The Eagles have said that McNabb is available for a draft pick in the top 42 selections in this year’s draft. While much of the speculation has revolved around the fact that the majority of the teams that need quarterbacks have their 2nd round selections before the 42nd pick (Bills, Raiders, Rams ect.), 42 is a very interesting number to pick.

If it was just an arbritrary number to pick why not 40 or 45 or 50? If it was an effort to include all the quarterback needy teams 2nd round picks, why leave off teams with obvious needs like Denver (45th) or Carolina and San Francisco (48 and 49).?

To me this leaves one conclusion and that is that the Eagles have 42 players listed with first round grades on their draft board. That is pretty significant and goes to show just how deep this draft class is. In many years there will be between 28-35 players with 1st round grades, though the number will vary by team. And some years the number is even smaller than that. Usually we don’t hear the number of players with first round grades until after the draft when teams try to justify certain trades and picks.

I think this trade insight has given us an early look at the depth of the draft board. And while some teams will have fewer first round grades and some will have more I would guess the average number falls into that 40-45 range.

wow, nice catch. I never even considered that. Hopefully the Skins will hold on to their second rounder.

That is interesting…I hope we hold onto our 2nd rounder too and just get more picks in general by trading players or trading back!
