This will probably rub people the wrong way, but I’m tired of professional athletes being deemed the most classy, respectful gracious people in the world (ie Lebron James) for doing things that benefit themselves.
I posted this on the Wizards’ ESPN message board about Caron Butler’s good bye letter after half the board deemed him a selfless humanitarian:
God…people eat this stuff up.
Isn’t it possible that Butler was motivated to do this out of his own self-interest? Of course there is an assumption being made that this came from him and this was his idea. I strongly doubt that it was…but anyway, before butler was traded he was spouting off quotes on his blog such as:
“Every time I was dealt [previously], I had better years with my new team than I had with my old one.”
He was obviously insinuating that he is pretty optimistic about leaving DC…
Maybe someone told Butler that he was saying stupid things that were hurting his public image in the DC area, and his address to the Wizards fan base was his way of rectifying that…
So many people fail to understand that famous people — and especially athletes — present themselves differently when on camera or in front of a huge audience than they would in their own homes. Accepting everything they say and do as genuine and heart-felt is just ridiculous. It’s like claiming Kobe Bryant is some humanitarian because he poses with a shovel in his hands while surrounded by little kids for NBA Cares commercials. And for that matter, for future reference, when athletes arbitrarily do community service, not only does it bolster their public image, but they also get a hefty tax break…
The reason I’m bringing it up again is because the posters on the Wizards boards are biased homers that can’t synthesize anything the “news” hands them.
