NFL Draft Day 3: Best Players Available- Defense

April 30, 2011 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

Defensive End:

  • Sam Acho, Texas
  • Pernell McPhee, Miss. State
  • Greg Romeus, Pitt
  • Brandon Bair, Oregon
  • Ricky Elmore, Arizona
  • Cliff Matthews, S. Carolina
  • Pierre Allen, Nebraska
  • Ugo Chinasa, Oklahoma State
  • Markus White, FSU

Analysis:

The position has thinned out some, but there are still a few quality defensive ends available and probably will be through the 5th round. After this it gets pretty dicey but there are a few guys with upside.

Defensive Tackles:

  • Christian Ballard, Iowa
  • Jerrell Powe, Miss.
  • Lawrence Guy, Arizona State
  • Ian Williams, ND
  • Martin Parker, Richmond
  • Cedric Thornton, S. Arkansas
  • David Carter, UCLA
  • Chris Neild, WVU

Analysis:

The tackle position is pretty picked over as well but my guess is value will hold through the 6th round. Nose tackles are pretty rare at this point but there are a couple with good value.

Linebackers:

  • Chris Carter, Fresno State (OLB)
  • K.J. Wright, Miss. State (OLB)
  • Greg Jones, Michigan State (ILB)
  • Quan Sturdivant, UNC (ILB)
  • Colin McCarthy, Miami (OLB/ILB)
  • Lawrence Wilson, Conn. (OLB)
  • Mark Herzlich, BC (ILB)
  • Casey Matthews, Oregon (ILB)
  • Ross Homan, Ohio State (ILB)
  • Doug Hogue, Syracuse (OLB)
  • Adrian Moten, Maryland (OLB)
  • Scott Lutrus, Conn. (OLB)
  • Cheta Ozougwu, Rice (OLB)

Analysis:

A few of the top backers are gone, but I think there is a lot of good day 3 value here. I’m sure most of these names will go in the top 2 rounds today, but they should all be good value picks. All these guys should at least be good special teamers and some will have a nice impact in year one.

Safeties:

  • Tyler Sash, Iowa
  • Jeron Johnson, Boise State
  • Shilo Keo, Idaho
  • Quinton Carter, Oklahoma
  • DeAndre McDaniel, Clemson
  • Joseph Lefeged, Rutgers
  • Eric Hagg, Nebraska
  • Robert Sands, WVU
  • Ahmad Black, Florida

Analysis:

I actually really like the depth of this class, and I think there are a lot of quality safeties still on the board. Most of these guys will need at least a year to be a starter, but I love the potential. Look for some good late round finds from this group.

Cornerback:

  • Davon House, New Mexico State
  • Brandon Burton, Utah
  • Buster Skrine, Chattanooga
  • Richard Sherman, Stanford
  • Brandyn Thompson, Boise State
  • Josh Thomas, Buffalo
  • Kendrick Bruney, UNC
  • Justin Rogers, Richmond
  • Chimdi Chekwa, Ohio State
  • Jalil Brown, Colorado
  • Chris Rucker, Mich. State
  • Chykie Brown, Texas
  • Cortez Allen, Citadel
  • Devon Torrence, Ohio State

Analysis:

Extremely deep position, with a number of quality nickel and dime corners still on the board. I think good value can be found well into the 7th round and we will see a number of teams get some late round gems.

Day 3 of the NFL Draft: Top Players Available Offense

April 30, 2011 in Uncategorized by Steve Shoup

Here is a by position breakdown of some of the top guys available as Day 3 of the NFL Draft is set to begin:

QUARTERBACK:

  • Ricky Stanzi, Iowa
  • Nathan Enderle, Idaho
  • Pat Devlin, Delaware
  • Greg McElroy, Alabama
  • Tyrod Taylor, Virginia Tech
  • T.J. Yates, UNC
  • Mike Coughlin, Boise State
  • Ryan Colburn, Fresno State

Analysis:

There isn’t much left in the tank when it comes to quarterbacks. I think Stanzi is still a capable guy and should likely go in the next 30-40 picks. Other than that I think most of these guys are late 6th rounders to 7th round guys. A few guys with upside, but all real projects.

RUNNING BACK:

  • Kendall Hunter, Oklahoma State
  • Roy Helu Jr., Nebraska
  • Jordan Todman, Connecticut
  • Jacquizz Rodgers, Oregon State
  • Derrick Locke, Kentucky
  • Dion Lewis, Pitt
  • Taiwan Jones, Eastern Washington
  • Delonte Carter, Syracuse
  • Bilal Powell, Louisville
  • Da’Rel Scott, Maryland
  • Anthony Allen, Georgia Tech
  • Evan Royster, Penn State
  • Allen Bradford, USC

Analysis:

There is a lot of quality depth still on the board here. While there might not be any future franchise backs, there are a lot of change of pace and specialty backs on the board. I think you will find good value among the next 60+ picks.

FULLBACKS:

  • Owen Marecic, Stanford
  • Anthony Sherman, Connecticut
  • Charles Clay, Tulsa
  • Henry Hynoski, Pitt
  • Shaun Chapas, Georgia
  • Stanley Havili, USC

Analysis:

The entire fullback class is still available and there are some good values as we head into late round 4 early round 5. They could likely fall even further given how undervalued the position is but it is probably a mistake. I think there are a couple of real gems here that teams will be quite happy with drafting.

WIDE RECEIVER:

  • Greg Salas, Hawaii
  • Niles Paul, Nebraska
  • Edmond Gates, Abilene Christian
  • Jeremy Kerley, TCU
  • Tandon Doss, Indiana
  • Terrence Toliver, LSU
  • Denarius Moore, Tennesse
  • Ronald Johnson, USC
  • Cecil Shorts III, Mount Union
  • Stephen Burton, West Texas A&M
  • Dane Sanzenbacher, Ohio State
  • Darvin Adams, Auburn
  • Ricardo Lockette

Analysis:

While all the top guys are gone, there is still a ton of value at this position. In addition to the guys I listed easily another 10 players could be drafted in the 7th round. Teams can find a lot of raw prospects who could develop down the road, and they can find solid 3rd and 4th options still on the board.

TIGHT END:

  • Virgil Green, Nevada
  • Luke Stocker, Tennesse
  • Jordan Cameron, USC
  • Lee Smith, Marshall
  • D.J. Williams, Arkansas
  • Julius Thomas, Portland State
  • Schuylar Oordt, Northern Iowa
  • Mike McNeil, Nebraska

Analysis:

There is still a good amount of talent on the board here for tight ends. There isn’t any real complete day one starters on the board, but a lot of good number 2 pass catching types. A few of these guys have some serious upside and could develop into starters down the road. A lot of good value picks will be had in the next 2 and a half rounds.

OFFENSIVE TACKLES:

  • James Brewer, Indiana
  • Jason Pinkston, Pittsburgh
  • Chris Hairston, Clemson
  • Byron Stingily, Louisville
  • Lee Ziemba, Auburn
  • Derek Newton, Arkansas State
  • Willie Smith, ECU
  • Jarriel King, South Carolina

Analysis:

The tackle spot has been pretty well picked over but there should be a couple of nice pickups in rounds 4 and 5. Most of these guys also have the versatility to kick in to guard so that should help them out as well. It really thins out after these guys, so teams that need a tackle need to address it soon.

INTERIOR OFFENSIVE LINEMEN:

  • Clint Boling, Georgia (G)
  • Zach Hurd, Connecticut (G)
  • DeMarcus Love, Arkansas (G)
  • Tim Barnes, Missouri (C)
  • Brandon Fusco, Slippery Rock (C)
  • David Arkin, Missouri State (G)
  • Steve Schilling, Michigan (G)
  • Jake Kirkpatrick, TCU (C)
  • Jason Kelce, Cincinnati (C)
  • Alex Linnenkohl, Oregon State (C)
  • Justin Boren, Ohio State (C/G)
  • Ray Dominguez, Arkansas (G)
  • Daniel Kilgore, Appalachian State (G)

Analysis:

While there isn’t much left on the board for guards or centers, there are some decent values. Most of these guys won’t be able to start early on, but I think they can all contribute. A few of them have the upside to develop into quality starters.
