Lancers Basketball: Mid-season Report

4:51 pm in Uncategorized by Parks Smith

With nearly twenty games in the books for 2011-12 edition of the Lancers the team currently stands at 7-12. Truthfully, the team should be 10-9 at this point but Coach Mike Gillian’s squad let some games slip away late against Navy, Canisius, and Hampton. Both the Navy and Canisius games were home matchups for the Lancers, but transition defense was the Achilles heal down the stretch.   Another tough loss came at Nevada where the Lancers nearly hit a last second shot to knock off the Wolfpack, who are now 17-3 and knocking on the door of another trip to the NCAA tournament.

Beyond the tough losses the Lancers have had some solid wins this year, including recent road wins against Dartmouth and Farleigh Dickinson.  But their best win came in mid-December when the Lancers knocked off future Big South rival VMI 110-89. The Lancers absolutely dominated the game from start to finish and showed that they can make an impact once they enter the Big South in the very near future.

Individually, the Lancers have once again been lead by 6’6 senior Antwan Carter. Carter is currently averaging 18 points and 9 rebounds per game. To put Antwan’s career in perspective, he has accumulated 33 double-doubles in his time as a Lancer. Beyond Carter, two other seniors have been integral for LU; Jeremiah Bowman has been averaging 14 points per game and 6 assist, also Martiz Washington has been averaging over 10 points per game. The most pleasing newcomer for the Lancers has to be LaSalle transfer and sophomore T.T. Carey who has averaged nearly 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists.

Twelve games are left in the Lancers season, who currently in the midst of a five game road trip. The home slate in Farmville includes two intriguing matchups remaining. First, a game against fellow Independent Seattle, and then a game against Great West member North Dakota. On the road the Lancers will have some challenges, they head to Norfolk State on February 20 and then end the season on a west coast swing where they get a rematch against Seattle and play perennial NCAA power and Top 30 team, Gonzaga.

Longwood has won three out of their last four games, and if they keep that positive momentum going then there is a good chance the Lancers could in the year with a winning record.
