Over the last few seasons, there have been very few trades for players, especially in-season trades. This year has been a different story and this week saw another trade.
In this week’s biggest move, the Dolphins traded with the Baltimore Ravens for their disgruntled, 34-year old left tackle. In return, the Ravens will receive a conditional late round draft pick.
Drafted by the Minnesota Vikings with the seventh overall pick in 2002, his career has been up-and-down with off-the-field incidents as the downs and a Pro Bowl and Super Bowl ring as the ups.
Off-the-field, McKinnie has been involved in a few controversies which include the Vikings’ Love Boat Scandal in 2005, being arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest without violence outside a Miami nightclub in 2008, and an incident this year where teammate Jacoby Jones was allegedly hit on the head with a bottle by a stripper named Sweat Pea during a birthday party for McKinnie. He also showed up to Vikings’ training camp after the NFL lockout in 2011 at over 400 pounds.
On the plus side, McKinnie had a streak of 80 consecutive starts for the Vikings and made the 2009 Pro Bowl. Naturally though, things didn’t go smoothly there as McKinnie didn’t play due to injuries but wasn’t straightforward with the league about this and had to forfeit his game check and pay back other expenses.
Simulate the 2016 Draft with Trades!
On the play that injured Brett Favre in 2010 and caused his streak of 297 consecutive starts to end, McKinnie was the one who gave up the sack.
After showing up well overweight to the Vikings’ training camp, they released him and was soon signed by the Ravens. In 2011, he started all 16 games, but in 2012, he started no regular season games as he was in head coach John Harbaugh’s doghouse over a lack of effort and weight issues.
For the playoffs, the Ravens shuffled their offensive line around, inserting McKinnie into the lineup. This change helped spark the offense and kept quarterback Joe Flacco clean while he had a record-setting postseason which ended in a Super Bowl victory.
In the offseason, McKinnie was a free agent and re-signed with the Ravens after being on the open market for awhile.
This season, he struggled in every game, causing the Ravens to trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars for Eugene Monroe. This move left McKinnie without a spot on the line, leading to speculation that he would be traded.
The Dolphins have had trouble with their offensive line all season, especially from their tackles. With this move, left tackle Jonathan Martin will be moved to the right side with McKinnie going to his normal spot on the blind-side. Current right tackle Tyson Clabo is expected to be either cut or traded in the ensuing weeks.
Miami was a logical location for McKinnie as he went to college there so he will be happy there and the Dolphins needed some help on the line. The Dolphins get a veteran starter (who has another year left on his contract after this season) and the Ravens get a draft pick (probably a seventh round pick that can turn into a sixth) for a player their no longer needed. Both teams walk away from this trade feeling happy.
