2012 QB Rankings: Updated 2/21

September 30, 2011 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

  1. Andrew Luck
  2. Robert Griffin
  3. Ryan Tannehill
  4. Brandon Weeden
  5. Kirk Cousins
  6. Nick Foles
  7. Brock Osweiler
  8. B.J. Coleman
  9. Ryan Lindley
  10. Chandler Harnish
  11. Russell Wilson
  12. Kellen Moore
While Andrew Luck is the top dog in this group, he is by no means the only quality quarterback prospect. Their is a pretty strong group of signal callers at the top of this draft. I think this group has more talent than last year’s class.

2012 NFL Mock Draft: 17-32 Updated 9/26

September 26, 2011 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

17. Washington Redskins- OT Reily Reiff, Iowa-

I know some people will say ‘what about a quarterback’, well the top ones are all gone, and no one else is worth a pick nearly this high. Other’s might question adding another tackle, but without a doubt the weakest part of the Redskins is their offensive line. Trent Williams has yet to live up to his top 5 pick status (and may need to kick over to RT), while Jamaal Brown looks like a shell of his former self. The Redskins need to shore up this unit, otherwise it won’t matter who their quarterback is. Another option could be ILB, with McIntosh a free agent and Fletcher on the downside of his career. Trading back is also an option, but Reiff should be on the Skins short list for this pick.

18. Detroit Lions- ILB Manti Te’o, Notre Dame.-

The Lions should go in one of three directions with this pick, OL, CB, or LB. While all three are smart moves, they seem to be focused on improving their defense with their top picks (and you really can’t blame them). Te’o would be a great addition to put at LB and he could either play in the middle or outside. He’s a big time hitter and should have plenty of operating room with those big tackles up front.

19. Buffalo Bills- OT Andrew Datko, FSU-

The Bills have to draft an offensive tackle if they want this years success to turn into a trend. They have a good young team they are building, but now they need to protect them. Datko should be able to start immediately and compares favorably to Castonzo from this past draft.

20. Chicago Bears- WR Michael Floyd, Notre Dame-

I would probably look to address my offensive line here, but it seems clear that the Bears are looking for a big play receiver, and I’m guessing that Roy Williams won’t be that answer. Floyd, I believe has number one ability, but is raw enough in some areas that makes him a late first rounder. He’s got good upside and should contribute early in his career.

21. Arizona Cardinals- OT Levy Adcock, Oklahoma St.-

The Cardinals appear to be a vastly improving, but they still have some major holes along their offensive line. If they want to do more than win a weakened NFC West, they will need to protect Kevin Kolb, and Ryan Williams. Now this pick could change if they lose Larry Fitzgerald, but right now it makes sense to grab an o-lineman.

22. New York Jets- OLB Brandon Jenkins, FSU-

Jets could miss the playoffs unless Mark Sanchez really steps up this season, and if that is the case I’d look at two main culprits (outside of Sanchez). The offensive line and their rush linebackers. While they could go after an offensive lineman, they have more depth and talent there than at OLB. Both Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas are good pass rushers, but neither is great, and both are starting to get up there in age. Adding a young pass rush specialist like Jenkins could be huge for the Jets and give them the sack artist to go along with the rest of that elite defense.

23. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- CB Stephen Gilmore, South Carolina-

Between Barber’s likely retirement and legal troubles for Talib, adding a 1st round corner sounds like a very wise decision for the Buccaneers. Gilmore is a physical corner, and very advanced for his age. He should be a year a year one starter for them.

24. Pittsburgh Steelers- ILB Luke Kuechly, Boston College-

Pittsburgh’s James Farrior still plays at an extremely high level, but he is likely winding down his career in the next year or so. Adding Kuechly, keeps the Steelers defense in tact, and will continue to make them a formidable force to stop any offense.

25. San Diego Chargers- DT Josh Chapman, Alabama-

The Chargers front three is suspect even after the addition of Corey Liguet. Chapman gives SD another big man, and one who is capable of helping out at NT, their weakest position. Chapman has the versatility to play anywhere on the line and should be a great addition for the Chargers.

26. Dallas Cowboys- OLB Donte Paige-Moss, UNC-

The Anthony Spencer experiment hasn’t worked out too well, and the Cowboys could use a top notch bookend to Ware. Paige-Moss could be that guy as he has excellent pass rushing skills, and is just scratching the surface of his talent.

27. Philadelphia Eagles- DT Jerel Worthy, Michigan St.-

What do you get for the team that has ‘everything’, well some depth. The Eagles could look at adding an OT here, but unless the position completely collapses this year, I’d say DT is their biggest need. You need to be able to rotate your DT’s in this league, and right now the Eagles don’t have a lot of depth here. Worthy would be a fine addition to get 25-30 snaps a game.

28. Houston Texans- DT Alameda Ta’amu, Washington-

I really like what the Texans have done this offseason and I think this new defense will take them pretty far. They will still need some help though going forward and I think their primary need will be at NT. Ta’amu is a fantastic run defender and profiles to be a starting NT in the NFL. He’d be a great pickup here late in round 1, and should start right away.

29. Green Bay Packers- CB Chase Minnifield, UVA-

Charles Woodson is in the twilight of his illustrious career, and the Packers shouldn’t be left unprepared for when he is done. Minnifield continues a strong tradition of UVA corners and would be a nice addition to the Packers defense. His father was a Hall of Fame corner in this league in the 80′s, playing on the same defense as Clay Matthew’s Jr.’s father.

30. New England Patriots-SS Ray Ray Armstrong, Miami-

The Brandon Meriweather era has come to end next offseason, and the Patriots would do well to replace him with a fellow Miami product. Armstrong has incredible potential, but is still rather raw which should allow him to slide to the end of the first round. New England’s defensive talent will allow Armstrong to learn for a year, before he will need to be really relied upon.

31. New England Patriots (via New Orleans)- OLB Bruce Irvin, West Virginia-

The Patriots likely won’t keep both picks, but if they do they should look to add an OLB pass rusher. It looks like they will run more of a hybrid defense, but Irvin could even play OLB in the 4-3 giving them some versatility.

32. Baltimore Ravens- ILB Courtney Upshaw, Alabama-

With Ray Lewis getting up there in age, and R. McClain a free agent, the Ravens would be wise to address their ILB needs with this pick. Now they do have some other big name free agents to worry about, but if their defense isn’t right this team won’t win. This has to be their top priority, and Upshaw is a smart, active LB who can be the guy in Baltimore.

2012 NFL Mock Draft: Picks 1-16 Updated 9/26

September 26, 2011 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

1. Kansas City Chiefs- QB Andrew Luck, Stanford-

It looks to be a long year in KC, and the only saving grace is they will get to draft Andrew Luck. Even with Cassel at the helm, this is a no brainer pick, though if they get offered the world they could change their tune. The injuries really took their toll on Kansas City this year, but at least they get a really good consolation prize.

2. Seattle Seahawks- QB Matt Barkley, USC-

Pete Carroll wasn’t able to trade for his first QB at USC, Carson Palmer, this offseason, but that should allow him to draft his last, Matt Barkley. Carroll only had one year with Barkley, but he did recruit him so he knows his strengths and weaknesses. Barkley gives Seattle their QB of the future and if he develops a very bright future. I think he is more of a risk than some, but if anyone can get him to succeed it should be Carroll.

3. Denver Broncos- WR Alshon Jeffery, South Carolina-

Brandon Lloyd is an impending free agent, and he might not look to stick around with the Broncos in the midst of a rebuilding effort. While Denver has some other interesting young receivers, they could use a weapon like Jeffery for Tebow to grow with (hopefully). Jeffery is arguably the best receiver to come out since Calvin Johnson, and should be a major weapon for the Broncos.

4. Carolina Panthers- WR Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma St.-

The Panthers will find out this season if they have the weapons in place to run their offense, but I’m guessing that they will come up just short. Given the amount of money they spent this offseason, I don’t see them being able to afford a top flight WR next year. Blackmon will give Newton a big play weapon and eliminate that excuse going forward.

5. Cincinnati Bengals- OT Matt Kalil, USC-

The Bengals could go with need here, but how can you pass up a premium tackle like Kalil. He could be their next Anthony Munoz, and while their tackles are good now they could either look to trade one, or move Andre Smith inside to guard. Regardless they would be fools to let Kalil slide down any further in this draft.

6. Miami Dolphins- QB Landry Jones, Oklahoma-

Miami missed out on Kyle Orton, but they should be able to add their quarterback at the top of this draft class. Jones is my 2nd favorite QB in this class, and I think a future franchise QB. He’s got great size, accuracy and arm strength and appears pretty ready for just a guy going into his Junior year.

7. Tennessee Titans- DE Quinton Coples, UNC-

The Titans could use a pass rusher, and Coples is an absolute steal at this spot. He is probably the 2nd best player in this class, but given team’s needs or their preference for QB’s and WR’s he could fall. He’d be a huge addition for the Titans and could team up with Morgan to give them a great pass rush.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars- CB Alonzo Dennard, Nebraska-

Jacksonville could go in a couple directions, but I think adding a top flight corner makes by far the most sense. Dennard has big time potential and could end up being a true shutdown guy. He is exactly what Jacksonville needs considering they play the Colts and Texans four times a year.

9. Minnesota Vikings- OT Jonathan Martin, Stanford-

This could be a rough year for the Vikings, but the good news is it should put them in prime position to draft a LT to protect their QB of the future in Ponder. Martin is an absolute stud LT and a great option here for Minnesota. Adding him will make Adrian Peterson’s job (assuming he resigns) a whole lot easier and that is exactly what the Vikings need.

10. Cleveland Browns- OLB Zach Brown, UNC-

It is odd to draft a non-pass rushing OLB in the top 15, but not unprecedented. Brown is a guy who deserves to be drafted this high, and the Browns are a team with zero talent in their linebacking corps. This seems like a great fit and can help make the Browns defense become a force in the AFC North.

11.  San Francisco 49ers- DE Jared Crick, Nebraska-

The 49ers don’t have a huge ‘need’ here at 3-4 DE, but Crick is an excellent value pick here, and having a guy to rotate in makes everyone else better. He’s a good player who is versatile enough to play end in 4 man sets as well.

12. Indianapolis Colts CB Dre Kirkpatick, Alabama-

I’m not yet ready to put the Colts in the top 5 or 10, as I think given time the overall offensive talent will start winning some games for them. While QB is a need there is no one worth taking in the top 15 after the top 3 guys. The Colts could go a number of directions here, but I say they go BPA, and take Kirkpatrick. He has shutdown corner ability, and with the Jags and Titans auditioning new QB’s and Houston going strong with Schuab improving your pass defense is a smart play.

13. New York Giants- ILB Vontaze Burfict, Arizona St. RB Trent Richardson, Alabama-

Giants almost always draft for talent over need, but with Jonathan Goff a free agent next year and their outside linebackers a question mark, Burfict could end up being both. Burfict is a highly capable LB, who can play at any spot in any system. I could see him going inside, with Greg Jones moving to WLB, or vice-versa. Either way if the Giants have a down year due to the injuries adding someone like Burfict would be huge for this team.

14. St. Louis Rams- RB Trent Richardson, Alabama-

Now is the time to give Sam Bradford a big play weapon, but it might end up being a back rather than a WR. Steven Jackson is getting more and more hurt each year, and his days as a feature back are nearing an end. Richardson would give them a good compliment for a year and then someone who can take over the every down duties.

15. Cleveland Browns (via Atlanta)- WR Jeff Fuller, Texas A&M-

Atlanta is one Michael Vick injury away from being 0-3, and they still need to play the Saints twice, as well as the Packers, Texans, Buccaneers and Lions. The Browns could go a number of ways here, but Fuller offers them good value at this spot and right now I still don’t fully trust that WR corps.

16. Oakland Raiders- CB Morris Claiborne, LSU-

The Raiders could go a number of different areas, but right now their biggest question mark is CB. Given their penchant for loving big time athletes and top notch corner’s Claiborne makes sense for them.

2012 NFL Mock Draft: 9/16

September 15, 2011 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

Picks 1-16/17-32

1. Cincinnati Bengals- QB Andrew Luck, Stanford-

It looks to be a long year in Cincinnati, and the only saving grace is they will get to draft Andrew Luck (assuming he doesn’t decide to go back for his 5th year just to avoid them). Even with drafting Dalton in round 2 this past year, this is a no brainer pick, one that even the Bengals can’t screw up (I’m assuming if they mess this up the city of Cincinnati revolts). Hopefully the Bengals can get their act together and build a quality team around Luck, and treat him better than their last Franchise QB.

Blackmon will give Newton a big play weapon and eliminate that excuse going forward.

5. San Francisco 49ers- CB Dre Kirkpatrick, Alabama-

It could be a rough year in San Fran, if Alex Smith doesn’t prove to be adequate. While they could look at a big name QB (and will if they have the top spot), or an offensive lineman, their biggest need could be at corner back. Kirkpatrick is an exceptional playmaker and looks to be a surefire top 5 pick. He could step in from day one and be a shutdown guy.

6. Miami Dolphins- QB Landry Jones, Oklahoma-

Miami missed out on Kyle Orton, but they should be able to add their quarterback at the top of this draft class. Jones is my 2nd favorite QB in this class, and I think a future franchise QB. 12. Buffalo Bills-  OT Matt Kalil, USC-

Given the law of averages the Bills have to take an offensive lineman sometime right? I really like what the Bills are building, but not having a competent offensive line is going to be their downfall. Kalil is a day one LT, and really should be a top 5 type of prospect, but will get pushed down by the QB’s and WR’s. This would be a huge get for the Bills, and could begin to make them one of the more dangerous sleeper teams.

13. New York Giants- ILB Vontaze Burfict, Arizona St. RB Trent Richardson, Alabama-

Giants almost always draft for talent over need, but with Jonathan Goff a free agent next year and their outside linebackers a question mark, Burfict could end up being both. Richardson would give them a good compliment for a year and then someone who can take over the every down duties.

15. Indianapolis Colts- WR Jeff Fuller, Texas A&M- DT Brandon Thompson, Clemson-

People will ask, why not a quarterback here, and the answer is simple. It would be too much of an overdraft. I could see them looking for the Manning successor in rounds 2 or 3, but not if they miss out on the top names. I’m not fully behind taking a receiver here, but they are poised to have a lot of turnover at the position. Fuller gives them another weapon and will grow with a young quarterback as well.

16. Oakland Raiders- CB Morris Claiborne, LSU-

The Raiders could go a number of different areas, but right now their biggest question mark is CB. Given their penchant for loving big time athletes and top notch corner’s Claiborne makes sense for them.

2012 NFL Draft: 17-32 9/16

19. Cleveland Browns (via Atlanta)- OT Andrew Datko, FSU-

Joe Thomas is one of the best offensive tackles in the game, unfortunately opposite him the Browns have continuously had journeymen starting. With an improved offensive unit, the Browns need to get aggressive in building up their line. Datko would be a great addition to the line and give the Browns two great bookend tackles.

20. Chicago Bears- WR Michael Floyd, Notre Dame-

I would probably look to address my offensive line here, but it seems clear that the Bears are looking for a big play receiver, and I’m guessing that Roy Williams won’t be that answer.
