2012 NFL Mock Draft: 3rd Round 10/31

October 31, 2011 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

Round 1, Picks 17-32, Round 2, Round 3, Round 4, Draft Blog, NFL Draft Page

65. Miami Dolphins- OT Nate Potter, Boise State

The Dolphins invested in the quarterback, now they need to protect him.

66. Indianapolis Colts- DE Brandon Lindsey, Pittsburgh

The Colts need to find some DE help as Mathis and Freeney are both getting older (and Mathis is a free agent). Lindsey gives them a guy, who should immediately contribute on passing downs.

67. Denver Broncos- DT Sylvester Williams, UNC

The Broncos need to get some bodies in the interior, or their line will just never be right.

68. St. Louis Rams- OLB Don’ta Hightower, Alabama-

The Rams get a steal here in Hightower, who could project as a top 40 pick. He is a bit of a tweener, but I think he’d be a solid for for them at WLB.

69. Seattle Seahawks- WR Marvin McNutt, Iowa-

The Seahawks could use another weapon at WR, and McNutt is a guy with a lot of potential.

70. Jacksonville Jaguars- CB Xavier Rhodes, FSU

The Jags could use another big play corner, to round out their defense.

71.  Arizona Cardinals- DE Mercilus Whitney, Illinois

The Cards need to find more of pass rush this offseason and Whitney has some nice potential as a rush linebacker.

72. Minnesota Vikings- FS Markell Martin, Oklahoma State

The Vikings need to add a young free safety to improve their secondary.

73. Washington Redskins- C Michael Brewster, Ohio State

The Redskins offensive line is just a mess right now. Brewster is a guy who could potentially start from day one.

74. Cleveland Browns- OLB Ronnell Lewis, Oklahoma

The Browns outside linebacker have just been bad this season. And while adding Brown was a start, this would be a great 2nd addition here.

75. Chicago Bears (via Carolina)- DE Vinny Curry, Marshall

The Bears could use a complement to Peppers in getting after the QB, and Curry is a nice value for this pick.

76. Kansas City Chiefs- TE Orson Charles, Georgia

The Chiefs could use an additional TE in their passing game.

77. Tennessee Titans- WR Kendall Wright, Baylor

The Titans could use another receiver as they look to add weapons for when Jake Locker is ready to take over.

78. Chicago Bears- S T.J. McDonald, USC

The Bears need a lot of secondary help, and McDonald is a player with a lot of upside.

79. Atlanta Flacons- RB Chris Polk, Washington

The Falcons can’t rely on Michael Turner forever, and Rodgers is more of a change of pace back.

80. Dallas Cowboys- FS Robert Lester, Alabama

The Cowboys secondary is a serious issue and Lester would be a nice upgrade.

81. Cincinnati Bengals- CB Coryell Judie, Texas A&M

The Bengals could use another quality corner making this a good pick for them.

82. New York Giants- SS Mark Barron, Alabama

The Giants could look for a young safety to replace Rolle with.

83. New York Jets- QB Kirk Cousins, Michigan State

The Jets need to think about adding a young QB in case Sanchez isn’t the long term answer.

84. Philadelphia Eagles-TE Coby Fleener, Stanford

The Eagles could look to add a young TE to replace Celek.

85. Buffalo Bills- OT Jeff Allen, Illinois

The Bills have done well this year with protecting Fitzpatrick, but they could use some depth here.

86. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- CB Cliff Harris, Oregon

Ronde Barber can’t play forever, meaning the Bucs need to find his replacement.

87. Houston Texans- SS Tony Dye, UCLA

The Texans need to keep building up that defense, if they want to be an annual playoff contender.

88. San Diego Chargers- DE Cam Johnson, UVA

The Chargers could use another solid DE, which is exactly what Johnson is.

89. Detroit Lions- CB Shaun Prater, Iowa

The Lions need a lot of help in the secondary, and Prater is a nice fit here.

90. San Francisco 49ers- OT Matt McCants, UAB

91. Baltimore Ravens- RB David Wilson, Virginia Tech

92. New Orleans- WR Rueban Randle, LSU

93. New England Patriots- DE Alex Okafor, Texas

94.  Pittsburgh Steelers- RB Doug Martin, Boise State

95. Green Bay Packers- CB Brandon Boykin, Georgia

2012 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2 10/31

October 31, 2011 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

Round 1, Picks 17-32, Round 2, Round 3, Round 4, Draft Blog, NFL Draft Page

33. Miami Dolphins- CB Jayron Hosley, Virginia Tech

The Dolphins cornerbacks have constantly gotten beat this year, and they could use a first rate upgrade. Hosley has first round talent and is a great fit here at the top of round 2. He should be able to start from Day one, and has the upside of another former Tech corner, DeAngelo Hall.

34. Indianapolis Colts- DT Devon Still, Penn State

The Colts need to find some help in the middle, and Still looks to be the best DT available at this point. A big time defensive tackle will help make the Colts undersized LB’s relevant again.

35. Denver Broncos- QB Ryan Tannehill, Texas A&M

The Broncos fans may love Tim Tebow now, but it is apparent the coaching staff isn’t sold (and for good reason) which should make Denver quite interested in some of the top signal callers next April. The Broncos get a special player here in Tannehill, who I see steadily moving up draft charts. While he might not be considered in the same category as Barkley or Jones, he probably should be. He has tremendous upside, and if they give him time he should reward their patience.

36. St. Louis Rams- DT Jerel Worthy, Michigan State

The Rams could go in a number of directions, but adding a stopper in the middle would be huge. Worthy would be an instant upgrade in the interior and should help improve that entire defense.

37. Seattle Seahawks- RB LaMichael James, Oregon

The Seahawks need to add a big play back, and James is the best in the business. He gives Barkley a young back to develop with and provide the Seahawks with a weapon to balance out the power attack of Marshawn Lynch (assuming he re-signs).

38. Jacksonville Jaguars- OG Kelechi Osemele, Iowa State

They landed their big play receiver in round one, but they need to add more help to Gabbert in round two. Osemele is a top level guard and should help both Gabbert and MJD be more effective.

39.  Philadelphia Eagles (via Arizona)- SS Ray Ray Armstrong, Miami

The Eagles don’t have a ton of needs, but one of their top areas of concern is finding a long term answer at SS. Armstrong could be that answer as he has the upside to be an elite player. While he is not fully disciplined, the potential is there and he’d be a nice pick up for them at this point.

40. Minnesota Vikings- WR Nick Toon, Wisconsin

The Vikings need to add some receivers for Ponder to grow with, and Toon would be a great fit here in the 2nd round. He’s not in a pass heavy offense, but Toon is the real deal, and could develop into a number 1 receiver down the road.

41. Washington Redskins- OT Levy Adcock, Oklahoma State

The Redskins need to add a ton of help along the offensive line, and Adcock would be a good start. While he has some LT potential, he could start off at RT for the Skins, and help ensure their investment in Robert Griffin. Adcock would be an immediate upgrade over Jamaal Brown, who has just been a trainwreck on the right side for them.

42. Cleveland Browns- CB Jonathan Banks, Mississippi State-

The Browns don’t have a huge need for a CB here, but I love Banks upside and could see him as a nice fit in Cleveland. He’s a tall, physical corner, who displays advanced ball skills and should help them shut down opposing passing attacks.

43. Carolina Panthers- OG Barrett Jones, Alabama

The Panthers need to strengthen that offensive line to keep their triple running threat going forward, and give Newton more time in the pocket. Jones is a great fit here, and has very good potential.

44. Kansas City Chiefs- OT Mike Adams, Ohio State-

The Chiefs need to get better play from their RT spot, and Adams  would be a fantastic option here. He’s got fantastic upside, and is a great power blocker.

45. Tennessee Titans- DE Donte Paige Moss, UNC

The Titans need to get a better pass rush, and that is where Moss comes in. He’s an active pass rusher, who excels at getting after the quarterback. He does need to get better in run support, but he’s a solid 2nd round pick.

46. Chicago Bears- C Peter Konz, Wisconsin

The Bears need to beef up that line, and Konz is a great value here if he comes out. He’s the type of center that could anchor the line for the next decade and should be a welcomed sight in Chicago.

47. Atlanta Flacons- OG Cordy Glenn, Georgia

The Falcons are missing Harvey Dahl in the interior of their line, and Glenn would be a great replacement here. Matt Ryan has faced too much pressure and that has to change for Atlanta to be successful.

48. Dallas Cowboys- C Ben Jones, Georgia

The Cowboys interior line has been pathetic this year. Jones would give them an immediate upgrade at center, and has future Pro Bowl potential.

49. Cincinnati Bengals- OLB Travis Lewis, Oklahoma

With Manny Lawson a free agent (and not a great fit for the defense) the Bengals could look to add a LB early. Lewis would be a good fit here and would keep that defense strong.

50. New York Giants- RB Lamar Miller, Miami

The Giants are likely parting ways with Brandon Jacobs this offseason, meaning they will need to find a complement to Ahmad Bradshaw. While Miller isn’t really a completely different back, he gives the Giants another weapon in their backfield, which should be their primary concern. This is a good value pick for him here.

51. New York Jets- WR Mohamed Sanu, Rutgers

The Jets need to add another big target for when Plaxico Burress hangs them up. Sanu is a nice fit here, as he looks to be a playmaker at the next level.

52. New England Patriots (via Oakland)- WR Ryan Broyles, Oklahoma

The Patriots like finding weapons and that is exactly what Broyles is. He should thrive in the spread out, quick pass offense the Patriots run, and has the speed and elusiveness to make plays in the open field.

53. Philadelphia Eagles-OLB Lavonte David, Nebraska

The Eagles need to keep strengthening their defense, and David would join with Te’o to revamp Philly’s linebacking corps.

54. Buffalo Bills- CB Stephon Gilmore, South Carolina

The Bills have done well this year, but they need to keep bolstering that defense. Gilmore has big play potential, and could develop into a top notch corner. He’s not consistent enough right now, but this is a good upside pick here.

55. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- DT Christian Tupou, USC

The Bucs need to get help in the interior, and Tupou is a guy who is rising right now. This could be a slight reach for him, but I like his upside and think he’d be the perfect fit for that line.

56. Houston Texans- WR Dwight Jones, UNC

The Texans need a complement to Andre Johnson, and Jones is a great option here. He has big play potential as well, and should thrive playing opposite Johnson.

57. San Diego Chargers- TE Dwayne Allen, Clemson

Antonio Gates is getting up there with age and injuries, and Allen could be his replacement going forward. Not to mention with the new fad of two TE sets, Allen and Gates could do a lot of damage when on the field together.

58. Detroit Lions- OT Andrew Datko, FSU

Datko has some injury issues that need checking out, but if he is cleared medically this could be a steal.

59. San Francisco 49ers- WR Jeff Fuller, Texas A&M

Braylon Edwards is a free agent so a replacement will need to be found.

60. Baltimore Ravens- OG Kevin Zeitler, Wisconsin

Ben Grubbs is a free agent this season, and if he isn’t resigned they will need to replace him in the draft. The Ravens keep adding to their line here, but it is a smart play for them.

61. New Orleans- DT Kawaan Short, Purdue

The Saints could lose two of their top 3 DT’s this offseason, making a guy like Short important to their future.

62. New England Patriots- NT Dontari Poe, Memphis

The Patriots again aren’t likely to keep all these picks, but if they do, how do they pass up a NT. Wilfork might only have a few years left, and in the meantime he can fit in the rotation and really improve that run defense.

63.  Pittsburgh Steelers- OT Zebrie Sanders, FSU

The Steelers need to upgrade their offensive line if they want to keep Big Ben healthy. Sanders could fit in at either tackle spot. While he could be a bit raw as a rookie I still think he could end up starting.

64. Green Bay Packers- DE Melvin Ingram, South Carolina

The Packers really need to upgrade their pass rush, and Ingram could be a good fit here. While some will say he is too small to play in a 3-4 system, they aren’t watching the same tape that I see. It doesn’t matter where Ingram lines up, as he is always making plays. He could add a little bulk, but overall I think he’ll be fine.

2012 NFL Mock Draft: 17-32 10/31

October 31, 2011 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

Round 1, Picks 17-32, Round 2, Round 3, Round 4, Draft Blog, NFL Draft Page

17. Cincinnati Bengals- WR Michael Floyd, Notre Dame

The Bengals did just grab a top receiver last year, but I could see them making this selection. For one thing Cincinnati doesn’t have as many holes as you’d expect, as they are solid on defense and their offensive line is fairly good. Another reason why they could look at the position is because both Jerome Simpson and Andre Caldwell are free agents next year, and overall have just been average to above average. The Bengals might not want to invest much in resigning them, and instead take a higher upside guy in Floyd. Floyd teamed up with A.J. Green could be down right scary for opposing defenses. I think Floyd is one of the more polished receivers in this class, and should be an instant impact in the NFL. Jeffery and Blackmon might have higher upside, but Floyd isn’t that far behind and could do more damage as a rookie.

18. New York Giants-  CB Alonzo Dennard, Nebraska

I know it would be rare to draft Prince Amukamara’s Nebraska teammate, but it could very well happen. The Giants CB situation is really up in the air going forward, as both Terrell Thomas and Aaron Ross are impending free agents, and Corey Webster has been just average of late. Dennard has slid down the draft board somewhat, but he’s easily a top 20 pick, and would really strengthen that secondary.

19. New York Jets-OLB Brandon Jenkins, FSU-

Jets could miss the playoffs unless Mark Sanchez really steps up this season, and if that is the case I’d look at two main culprits (outside of Sanchez). The offensive line and their rush linebackers. While they could go after an offensive lineman, they have more depth and talent there than at OLB. Both Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas are good pass rushers, but neither is great, and both are starting to get up there in age. Adding a young pass rush specialist like Jenkins could be huge for the Jets and give them the sack artist to go along with the rest of that elite defense.

20. Cincinnati Bengals (via Oakland): G David DeCastro, Stanford-

The Bengals held out and they were rewarded with the Raiders desperation for a new quarterback. The Bengals would be quite lucky to land DeCastro here, as he is a day one starter at guard, and could help improve their young offense. DeCastro fills a big need as the Bengals interior line is in shambles right now

21.Philadelphia Eagles- ILB Manti Te’o, Notre Dame.-

The Eagles could go a number of different areas, but right now their biggest question marks are at LB and DT. With no tackle here worthy of a top 20 selection the Eagles would be wise to turn their attention to middle linebacker. Manti Te’o would be an excellent pick here for the Eagles. He’s a smart football player with good athleticism, and should start from day 1.

22. Buffalo Bills- OLB Bruce Irvin, WVU-

The Bills need to generate a more consistent pass rush, which has been lack this season (the Redskins game notwithstanding), and Irvin is probably the best pure pass rusher in this draft. While he might not be on a ‘Von Miller’ level, he should help them from day one at the very least as a pass rush specialist.

23. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- OT D.J. Fluker, Alabama-

The Bucs need to improve their offensive line this offseason if they every want this young offense to take their game to that championship caliber level. Fluker is just a red-shirt sophomore, but he could be looking to come out as the Tide are losing a ton of players, and they are likely coming off a major Bowl game. He’d be a great fit for them at RT, where Jeremy Trueblood has been a complete joke. He’s also the type of prospect who could grow into the LT role in a year or two.

24. Houston Texans- DT Alameda Ta’amu, Washington-

I really like what the Texans have done this offseason and I think this new defense will take them pretty far. They will still need some help though going forward and I think their primary need will be at NT. Ta’amu is a fantastic run defender and profiles to be a starting NT in the NFL. He’d be a great pickup here late in round 1, and should start right away.

25. San Diego Chargers- DT Josh Chapman, Alabama-

The Chargers front three is suspect even after the addition of Corey Liguet. Chapman gives SD another big man, and one who is capable of helping out at NT, their weakest position. Chapman has the versatility to play anywhere on the line and should be a great addition for the Chargers.

26. Detroit Lions- CB Janoris Jenkins, North Alabama-

The former Florida star, has absolutely dominated the Division II level. He is an elite playmaker every time he touches the ball, and displays good ball skills. He looks to be a real ball hawk going forward, and fits in perfectly for Detroit.

27. San Francisco 49ers- DE Billy Winn, Boise State-

The 49ers don’t have a major need at defensive end, but it is an area they could improve. Winn is shooting up draft boards and looks to be a prototypical 3-4 end. He will make that formidable 49ers defense even better. While the 49ers could look towards the offensive side of the ball it wouldn’t surprise me to see them continue to build up that defense.

28. Baltimore Ravens- OT Ricky Wagner, Wisconsin-

The Ravens biggest weakness this season has been their offensive line play. While some of that can be attributed to injuries, I think it is clear they need to upgrade the unit. Wagner is a LT who is rising, and if he declares should be in the first round mix. He’s more of a road grinder, but that fits the Ravens offensive philosophy. He would be a big upgrade to Baltimore and give them the protection they need on the left side.

29. New England Patriots (via New Orleans) CB Chase Minnifield, UVA-

The Patriots likely won’t keep both picks, but if they do they should look to add another defensive player. Minnifield is one of the top guys on the board here and gives them yet another good young defensive back. Minnifield’s father was an All-Pro corner back in the 80′s, and actually played his final two years under Belicheck with the Browns. Belicheck might take a shot on his son and see if he can be the same shut down corner his father was.

30. New England Patriots-DE Jared Crick, Nebraska-

The Patriots aren’t likely to keep both picks, but if they do they are likely to add a defensive player. Crick profiles best as a 5-tech DE, but he can help out in other formations as well. Crick was likely a top 15 pick, but a recent injury should knock him down to the end of the round. This is a good value pick for New England if they choose to make it.

31. Pittsburgh Steelers- ILB Luke Kuechly, Boston College-

Pittsburgh’s James Farrior still plays at an extremely high level, but he is likely winding down his career in the next year or so. Adding Kuechly, keeps the Steelers defense in tact, and will continue to make them a formidable force to stop any offense.

32. Green Bay Packers- OLB Courtney Upshaw, Alabama-

The Packers need to find a pass rush complement to Clay Matthews and Upshaw could be their man. Upshaw is a very versatile LB who could play in any system at just about any spot. He is a very good pass rusher though and could be a nice fit here for the Packers. He’s smart, instinctive and takes good angles at the quarterback. With all the attention placed on Matthews, Upshaw could have a field day for Green Bay.

2012 NFL Mock Draft: Picks 1-16 10/31

October 31, 2011 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

Round 1, Picks 17-32, Round 2, Round 3, Round 4, Draft Blog, NFL Draft Page

1. Miami DolphinsQB Andrew Luck, Stanford-

The Dolphins weren’t exactly on fire this season before Chad Henne went down, so now their season looks even more grim. The only positive is they get to land the ‘next great quarterback’ in Andrew Luck. Given their need and pursuit of a signal caller of late, this is the easiest selection they will ever make.

2. Indianapolis ColtsQB Landry Jones, Oklahoma-

Curtis Painter has been adequate (prior to the Saints game), but they are still losing games. The Colts need to highly consider drafting Manning’s replacement here, and I think if any of the top three guys are still on the board here, Indy goes with the QB. This is probably the best fit for Jones, as he gets to learn under Peyton Manning, and he goes to one of the few offenses that is pass heavy with a lot of shotgun and spread formations. Jones should me more comfortable in those sets, quickening the time it takes for him to become a viable starter.

3. Denver Broncos- WR Alshon Jeffery, South Carolina-

Brandon Lloyd is now a Ram, and Eddie Royal is likely to follow him out the door this offseason. While Denver has some other interesting young receivers, they could use a weapon like Jeffery for Tebow to grow with (hopefully). Jeffery is arguably the best receiver to come out since Calvin Johnson, and should be a major weapon for the Broncos.

4. St. Louis RamsOT Matt Kalil, USC-

Sam Bradford and the Rams are struggling this season, but it has little to do with Sam Bradford. The Rams receivers are dropping balls left and right, while the offensive line has allowed Bradford to be the most pressured quarterback in the league. He’s taking far too many hits this year, which is just not acceptable if the Rams are ever to become a serious contender. Kalil could lineup from day one at LT shifting Roger Saffold over to the right side and Jason Smith to the interior.

5. Seattle Seahawks- QB Matt Barkley, USC-

Pete Carroll wasn’t able to trade for his first QB at USC, Carson Palmer, this offseason, but that should allow him to draft his last, Matt Barkley. Carroll only had one year with Barkley, but he did recruit him so he knows his strengths and weaknesses. Barkley gives Seattle their QB of the future and if he develops a very bright future. I think he is more of a risk than some, but if anyone can get him to succeed it should be Carroll.

6. Jacksonville Jaguars- WR Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma St.-

The Jaguars receivers have been pathetic this year, and they desperately need to add some weapons for Blaine Gabbert, for him to have any chance of being successful. Blackmon is a huge target and looks to be a number one receiver going forward. I think he’s more advanced than Dez Bryant was at this point two years ago, and he’d be an excellent pick for Jacksonville.

7. Arizona Cardinals-OT Jonathan Martin, Stanford-

The Cardinals have a number of issues, but they need to make fixing their offensive line a priority, or Kevin Kolb will be doomed to fail. Kolb is among the most pressured and sacked quarterbacks in this league, and it gives their offense zero chance to succeed. Martin would be an instant upgrade for the Cards offensive line and a day one starter for them. He’s strong in both the run and passing games and gives them the first piece in rebuilding that line.

8. Minnesota Vikings-  OT Reilly Reiff, Iowa -

Now that the Vikings have gone to Christian Ponder they need to prioritize getting a new left tackle to protect him. While Minnesota is solid to good at 3/5 of their line spots they are down right bad at LT and RG. Finding a guy who can fix either one of those needs helps Ponder and Adrian Peterson be that much more effective going forward. Reiff isn’t as good as Kalil or Martin, but he’s worth this selection (they could also look to trade down), based on need. He might not be perfect as a rookie, but he has a good upside and will be a nice upgrade regardless.

9. Washington Redskins- QB Robert Griffin III, Baylor-

I’ve long resisted putting a quarterback at this spot for the Redskins, but if they have a shot at Robert Griffin, I think they might take it. While this might be slightly high for him, Griffin’s upside is ridiculous. He is an incredibly smart, cerebral quarterback, with incredible accuracy, and an extremely strong arm. On top of all of that, he is a track star (literally, and if he doesn’t come out this year he plans on trying out for the Olympic track team), and could be as dangerous as Michael Vick running the ball. Now trading back could also be an option as the Redskins have numerous needs, but if Griffin is on the board and he continues to trend upwards he’d be a nice pick here for Washington.

10. Cleveland Browns- OLB Zach Brown, UNC-

It is odd to draft a non-pass rushing OLB in the top 15, but not unprecedented. Brown is a guy who deserves to be drafted this high, and the Browns are a team with zero talent in their outside linebacking corps. This seems like a great fit and can help make the Browns defense become a force in the AFC North.

11. Carolina Panthers- DT Brandon Thompson, Clemson

The Panthers are a team on the rise, but they still have some major needs going forward. One of their biggest needs is getting more talent in the middle of that defensive line. Thompson is quickly separating himself among defensive tackles, and has shown the talent that makes him a potential top 10 pick. He would be a huge upgrade in the middle of the Panthers defense and make their pass rush that much more effective.

12.  Kansas City Chiefs- DE Quinton Coples, UNC-

The Chiefs could use a pass rusher, and Coples is an absolute steal at this spot. He is probably a top 5 player in this class, but given team’s needs or their preference for QB’s and WR’s he could fall. He’d be a huge addition for the Chiefs and could team up with Hali to give them a great pass rush. Coples gets a knock in the consistency department, but overall I think it is overblown.

13. Tennessee Titans-ILB Vontaze Burfict, Arizona State-

The Titans need to find a new middle linebacker. Barrett Rudd was signed this offseason and has been just a disaster for Tennessee. Burfict would be a huge upgrade and help improve a solid defense. Burfict has elite upside and could be the next Ray Lewis is he stays focused. He should be a tackling machine in this defense and give them that star to really bring them all together.

14. Chicago Bears- CB Morris Claiborne, LSU-

The Bears could (and probably should) go for an offensive lineman here, but they also have a serious need at cornerback as well. Right now Chicago has been torched by just about every quarterback they’ve faced this season, and that is a big problem when you have four games against the Packers and Lions every year. Claiborne is arguably as good as Patrick Peterson last year and he was a top 5 selection.

15. Cleveland Browns (via Atlanta)RB Trent Richardson, Alabama-

The Falcons are reeling right now, which isn’t good considering they have already given up their 1st and 4th rounders to the Browns. The Browns could go a number of ways here, but Richardson might be too good to pass up. The Browns look to be in the middle of a bad contract battle with Peyton Hillis, which means they are likely in the market for a running back. Richardson has established himself as the best of the bunch and a smart pick here for Cleveland.

16. Dallas Cowboys- CB Dre Kirkpatrick, Alabama

The Cowboys could use an upgrade and corner and get excellent value here with Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick is a big time player, and has the potential to be a shutdown corner. He should instantly upgrade the Cowboys secondary, and could be the best playmaker they have had since Deion Sanders.

2012 NFL Mock Draft: Round 2 10/24

October 24, 2011 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

Round 1, Picks 17-32, Round 2, Round 3, Draft Blog, NFL Draft Page

33. Miami Dolphins- CB Jayron Hosley, Virginia Tech

The Dolphins cornerbacks have constantly gotten beat this year. Hosley has first round talent and is a great fit here at the top of round 2.

34. Indianapolis Colts- DT Devon Still, Penn State

The Colts need to find some help in the middle, and Still looks to be the best DT available at this point. A big time defensive tackle will help make the Colts undersized LB’s relevant again.

35. Jacksonville Jaguars- OG Kelechi Osemele, Iowa State

They landed their big play receiver in round one, but they need to add more help to Gabbert in round two. Osemele is a top level guard and should help both Gabbert and MJD be more effective.

36. St. Louis Rams- CB Jonathan Banks, Mississippi State

The Rams could go in a number of directions, but adding a top corner is key. Banks is a great fit here, and has big time upside. He has excellent size and could develop into a shutdown corner.

38. Denver Broncos- DT Jerel Worthy, Michigan State

The Broncos need to get some size in the middle, as teams face zero threat in the interior vs the Broncos. Worthy can be streaky at times, but he has the potential to develop into a very good DT.

40. Philadelphia Eagles (via Arizona)- SS Ray Ray Armstrong, Miami

The Eagles could use an upgrade at strong safety, and Armstrong is a good value at this spot. He is a bit undisciplined, but his potential make him worth a 2nd round pick.

41. Carolina Panthers- OG Barrett Jones, Alabama

The Panthers need to strengthen that offensive line to keep their triple running threat going forward, and give Newton more time in the pocket. Jones is a great fit here, and has very good potential.

42. Cleveland Browns- QB Ryan Tannehill, Texas A&M

The Browns might not be sold on Colt McCoy long term, and if that is they case they’d be wise to add Tannehill. Tannehill has franchise quarterback potential, and could be the future in Cleveland.

43. Kansas City Chiefs- OT D.J. Fluker, Alabama

The Chiefs need to get better play from their RT spot, and Fluker would be a fantastic option here. He’s got fantastic upside, and is a great power blocker.

44. Washington Redskins- OT Levy Adcock, Oklahoma State

The Redskins need to add a ton of help along the offensive line, and Adcock would be a good start. While he has some LT potential, he could start off at RT for the Skins, and help ensure their investment in Robert Griffin.

45. Cincinnati Bengals- OLB Travis Lewis, Oklahoma

With Manny Lawson a free agent (and not a great fit for the defense) the Bengals could look to add a LB early. Lewis would be a good fit here and would keep that defense strong.

48. Tennessee Titans- DE Vinny Curry, Marshall

The Titans need to get a better pass rush, and that is where Curry comes in. He’s an active pass rusher, who excels at getting after the quarterback. He does need to get better in run support, but he’s a solid 2nd round pick.

49. Philadelphia Eagles-OLB Lavonte David, Nebraska

The Eagles need to keep strengthening their defense, and David would join with Te’o to revamp Philly’s linebacking corps.

50. New York Giants- SS Tony Dye, UCLA

The Giants need to build up their secondary, and could use a future replacement for Rolle.

51. New York Jets- WR Mohamed Sanu, Rutgers

The Jets need to add another big target for when Plaxico Burress hangs them up. Sanu is a nice fit here, as he looks to be a playmaker at the next level.

52. Buffalo Bills- DE Melvin Ingram, South Carolina

The Bills have done well this year, but they aren’t getting any sort of pass rush. Ingram is a versatile defender who can play in any system and rush from just about anywhere. He’s a great fit here, and should help out that defense.

53. Dallas Cowboys- C Ben Jones, Georgia

The Cowboys interior line has been pathetic this year. Jones would give them an immediate upgrade at center, and has future Pro Bowl potential.

55. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- DT Christian Tupou, USC

The Bucs need to get help in the interior, and Tupou is a guy who is rising right now.

56. Houston Texans- WR Dwight Jones, UNC

The Texans need a complement to Andre Johnson, and Jones is a great option here. He has big play potential as well, and should thrive playing opposite Johnson.

57. San Diego Chargers- TE Coby Flenner, Stanford

Antonio Gates is getting up there with age and injuries, and Flenner could be his replacement going forward.

60. Pittsburgh Steelers- OT Mike Adams, Ohio State

The Steelers need to upgrade their offensive line if they want to keep Big Ben healthy.

63. Baltimore Ravens- OG Kevin Zeitler, Wisconsin

Ben Grubbs is a free agent this season, and if he isn’t resigned they will need to replace him in the draft.

64. Green Bay Packers- WR Marvin McNutt, Iowa

The Packers could lose Donald Driver and Jordy Nelson this offseason making WR a fairly big priority.

2012 NFL Mock Draft: Picks 17-32 10/24

October 24, 2011 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

Round 1, Picks 17-32, Round 2, Round 3, Draft Blog, NFL Draft Page

17. Philadelphia Eagles- ILB Manti Te’o, Notre Dame.-

20. Buffalo Bills OT Reilly Reiff, Iowa-

Although, the Bills so far are doing a good job of keeping Ryan Fitzpatrick upright, they could use a true bookend tackle that they don’t have to worry about for the next decade. Reiff fits that bill, and should provide a boost to both Fred Jackson and the passing game. It might be a stretch for him to last this long, but he could fall to them.

21. Dallas Cowboys- OLB Donte Paige-Moss, UNC-

The Anthony Spencer experiment hasn’t worked out too well, and the Cowboys could use a top notch bookend to Ware. Paige-Moss could be that guy as he has excellent pass rushing skills, and is just scratching the surface of his talent. With Dallas getting that bookend, their defense could become very scary going forward. A defensive back could also be the pick here.

23. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- CB Stephen Gilmore, South Carolina-

Between Barber’s likely retirement and legal troubles for Talib, adding a 1st round corner sounds like a very wise decision for the Buccaneers. Gilmore is a physical corner, and very advanced for his age. He should be a year a year one starter for them.

29. New England Patriots (via New Orleans) OLB Bruce Irvin, WVU-

The Patriots likely won’t keep both picks, but if they do they should look to add an OLB pass rusher. It looks like they will run more of a hybrid defense, but Irvin could even play OLB in the 4-3 giving them some versatility. Irvin would give the Patriots the best natural stand-up pass rusher that they have had in years.

31. Baltimore Ravens- ILB Courtney Upshaw, Alabama-

With Ray Lewis getting up there in age, and R. McClain a free agent, the Ravens would be wise to address their ILB needs with this pick. Now they do have some other big name free agents to worry about, but if their defense isn’t right this team won’t win. This has to be their top priority, and Upshaw is a smart, active LB who can be the guy in Baltimore. Upshaw is also a very versatile LB who can rush the passer, and should allow the Ravens defense to get creative in the future. I could see him moving inside in this system and be a Chad Brown type of player.

32. Green Bay Packers- CB Chase Minnifield, UVA-

Charles Woodson is in the twilight of his illustrious career, and the Packers shouldn’t be left unprepared for when he is done. Minnifield continues a strong tradition of UVA corners and would be a nice addition to the Packers defense. His father was a Hall of Fame corner in this league in the 80′s, playing on the same defense as Clay Matthew’s Jr.’s father.

2012 NFL Mock Draft: Picks 1-16 10/24

October 24, 2011 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

Round 1, Picks 17-32, Round 2, Round 3, Draft Blog, NFL Draft Page

7. Minnesota Vikings- OT Jonathan Martin, Stanford-

This could be a rough year for the Vikings, but the good news is it should put them in prime position to draft a LT to protect their QB of the future in Ponder. Martin is an absolute stud LT and a great option here for Minnesota. Adding him will make Adrian Peterson’s job a whole lot easier and that is exactly what the Vikings need.

8. Arizona Cardinals-  ILB Vontaze Burfict, Arizona St. -

The Cards need to shore up their defense, and while they have a good basis they need another impact player, which is exactly what Burfict projects to be. He’s a local product, which always helps, who has made a name for himself as the next great inside linebacker. Burfict has the tools to become an All-Pro, and is a great pick here for the Cards.

12.  Washington Redskins- QB Robert Giffin III, Baylor-

I’ve long resisted putting a quarterback at this spot for the Redskins, but if they have a shot at Robert Griffin, I think they might take it. While this might be slightly high for him, Giffin’s upside is ridiculous.

13. Cincinnati Bengals CB Dre Kirkpatick, Alabama-

I’m not yet ready to put the Bengals in the playoff hunt despite their 4-2 record, but they are also no longer looking like a bottom 10 team either. Cincinnati has a need going forward for a shut down corner, and should be quite happy nabbing Kirkpatrick at this spot. They could look to add some help upfront on offense, but Kirkpatrick is the top corner on the board making him a good value pick.

16. Tennessee TitansWR Michael Floyd, Notre Dame-

The Titans need to find another viable starting receiver opposite Kenny Britt, and Floyd is a good value pick at this spot. He’s a nice big target with deceptive speed, and good hands. He gives Jake Locker another weapon to grow with, and Tennessee insurance in case Kenny Britt isn’t a long term fit (given either the injury issues or the trouble with the law).
