, which is just not acceptable if the Rams are ever to become a serious contender. Kalil could lineup from day one at LT shifting Roger Saffold over to the right side and Jason Smith to the interior.

3. Minnesota Vikings-  OT Jonathan Martin, Stanford-

The Vikings LT void is the team’s biggest need heading into this offseason and Martin is a perfect plug and play guy. Drafting him makes both Christian Ponder and Adrian Peterson better, and means that this will be their top choice. They could look to trade back to a team that is desperate for a quarterback, but otherwise this should be their pick.

4. Jacksonville JaguarsWR Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma State-

While this has been a rough season for Blaine Gabbert the Jaguars only have themselves to blame as they put him in a bad situation with limited weapons. Drafting Blackmon will go a long way to fixing the lack of weapons and will hopefully salvage this team.

5. Miami Dolphins- QB Matt Barkley, USC-

The Dolphins need to find their next signal caller next offseason and they are likely to find their guy through the draft. While Matt Barkley might not be Andrew Luck, he’s a quality quarterback prospect who should grow into a really good quarterback. He might not be the second coming of Dan Marino, but he should be the best quarterback in Miami since Marino left.

6. Carolina Panthers- CB Morris Claiborne, LSU

The Panthers could go in a number of different directions, but I could see them popping Claiborne here. Claiborne is moving up draft boards and looks to be a top 10 guy at this point. While you can make a strong case for WR, OT, or DT, Claiborne is the best value for this pick and could really help that secondary.

7. Arizona Cardinals-OT Riley Reiff, Iowa-

The Cardinals desperately need to address their offensive line in this draft, with finding a LT a top priority. Reiff is a really talented prospect, and while he might not be a day one stud, he should be an immediate upgrade.

8. Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin, Baylor -

The Redskins are another team that has to revamp their quarterback depth chart, and are a near lock to draft a guy early. While they would probably like Matt Barkley, they can land a higher upside guy here in Griffin. Some might want to classify Griffin as a ‘running quarterback’, but he’s more accurate and precise than any other quarterback in this class. He also doesn’t have near the same level of talent around him that other top signal callers do. The Redskins could look to trade back from this spot, given their variety of needs, but Mike Shanahan has always liked big name quarterbacks, so my guess is Washington pulls the trigger on this one.

9. Cleveland Browns- RB Trent Richardson, Alabama-

The Browns desperately need an upgrade at running back, and with a pair of 1st round picks they can select the top guy here and still strengthen one of their many other needs. Richardson has the potential to be another Adrian Peterson, and has displayed advanced pass protection for a young back, meaning he should be good for every down.

10. Seattle Seahawks- QB Landry Jones, Oklahoma-

The Seahawks missed out on the top quarterbacks, but that doesn’t mean they are out of the QB market completely. Jones has slid down some draft boards, but he is still a talented quarterback prospect. He probably needs to sit a year or two, but afterwards he should be a good starter in this league.

11.  Kansas City ChiefsILB Vontaze Burfict, Arizona State-

While they have a number of needs one that makes sense here is ILB. Derrick Johnson is a stud at one position, but the Chiefs could use an impact guy at the other spot. Burfict would be a huge addition here and really add a lot to that front 7.

12.  Philadelphia Eagles- DT Devon Still, Penn State-

The Eagles could go a couple of different directions, but grabbing the top DT off the board is a pretty safe call. Philly has to generate a better pass rush up the middle, and Still could be a major addition for their defense.

13. San Diego Chargers-CB Dre Kirkpatrick, Alabama-

The Chargers could look for help at receiver or offensive line, but if they go best player available Kirkpatrick should be the pick here. He has true shutdown corner potential, and offers great size with really good speed.

14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- OLB Zach Brown, UNC-

The Bucs have a variety of needs, but adding the top 4-3 OLB makes a lot of sense here. Tampa’s linebacking play has been pretty poor of late, making Brown a pretty solid need.

15. Buffalo Bills- Quinton Coples, UNC-

The Bills have to land some more defensive help in this draft, and finding a pass rusher is a top priority. Coples is the top pass rusher on the board, but is a guy who I could see fall to the mid-round range given his inconsistency this season. He might not be a huge impact as a rookie, but he should be able to be a solid playmaker early on.

16. Tennessee Titans- LB Manti Te’o

The Titans have a major hole at middle linebacker and could fill it with Te’o at this spot. Defensive end or wide receiver could also be good options, but I’d look for them to add that stud linebacker with this pick.

By Contributing Writer Willypops

1. Indianapolis Colts- QB Andrew Luck, Stanford

The Colts have the chance to build up another perennial playoff team, with another franchise QB and I think they will take it.

2. Carolina Panthers- WR Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma State

The Panthers have their franchise quarterback, now they need to land a top flight receiver.

3. St. Louis Rams- OT Matt Kalil, USC

Sam Bradford might be a franchise quarterback, but it is hard to tell since he is running for his life on just about every play.

4. Minnesota Vikings- WR Alshon Jeffery, South Carolina

The Vikings need to add a top flight receiver for Christian Ponder and Jeffery is the 2nd best in this draft.

5. Washington Redskins- OT Jonathan Martin, Stanford

The Redskins could go quarterback here, but since it’s impossible to complete the ball if you are on the ground offensive tackle is another need that must be addressed.

6. Jacksonville Jaguars- WR Michael Floyd, Notre Dame

The Jags need to land a receiver early in this draft and while this is a bit high for Floyd, he’s the big play receiver their offense needs.

7. Arizona Cardinals- OT Riley Reiff, Iowa

The Cardinals have one of the worst offensive lines in the league and must find some help this offseason.

8. Miami Dolphins- QB Robert Griffin, Baylor

The Dolphins need to land a young QB, and you can make a case that Griffin is the 2nd best QB in the draft.

9. Philadelphia Eagles- DT Devon Still, Penn State

The Eagles should be thrilled if they land Still, who is a monster in the middle.

10. Cleveland Browns- QB Matt Barkley, USC

Matt Barkley is a good quarterback prospect, but he’ll probably never be considered great. A team would probably trade up for him, but if not he could fall a few spots to the Browns.

11. Kansas City Chiefs- OLB Quinton Coples, UNC

Coples should be able to make the transition to rush linebacker and give the Chiefs another quality pass rusher.

12. Seattle Seahawks- QB Landry Jones, Oklahoma

The Seahawks can land their QB of the future here in Landry Jones.

13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- ILB Vontaze Burfict, Arizona State

The Bucs could go CB or OT, but Burfict might be too good to pass up.

14. San Diego Chargers- CB Morris Claiborne, LSU

The Chargers don’t have any pressing needs so they can go with best value here.

15. Tennessee Titans- ILB Luke Kuechly, Boston College

The Titans need to find some help in the middle of their defense.

16. New York Jets-RB Trent Richardson, Alabama

Shonn Greene is a nice running back, but he might not be a true feature back. For the Jets to win they need a strong running game and if Richardson falls, it’s a great value pick at this spot.

17. Buffalo Bills-CB Dre Kirkpatrick, Alabama

Buffalo needs some major help in the secondary and Kirkpatrick is a guy who could easily go 10 picks higher.

18. Denver Broncos- DT Brandon Thompson, Clemson

The Broncos need to find a guy who can anchor inside for them to help the outside pass rush of Von Miller and Dumerville.

19. Dallas Cowboys- CB Alonzo Dennard, Nebraska

The Cowboys secondary has been pathetic this year making CB a top priority.

20. Cleveland Browns (via ATL)- RB Lamar Miller, Miami

The Browns need to rebuild their rushing attack and Miller is the 2nd best back in the draft.

21. Cincinnati Bengals- G David DeCastro, Stanford

Cincy doesn’t have too many needs, but one of the main ones is at guard.

22. New York Giants- C Peter Konz, Wisconsin

The Giants have a major need along the interior of their offensive line, and Konz is the top player available.

23. Cincinnati Bengals (via OAK)- CB Chase Minnifield, Virginia

The Bengals could use another cornerback and Minnifield is a guy who could start for them right away.

24. Houston Texans- G Cordy Glenn, Georgia

The Texans offensive line is their strength but it could undergo an overhaul this year, as they have a couple free agents, and a couple of players getting up there in age.

25. New England Patriots- CB Janoris Jenkins, North Alabama

Despite drafting a couple over the last few years, CB remains among the Patriots top needs.

26. New England Patriots (Via N.O.)- LB Zach Brown, UNC

Brown is a great value here and if the Patriots continue using 4-3 defense he’d be a great fit.

27. Chicago Bears- OT Mike Adams, Ohio State

The Bears drafted one Big 10 offensive tackle last year for their RT position, this year they will go back to the conference for their LT need.

28. Detroit Lions- OT D.J. Fluker, Alabama

The Lions are struggling to keep Matt Stafford protected making OT a major need.

29. Baltimore Ravens- ILB Manti Te’o, Notre Dame

The Ravens need to find the heir apparent to Ray Lewis, and Te’o is a great value here.

30. San Francisco 49ers- OLB Courtney Upshaw, Alabama

Ahmad Brooks is a free agent next season which could lead to the 49ers picking another pass rusher this year. Upshaw and Aldon Smith will ensure San Fran’s defense stays at the top of their game.

31. Pittsburgh Steelers- DT Dontari Poe, Memphis

The Steelers Casey Hampton is getting up there in age, and they should be in the market for a new NT.

32. Green Bay Packers- OLB Bruce Irvin, WVU

The Packers have been searching for another pass rusher to go along with Clay Matthews. They should like Irvin who is a true speed rusher, and a bit undersized, similar to Matthews when he entered the league.

2012 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2, 11/21

Round 1, Picks 17-32, Round 2, Round 3, Round 4, Round 5, Draft Blog, NFL Draft Page

33. Indianapolis Colts- CB Xaiver Rhodes, FSU-

Comment: The Colts’ secondary has been simply atrocious this season. Rhodes has a lot of big play ability and should be an immediate starter for them.

34. Carolina Panthers- DT Brandon Thompson, Clemson

Comment: I really don’t know if Thompson will fall this far, but if he does the Panthers will stop his slide right here. They have a huge need at DT, and Thompson would be a great addition.

35. St. Louis Rams- WR Nick Toon, Wisconsin

Comment: After adding a LT, now the Rams can focus on adding more weapons for Bradford. Toon is one of my favorite receivers in the draft and I think he will be a nice receiver for them going forward.

36. Washington Redskins- OT Zebrie Sanders, FSU

Comment: After QB RT (actually 4/5 of the offensive line) is this team’s biggest need. Sanders has good upside and could maybe move over to the left side if Trent Williams doesn’t develop into the franchise LT they are hoping for.

37. Philadelphia Eagles (via Arizona)- CB Jayron Hosley, Virginia Tech

Comment: Asante Samuel is going to be a cap casualty after this seasona and they need to find a replacement.

38. Miami Dolphins- G Kelechi Osemele, Iowa State

Comment: The Dolphins could look to kick Osemele outside to RT as that is their biggest need, if not he could stay inside and maybe move Vernon Carey back out to RT (if he’s resigned)

39. Jacksonville Jaguars- G Barrett Jones, Oklahoma

Comment: The Jags need to build up their offensive line, as they hope to get the most out of Blaine Gabbert.

40. Minnesota Vikings- WR Mohamed Sanu, Rutgers

Comment: Vikings need to add some weapons for Christian Ponder and Sanu fits that bill completely.

41. Cleveland Browns- OT Levy Adcock, Oklahoma State

Comment: The Browns could use a RT upgrade, and Adcock is a guy who should be able to step in Day 1.

42. Seattle Seahawks- RB Lamar Miller, Miami

Comment: The Seahawks need to add a playmaker at running back and Miller is by far the best guy on the board.

43. Kansas City Chiefs- QB Ryan Tannehill, Texas A&M

Comment: Matt Cassel looks to be more like just a solid quarterback rather than a true ‘franchise guy’. Taking Tannehill here would allow the Chiefs to develop him for a year or two behind Cassel, and then turn the reigns over to him.

44. San Diego Chargers- ILB Don’ta Hightower, Alabama

Comment: The Chargers would be getting nice value here for Hightower and would continue to strengthen their defense, which has become pretty porous of late.

45. Tennessee Titans- TE Dwayne Allen, Clemson

Comment: Jared Cook has just been okay so far in Tennessee and with a young QB being groomed a high upside TE seems like a smart pick here.

46. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- OT Andrew Datko, FSU

Comment: The Bucs desperately need to find some help along their line, and while Datko needs to be cleared medically, he’s got the potential to fix their tackle need for the next 5-10 years.

47. Philadelphia Eagles- DT Jerel Worthy, Michigan State

Comment: The Eagles need to add some talent to their DT mix, and Worthy is a great value at this point in the draft.

48. Denver Broncos- RB Chris Polk, Washington

Comment: The Broncos need to add some additional help to their backfield as Moreno (who has struggled thus far in his career) will be coming off a major injury. Polk is a very underrated back, and should give Tebow another strong weapon for their option offense.

49. Buffalo Bills- OLB Ronnell Lewis, Oklahoma

Comment: The Bills need to continue their defensive focus, and adding a pass rusher like Lewis would be key.

50. Atlanta Falcons- DT Kawaan Short, Purdue

Comment: The Falcons get a great value pick here, and one that really strengthens their defense as well. Short is flying up draft boards and for good reason as he’s been simply unblockable for much of the season.

51. New York Jets- QB Brandon Weeden, Oklahoma State

Comment: Mark Sanchez is really becoming a liability. While I understand they need to keep playing him now, if he continues to struggle next year they have got to pull the plug on him. Weeden is an older prospect (spent 5 years in minor league ball), but he’s also more NFL ready. If Sanchez can’t do the job next year he should be advanced enough to take over and not negatively impact the team.

52. Dallas Cowboys- NT Dontari Poe, Memphis

Comment: The Cowboys can add an anchor to their line in Poe here. While it’s not a major need, it’s a good value pick and should make an early impact in Dallas.

53. Chicago Bears- CB Stephon Gilmore, South Carolina

Comment: When you play in a division with Rodgers and Stafford, it would be wise to stock up on corners. Gilmore has immense potential, and if he puts it all together he could be great.

54. Cincinnati Bengals- CB Jonathan Banks, Mississippi State

Comment: The Bengals could use another CB and Banks is a nice value here. He’s got excellent size and has very strong instincts.

55. Detroit Lions- FS Markelle Martin, Oklahoma State

Comment: The Lions secondary is their weak link on defense and should be fixed this offseason. Martin is a great value pick here and could be an instant starter for them.

56. New England Patriots (via Oakland)- S T.J. McDonald, USC

Comment: The Patriots need to continue to strengthen their defense, and McDonald is a strong versatile player who could come in and get some significant playing time as a rookie.

57. Houston Texans- QB Nick Foles, Arizona

Comment: While I wouldn’t call Matt Schaub’s injury career threatening, it is pretty serious and should make the Texans think about the future. Now that Houston has finally become a playoff contender the last thing they’d want is to have a collapse like the Colts because they were unprepared for their QB to be injured.

58. New York Giants- SS Mark Barron, Alabama

Comment: The Giants safety play has been pretty bad this year, and I can’t imagine Rolle keeps his job for too long if he continues to play like this.

59. Baltimore Ravens- OLB Brandon Jenkins, FSU

Comment: Jarrett Johnson is one of the Ravens many free agents this offseason. If he isn’t retained they will need to find his replacement. While they already have Kindle on the roster, they would be wise to add another option.

60. San Francisco 49ers- WR Kendall Wright, Baylor

Comment: Both Ginn and Edwards are free agents after the season so adding some weapons will be key. Wright would be a nice starter opposite Crabtree, and should allow the 49ers to spread the field.

61. New Orleans Saints- DT Fletcher Cox, Mississippi State

Comment: The Saints have some free agent DT’s this year, and could look to go younger to fill the need. Cox is a solid value here and he has a lot of upside.

62. New England Patriots- WR Dwight Jones, UNC

Comment: The Patriots could look to part ways with Ochocinco, leaving them with a real need at WR. Jones is a big target with great leaping ability and should be a nice complement to Welker and the TE’s.

63. Pittsburgh Steelers-  DT Josh Chapman, Alabama

Comment: The Steelers need to add a young NT, and while their are mixed opinions on Chapman, I think this is well worth the pick for the Steelers. He keeps this defense going forward and will have at least a year to develop behind Hampton.

64. Green Bay Packers- DE Jared Crick, Nebraska

Comment: This is tremendous value for the Packers here, as when healthy Crick is a potential top 25 pick. It also fills a need, so this is a major win for Green bay.
